Did that frail sprout seem lifeless, Drooping its leafy head, Its infant arms hanging helpless As a hush on a requiem bed? Ah, no! Time tells the story. It was not destined to die, For this sturdy, cradled sapling Raised its noble head on high. May each fertile springtime clothe it With souls of virtue bold: May its grads go forth like monarchs To fell life's trials e'er old. Its sapling arms are now waving On its motherly loving breast, Sighing a sigh of sad farewell And a prayer for our lasting success. Qlass fffis to ry HE Year of 1933 was a very important one to the fourteen girls and boys who were about to begin their high school careers. At last they were freshmen. The ma- jority of the class had been graduated from the eighth grade at Saint Agnes the preceding Juneg Virginia Baum, Lois Parker, John Bauer, and George Reed were from other schools. It was a bit difficult at first to adapt themselves to the ways of high school and to become familiar with algebra and foreign languages, but under the patient instruction of the Sisters they were able to maintain a high standard. The following September saw some of the same people in their places-a little older and perhaps a little wiser. That year Louis Lindberg, Harry Gabriel, John Bauer, George Reed, and Martin Schibler transferred to Senior High School, but the class was joined by Eleanor Schneider, Juanita Cochrun, and Claude Batey. Still another year and all had been promoted to the junior class, which had now diminished to six. Saint Agnes at this time only offered a three-year course, and many had gone elsewhere to complete their last two years. Maxine Veinhage went to Greenwood, and Ed Duggan enrolled with the Christian Brothers in St. Louis. Harry Ga- briel returned and Joe Bel was a newcomer. These few tried to make up for their lack of numbers by applying themselves diligently so as to be pre- pared for the final and most important year. September 1936 we felt important as the future first graduates of the new Saint Agnes High School, which had at last been realized through the efforts of Father Hally, our beloved pastor. Under the capable supervision of Father Hally, Father McNamara, and the Sisters, we delved deeper into our books to attain higher honors in this our last year. Maxine Vienhage, Ed Duggan, and Louis Lindberg came backg Rose- mary Hruska and Joe Newton also joined us. We thoroughly enjoyed our Get Acquainted Party and the social sponsored by the Blessed Virgin Sodality. After slaving for months on candy sales, the girls finally succeeded in obtain- ing enough money to buy sweat suits for the boys' basketball team. Their greatest triumph, however, was the card party, the proceeds of which were sufficient to convert the attic into a sorority room for the girls. All talk now is of the Year Book, which is to be Saint Agnes' first. We have been unusually busy the last few months having pictures made, securing patrons, and gathering data for the Annual. The two outstanding social activities of the year are yet to come-the Senior-Junior Prom which is to be held on May 18 at the Colonial Hotel, and the school picnic. Then last, but by no means least, comes the day toward which we have been striving for four years. On Sunday, May 30, when we receive our diplomas, the last chapter in our high school history will be completed. -LOIS PARKER. Glass QOH!! WE, the ambitious Class of 1937 of St. Agnes High School, situated in Springfield in the State of Missouri, being of sound body and or as sane mind as possible after much laboring for four years, do this fifteenth day of May make this last Testament willing to those students who are to come after us the fol- lowing scholastic possessions. FIRST ITEM: To the Faculty we bequeath our appreciation of their time spent to equip us with sufficient knowledge to help us to meet and to overcome the difficulties of our future life. SECOND ITEM: To the school we leave our- selves, the Alumni, the first of St. Agnes. THIRD ITEM: To the Class of '38 we be- queath the memories of our days as seniors with the hope that they will enjoy them as much as we have. Maxine Vienhage leaves her gay dancing spirit to Harriet Rettig. Joe Bel bequeaths his height to Joe Smith. Rosemary Hruska imparts her wide use of speech to Mary Imelda Brown. Joe Newton shares his knack for teasing with Bill Ginison. Lois Parker bequeaths her hair and blonde fairness to Dorothy Chambers. Louis Lindberg wills his good nature and pleasant disposition to Bud Dobyns. Mary Frances Pollak transfers her terrifying driving speed to Clara O'Rielly. Edward Duggan leaves his ability as an artist and his witty nonsense to Joe Murney. Harry Gabriel bestows his convincing voice as salesman to Ben Hennessy. With my Alma Mater I share the memories of my many happy days spent here. The Faculty we appoint as our executors. In accordance with the ancient custom, and in testi- mony whereof, we do affix our seal. Signed this fifteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and thirty-seven. THE SENIOR CLASS By: Marie Wissbaum, '37. glass Qrophecy New York, New York May 14, 1947 Dear Monsignor Hally: How very proud I am today that I was one of the ten seniors who composed the first graduating class of Saint Agnes High School a decade ago. Who would have visioned on the street where the white frame building stood, the largest Catholic educational institution in Springfield 7 I am now a traveling reporter for the women's section of the Times magazine here in New York. VVhile on a survey, from which I just returned, I met the other nine 1937 graduates. I am sure you will be interested to know what lines of work each took up: therefore, I shall hurriedly give you a short account of my knowledge of them. Harry Gabriel and Louis Lindberg successfully completed their trans-continental flight in an incredible record-breaking time. These two always appeared to have high ambitions, and no doubt they thought the sky was the place to put their desires to work. In a recent letter from Marie Wissbaum she men- tions that she has accepted the position to head the English department in the Hardin College in Texas. With Marie at the helm, the students of Hardin College should capture many first prizes in the writing contests throughout the country. Monsignor, imagine my surprise when I saw Lois Parker graduated with high honors last week from the Missouri Law School! I remember how Lois wanted to talk and argue everything out to the point where all con- cerned we1'e satisfied. She has been offered a splendid position in a large law firm in Chicago where I am sure she will succeed. Lois wanted me to stay a few days with her so that we might see Joe Bel play basket-ball in the National tournament of amateur teams. No doubt you know that he is captain of the Kansas City Trailers. It seems strange that two of the '37 graduates have found their life work together. Joe Newton heads the staff at the Washington Hospital in Washington, D. C., where Maxine Vienhage is supervisor of nurses. Neither Maxine nor Joe let the rest of us know that they had enough sympathy for the sick to be in charge of those helping the unfortunate. Mary Frances Pollak is teaching dancing in a very popular school in Hollywood. She accompanied me as far as Denver while she was on a tour for talent last month. She informed me that Ezl Duggan has been coaching a football team in Chicago for several years, but in the near future he expects to be identified with Notre Dame. I think that about finishes my gossip about the grads of '37, Do you think it could possibly be arranged for us all to meet again '? What fun we should have discussing those good old days at St. Agnes! Please write soon and tell me more about your beautiful new school. Pollak Treasurer-Ben Hennessy Hortense Nation The sodalists enthusiastically responded to the request that they make the triduuni in preparation for the feast of the Immaculate Conception as a Christmas offering for the Holy Father. On December Sth the new members were formally received into the sodality by Father Hally, who first delivered an inspiring sermon on The Child of Mary. The two outstanding temporal activities sponsored by the sodality were the drive for subscriptions to The Queen's Work during Catholic Press Month and the observance of Vocation Week, March 6-13. Father Hally succeeded in obtaining several of Springfields prominent citizens to ad- dress the student body on various vocations. Doctor James E. Dewey, physician, spoke on the practice of medicine Mr. Eugene Johnson explained the advant-ages and disadvantages of engineering and architecture. The profession of law was made enticing by the talk of Mr, John Miller, Miss Margaret Crighton discussed library science as an interesting life work. The week was closed by Reverend Michael Ahern who revealed the many beauties of the religious life. The members of the sodality are looking forward to the event that will spell finis to the activities for this year. On Mothers Day, the entire sodality, numbering more than one hundred, will take part in the annual May Crowning. Marie Wissbaum has been given the honor of crowning the Queen of May in recognition of her twelve years' attendance at St. Agnes School. Uhr Qlathnlir Hniuvraitg nf Amvrira Manhingtnn, JB. G. FOOTBALL HE first football team of Saint Agnes played a schedule which was arranged by Father Hally, the Director of Athletics, with the pick of the teams in the Little Eight Conference. The football coach, Howard E. Bader, was a well-known athlete in Springfield. A football and track star at Springfield High and captain of the Greenwood football team in his senior year. Coach Bader attended Missouri University and played football there. He retu1'ned to Springfield as a member of the faculty and the football coach at Saint Agnes High School. Any success enjoyed by the team is due largely to Mr. Bader's untiring efforts, his patience. and his good judg- ment in the building of his team from limited material and inexperienced men. 'Ihe boys who answered the first call for football players when Saint Agnes opened last fall were of all sizes and weights. and few of them had ever played the game before. Preparing this group cf players for a football season in only a few weeks proved the ability of the coach and the spirit of the boys. The team won the first game against the Bullpups of Springfield High in a close contest. The follow- ing week the team traveled to Miller. In that game the Saint Agnes Irish earned the name of fighters . After this upset, at a special meeting, Bill Gimson was elected captain for 1936. On a muddy, slippery field the Irish next played Lock- wood and were defeated. In the fourth game which was with Golden City, Saint Agnes dropped another decision. The Fighting Irish finished the season with a tie game against Walnut Grove. RECORD . , , . Vienhage St. Agnes 7 . . . . Springfield 6 . w H- Gabriel st. Agnes 0 . . .... Gene Ricketts. forward, was unanimously chosen to lead St. Agnes Cagers next year. Talks were given by Coach Carter. Father Hally. and the '37 captain and center. Joe Bel. 1.?T' SOPHOMORE SOCIAL The sophomore class entertained the seniors with a lovely social on Sunday evening, April 18th. The class colors of blue and gold were carried out in the decorations and in the refreshments. The placecards. candy suckers dressed as graduates in caps and gowns, added to the attractiveness of the table. Various games and dancing were the entertainment for the evening. FRESHMAN SKATING PARTY The senior class were the guests of the freshmen at a skating party held at Doling Park, the evening of May Srd. The little frosh exhibited the same cooperative spirit in this affair that they have shown in all the school activities of the year. From the time the cars drove off at seven o'clock filled with fun-seeking girls and boys, until they returned at midnight, not a dull moment was known by any one. fibrary Girls and boys find bcoks for all purposes on the shelves of the beok stlcks that line the walls of the new Saint Agnes library. One sees not only the finest editions cf the Mast-ers but modern school books, up-to-date fiction and the late magazines. The collection, which when Complete will meet the requirements of a first class high school libraiy, is classified and cata- logued according to the Dewey Decimal System. A debt of gratitude is due Miss Harriet Horine, Superintendent of Springfield Public Library, and to Mrs. Ivan R. Branson, who graciously gave hours of their time to this seemingly end- less task. In an old, high-ceilinged room. where light streams through modern Venetian blinds and reflects back again to a carved cherry iireplace. Saint Agnes pupils as- semble for study, Carved gold doorknobs, two fireplaces, one of cherry and one of oak, and wainscoating of Japanese rock tile seem pleasantly incongruous alongside school desks, pencil sharpeners. and ink wells.
