W., , 7,,, ., , Football: Finally Mature For the last three years the St. Agnes football team was said to be young, inexperienced-but never out-hit out-hustled or out-fought, or so said various coaches and yearbook editors. For the last few years promising B-Squads were pro- duced and were looked on to resurrect the var- sity's record. But nothing happened, not until 'l97'l. The young, unexperienced etc, etc, grew up to be real-live seniors and actually WON football games and didn't just dream about them. Three years of B-Squad and varsity future potential was realized in an 8-1 record. lt was their year, the year of the exer-genies, the chutes and the golly-gosh brand new thou- sand dollar uniforms. It was the year that they could do no wrong, it was the year that they were rated in the state poll, it was the year they beat St. Cloud. lt was their year from beginning to end. CONCORDIA September 3, was a warm and humid night, and St. Agnes made things hot for Concordia gaining 423 offensive yards. Steve Belde and Mark Misukanis scored four touch- downs and ran for 244 yeards collectively, while the defense limited Concordia to minus three yards on the ground. LOYOLA Stronger opposition was expected in Loyola and the reports proved true with Loyola taking a 8-6 halftime lead. But QB Steve Fuerst engineered a third quarter drive capped by his own 5 yard TD. Sub. QB john Hamburger put the game out of reach with a 53 yd. scoring strike to Terry Novaczyk. BRECK The Aggies opened up with 10 quick points from the john Hamburger led offense with a 3 yd. Belde run but bogged down in the second quarter leading 'I6-6 at halftime. But as in the Mankato game Steve Fuerst stormed the gates with 2TD passes to Pat McCarthy and an ll yd. run by Misukanis. ST. CLOUD CATHEDRAL Always lurking like a mugger in an alley St. Cloud is the irresistable force, year in and year out. But this year the im- movable object was the St. Agnes defense. The only scoring in the game came in the second quarter when Darrell Kasal forced a St. Cloud fumble on their three-yard line and Dave Wan- less recovered it and sprinted to the one. From there Steve Belde had no problem backing over for the score. The second half was a stand off and the end result was a 6-0 first time victory over Cathedral. Genesis: ln the beginning.
