Sparrows cease melodic play and seek comfort in lofty homes, it's raining. Small yellow rain-coated bodies skip along puddled sidewalks, it's raining. Droplets ping into puddles to form their own pools, it's raining. Sunlight slumbers and people bow to winds it's raining. Dreamy thinkers gaze through foggy panes, it's raining. AFTERNOON Craggy tiled roofs flecked with sunshine bake under the hot Peruvian Ra. Bronze berried children Shriek in a courtyard a chant of ioy. Women wrapped in bright stripes, clothed like one ultimate zesty blanket. The men-and their wine-dusky bottles and swarthy cheeks-sweaty, workhard bodies lean back to close their eyes once more. Barbie Hall '74 perhaps it is the quietness that makes you so immeasurable or the hisses of sunlight skipping through your hair or gleaming in your blue soup eyes. or maybe the love of heaven or green earth-trembling daisy bright or child prayer. -or perhaps the sharing of eye rain all in you and me for both perhaps it is the quietness of these that make you so very immeasurable. perhaps it is only quietness then, that can watch quietness with knowing eyes. you are so immeasurable what a very loud loss to be blind. A PSYCHOANALYTIC MALFUNCTION Vfwas a problem. Of all the numbers in his set he was the only non-repeating, non-terminating decimal. Although Vfcould function similar to other numbers in associating, commuting, and distributing, he was unable to form a line and be graphed, and thus was reiected as irrational. Vfwas then at an angle of depression. He was going through a phase common to all numbers of seeking his true value and relating to the identity element.VT grew iealous of the other numbers. He envied l who was an essential factor in every number's life. He wished he could be like 7 who was a real prime in his time. Yet all Vis delusions of property left him feeling decreased and with an empty set. It wasn't a long interval before V75 jealousy grew into bitterness. At this point, Vfrefused to associate with his former number friends. He classified 4 as a perfect square. He denounced x:y as straight and totally out of his range. VE-could no longer identify with the real numbers. He multiplied with V:l and spaced out to an imaginary plane. V?-got into a groove with an undefined slope and constantly went off on a tangent. Vis mother, VZ recognized him as a degenerating radical and arranged for VT to have a one to one correspondence with the 7Tchiatrist. After a careful evalu- ation, Dr. 7l' diagnosed an acute conic illness. V5-definitely had a complex system of values, symbolic of a malfunc- tioning element. Dr.7i' had seen a similar condition in a l with a multiplicative identity. Yet there was a limit to Vfs increasing malfunction and a cure was within bounds. Thus Dr. Tl' concluded that V7-had not lost all relation to the real numbers. Through a binary operation and a process known as inflection, Dr.7T helped Vfderive the root of his problem. Vfwas suffering from an acute exponent envy complex. This critical evaluation was the turning point for Vi-rearranged his variables and acquired new dimensions to his existence. Rather than being a VZ he changed his symbol to 2'f1. Now 2V1 was a new number. He felt well-defined and less irrational, and in summation, was once again a positive element of his set. PART 2 Close up, perspiration beads out of his brown pores His rich, earthy skin is mellow like a piece of dusky satin Eyes closed, dark lashes Cheeks rubberized and smooth But yet the piece of brass between his lips is the only thing that really counts Barbie Hall '74 When I said hey you kind of slowly turned your head and half-smiled and half-talked to the thrown-up arms that were in my eyes and to the restrained hair that wasn't. and we paused and looked at the blue leans that america-ed by and we knew it was time' to put down our ice-creams and cigarettes if only for a little while.
