Helen Stevens '72 A PSYCHOANALYTIC MALFUNCTION Vfwas a problem. Of all the numbers in his set he was the only non-repeating, non-terminating decimal. Although Vfcould function similar to other numbers in associating, commuting, and distributing, he was unable to form a line and be graphed, and thus was reiected as irrational. Vfwas then at an angle of depression. He was going through a phase common to all numbers of seeking his true value and relating to the identity element.VT grew iealous of the other numbers. He envied l who was an essential factor in every number's life. He wished he could be like 7 who was a real prime in his time. Yet all Vis delusions of property left him feeling decreased and with an empty set. It wasn't a long interval before V75 jealousy grew into bitterness. At this point, Vfrefused to associate with his former number friends. He classified 4 as a perfect square. He denounced x:y as straight and totally out of his range. VE-could no longer identify with the real numbers. He multiplied with V:l and spaced out to an imaginary plane. V?-got into a groove with an undefined slope and constantly went off on a tangent. Vis mother, VZ recognized him as a degenerating radical and arranged for VT to have a one to one correspondence with the 7Tchiatrist. After a careful evalu- ation, Dr. 7l' diagnosed an acute conic illness. V5-definitely had a complex system of values, symbolic of a malfunc- tioning element. Dr.7i' had seen a similar condition in a l with a multiplicative identity. Yet there was a limit to Vfs increasing malfunction and a cure was within bounds. Thus Dr. Tl' concluded that V7-had not lost all relation to the real numbers. Through a binary operation and a process known as inflection, Dr.7T helped Vfderive the root of his problem. Vfwas suffering from an acute exponent envy complex. This critical evaluation was the turning point for Vi-rearranged his variables and acquired new dimensions to his existence. Rather than being a VZ he changed his symbol to 2'f1. Now 2V1 was a new number. He felt well-defined and less irrational, and in summation, was once again a positive element of his set. Jacquelyn Connelly '7l PART l Jazz man His music throbs on Yet I am only lost in his notes He does not matter, far-away his Soul only moves. Rachelle Annunxiato '7I Today was iust like any other day-the wind sliced the green grasses as smoothly as its counterpart, the sickle. I drank my morning tea lhot and bittersweetl and felt the strong sun break- ing the barriers of man-made glass. As I sat at my table of plenty, pen and paper set before me, I was trying to think of what to say, or rather how to write my thoughts. Lately, lin my life at leastl shadows seemed darker and hours lonlier and longer and more isolated. Darkness is forever enclosing me like a midnight painted box encloses all deadened entity. How futile it appeared to be . . . I felt an emptiness inside my attic walls--a closeness of obiects always known, yet frequently forgotten ltaken for grantedl as they were always there for me to behold. But now, now it was different. A mystery loomed in the dark cellars of my mind. When nature's puppets are obscure, a mid-morning coldness crept inside my world, touching not only me, but those things that I considered my friends. My bed, crusted with age, the funny, scarred door leading outside and my candles, cracked from lack of use, all turned shades of pallor and rust. Something in my environment was making a vast difference in my outlook, slowly becoming bleak and inward. I can remember when, as a child, I would sit in my mother's room, braiding my fiery-gold hair, so long and thick. Innocence, dolls, make-believe fantasies occupied the spare moments in my mind then. Country rides with momma on Sunday afternoon always were something to look forward to. We'd run through those daisy-studded meadows, laughing, picking every field-flower in sight. How I miss momma, who always smelled like our Sunday afternoons. And, oh, how I miss seeing those flowers, all that green, all those colors-how I miss seeing . . . I wonder if the sky is as bright and mellowed blue as I last saw it? Could things be so changed that I couldn't even recognize them by their smell or texture? People must be changed-no one bothers to take me on a Sunday outing-no one probably knows I'm here . . . Today is the last of the stagnent hours spent alone inside this dungeon. I, too, am growing pale-almost vegetable-like. Maybe in the new light, I will be able to see a new world, one like that of my childhood, where I will notice God's handiwork, and where he can show me mine. Maybe, Ievenl he will teach me how to see with my mind, my hands, my lips, then I won't miss the dark absence of my eyes so much. Kathye Keck '71 55 THE TRAVELER I hang alone in solitude, Suspended from a barren tree, Her branches shake from fear of what I know will overpower me. Thus, my enemy approaches, Cruelly snatching me from my home, Foretelling the storm's arrival, And I set oft, the world to roam. l'm tossed gracefully through the a Settling only now and then. Passing over the rocky path, A stream I see and stop again. Floating round the rippling water Like a small boat without a sail, I play hide-and-seek with shadows, As they quickly pursue my trail. The rugged sides are vast canyons, And though the rocks get in my way, Under one, I seek a haven, A sheltered, peaceful place to stay. Catherine Nowaski '74 Sometimes when the sun comes out it blinds me with its glare i can't see at all. or clouds can block the light and black or gray blankets all i still can't see. maybe someday on a nice day i'll be able to sit warm in the sun and still see the shadows. Anne Zicari '71 ir, . . It used to be that time and goodness had something to do with the sun- now the orange fire only casts light for leaping, QVUY realities of shadows. Kathy Keck '71 Wind blustering around me and I put my head to my knees searching for the warmth of my soul. And finding it, l threw up my head, smiling, defiant to the wind. Their main ob- iectives have been to emphasize the need to care, to smile, and to communicate with each other. Impact has sponsored special days to promote understanding of each other, and to make all more aware of each other by bringing them closer together. IIZII Z Club is an organization for people who care. Those who want to give their time and concern are given the opportunity to help those who need it most. Girls volunteer their time at many places in the city-the AI Sigl Center, Baden Street Settlement, Monroe County Home, Strong Memorial Hospital, St. John's Nursing Home, and the C.Y.O. Individual corps have car washes and a play presented at the Mon- roe County Home. The officers attended a dinner for International Z Club mem- bers. Volunteers work hard at giving. 131 7r ff 'Q i v Linda Schirmer, Treasurer B ' Glu!- On your mark! Get set! Go! Tick! Tick! Tick! Ring! Ring! Ring! Stop! The Business Club is off and running to reach their 1971 goals. Since September, they've been typing, copying, and helping our teachers get tests and dittos ready for the day. This year was the first year that the club has had pins. The girls are very proud of these pins since they represent all the hard work that was volunteered. St. Agnes is very lucky to have a Business Club of such competency. Tutu-ce The Home Economics Club exists primarily so that St. Agnes girls may learn the arts of homemak- ing. The members sponsored a baked food sale for the student body and put the profits in the club's treasury. ln December, they prepared a delicious meal for Sister Helen and Father Cushing. This club has brought happi- ness-and good food-to every one at St. Agnes. 1 X . PM The Joint language Club, the re- cent merger of the French, Span- ish and Latin Clubs, has combined to bring a greater span of dis- covery. Activities range from Latin Week with proiects involving the gods or model Roman houses, with a celebration complete with Roman hostesses, reminding all that Latin lives, to a Spanish Fiesta. This consists primarily of a dinner with constant attempts at following Spanish culture. Anoth- er experience is discovering how Christmas is celebrated in France. The meetings provide informa- tion on the customs and cultures of the ditiferent peoples. There has been discussion of holidays in the various countries, speakers such as our exchange student from Brazil, Mary Carmen San- chez, one of our language teach- ers, Mrs. Zilioux who is from Germany, and also a general sharing of knowledge about the diFferent peoples of the world. 133 ,S ' F 0' ' The Library Club is made up of students from every class who volunteer their free time to help W Sisters Mary Stephen and Marie Vincent keep the library running smoothly. Increasing numbers of girls have been 'seen roaring down the slopes at Bristol. The G. A. Kathryn Gaspar '71 Ski The St. Agnes Ski Club com- pleted its fourth year with a new record - no casualties. Each Friday night for eight weeks, 75 girls took to the slopes of Bristol Mountain. It is said if you can survive the bus ride, Rocket Run holds no threat. Hot chili, heavy boots, frozen hands and toes, ski- school lessons and broken poles will remain in the memories of every Ski Club graduate. Whether you lose a contact lens halfway down the slope or triumphantly per- fect your parallel, it never fails to be a truly remarkable experience. But a dark cloud passed over that era when the school was forced to repossess the Palm room, and turn it into another uniform, mundane class- room. ln the face of this dilemma, the editors found themselves in another room, small and window- less, with a constant temperature of 89 degrees. lt came as a sur- prise to the staff that they would be sharing it with an assortment of classes, from German l, to Ad- vanced Calculus. But fate struck again when the two sides of the room found it difficult to work in harmony. Enter Press Room :H:3, a four by four vacant bed- room below the convent. With no time left to completely move, the editors were forced to work out of two rooms, separated by numerous halls, the cafeteria, and an underground tunnel. Alas, these were difficult times, but surely the editors did rise out of the despairingly dreary depths of discord, to the brilliant ecstacy of achievement. 136 Linda Smith and ' Susan Dziengielewski, Photography Co-Editors Mm -N S K ,. An unknown benefactor sends her to an elite all-girl col- lege, where she meets Jervis Pen- dleton, a dashing young million- aire. Judy reports all her activities in letters to her benefactor, which she signs with Love from Judy. Under the guidance of Sr. Virginia Hogan, the young voices learn to produce a variety of tones from deep and dark to the highest delicate soprano note. The first song looks unconquer- able, but by patient practice of each part, the finished product tits together in harmonious agree- ment. At the Christmas concert the Freshman Chorus makes its first public appearance, finishing up the year at the Spring Concert. 4leeClu6 What's that sound? lt's loud then soft . . . soft then loud. If you listen very carefully you will rec- ognize the voices of the St. Agnes Glee Club practicing warm up exercises and learning new songs under the direction of Sr. Virginia Hogan. Many hours are spent in a week for these girls who prac- tice over and over again, blend- ing their voices together to produce some special songs. Through all the practicing, the result comes in the form of sev- eral performances-the Christmas and Spring concerts here, and participation in those at Mercy and Rush-Henrietta. The Glee Club also prepares and presents a musical each fall - this year bringing Love From Judy to the St. Agnes stage. ln May, the Glee Club brings their talent to a test at the New York State Aiudication, a difficult competi- tion that iudges a group on every dynamic and note of a song. Through all of these activities comes a strong unity which is formed by the sharing of pleasure and work.. . and it is most visible when you see them under the stage lights, working together, singing together - and smiling together. 139 Sr. Anne Virginia Nancy Domiano Jill Helfrich DcamaCCu6 The auditorium is deathly quiet. The clock clicks in the solemn stillness. Suddenly the doors fly open and girls stumble down the dark aisles, laughing at their own clumsiness. Soon lights are turned on and everyone is now seated and listening to their moderator, Sr. Virginia Hogan, who is telling the members of the Drama Club about auditions for the Christmas Play, The Gift of Tenyin. The Drama Club is always busy plan- ning activities. Their spring play Bright Girl under the direction of Mr. Andia was a big success. If you believe in stars and if you believe in trying, then maybe Drama Club is something for you to believe in-it has its own kind of stars. 6 t T T wk A Michele Sural Sr. Alice McLaughlin Marilee Dummer, Laurie Brongo 140 is N flax 5 X Xia EQ. up , J '71, sfifg' F? 6 yf. .Z 4 K , ff.. flu 4. Formerly sensible, law-abiding members of the student body succumbed to screaming, shriek- ing and general carrying on at that assembly known affectionately to all of us as the The Zoo, formally the official beginning of the drive. For the next week or so, guerilla warfare tactics enter all phases of St. Agnes life. The class to knock over the most innocent bystanders in the race to put up posters considers itself victorious in that category. The class that can be heard all over the school land some iuniors claim to have made their cheers vibrate clearly through Gene- see Valley Parkl also receives grudg- ing admiration. But these are only second best to the magazine selling tactics employed by our young ladies. No door is left un-knocked upon, no potential custo- mer is left unaccosted by our eager saleswomen. The payoff comes at the closing assembly, known to be un- believable, when one class lthis year the Mickey Mouse Seniorsl receives first prize and a week's supply of laryngitis. The whole school, -for their efforts, receives the state wide first prize. Mascots and dwarfs vow to solve Pinocchio's prob- was g lem. The real solution comes with top salesmen like Sue Bruckel and Sue Foos. Snowwhite, Michele Szembrot, co-chairman lsecond from rightly Pinocchio, linda Butz, Business Chair- man, Iead the dwarfs and mascots in a chorus line and in the Magazine Drive spirit. Co-chairman Pat Dynski as Jiminey Cricket gives Mr. Hull, Readers' Digest representative, the all important results to announce. pedal Every Day 6, the last 4 mods of the day, St. Agnes students have a break from the routine of classes by means ot the assembly period. Various cultur- al and educational acts are brought to the stage of our auditorium. This year, the student body was an enthusiastic audience for Arthur Mil- ler's Death of a Salesman, pre- sented by the National Theatre Com- pany. Representatives of the Democratic and Republican parties presented their platforms before the local elec- tions. An open assembly sponsored by the Student Council brought in Yoga experts l3l, a ski instructor lll, iudo student, charm consultants, with each student attending the subject that most interested her. Miss Louise Hickey performed The Barretts of Wimpole Street, delight- ing the student body again with her limitless variety of expressions and characters. Sr. Mary Anne l6l from Brazil and Sr. Marie Albert l5l from the Selma mission presented slides and an explanation of what the missions are accomplishing. A representative of the Committee of Responsibility l4l made the stu- dents of St. Agnes aware of the plight of young war victims and the students responded by donating over S900 to COR. Dr. Michael LaCombe l2l pre- pared a questionnaire on drugs and their use among St. Agnes students and presented the results to the par- ents as well as the students. Even mini-guests l7l were on the agenda for the Child Development class. 145 CLASS OF 1972 Andrews, Kathleen Attridge, Joanne .... Augsbury, Deborah Bader, Elizabeth ,,..
