S T A G C A G E R S SPARKED TO FIR T PLACE St. Agnes' cagers for the first time in the school history displayed their power by taking first place in the Manhattan division of the C.H.S.A.A. The Stags opened their season with convincing victories over such formidable foes as Manhattan, St. Raymond's, Tolentine and St. Mary. The Stags went into the M.I.T. with a 9-I record only losing to Sacred Heart by 1 point. In the M.I.T. the Stags went on to beat Cathedral and Rosell. In the final game for the championship of class B the Stags were upset by St. Mary of Manhasset which cost the Stags the championship. After the defeat the Stags went on to play Mount St. Michael, the Class A Champs of the M.I.T. Although the Stags went into the game as a 20 point underdog, through teamwork and team spirit they came out the victors. During the second half of the season, the Stags went on to beat Iona, Tolentine and St. Raymond. With losses only to Sacred Heart and Rice the Stags won their division with a 10-3 league record. In the playoffs for the best of Manhattan, the Stags lost to St. Helenats five and thus were eliminated from the competition. The teams' overall success was greatly due to the fine coaching of Mr. Lamagna. Under his excellent direction the team gradually improved after each encounter.
