AGNES You can talk of great schools of the nation, Schools high in respect and renown, But there's none that can cause the sensation, As where St. Agnes, boys are found. Theylre the pride of this fine generation, Young men, strong in both spirit and mind. In this era of moral deflation, Their equal you never will find. Competition? They canlt be defeated, There's groans of despair at their name, From honour, they refuse to be cheated. O, all of New York knows their fame. If there's work to be done, they are ready, There's nothing on earth they won't try: They're industrious, honest, and steady And rather than give up, they'd die. They're as proud as the bold Alexander, As valiant as Hector of Troy, Firm in purpose as Cato the Elder, And daring as tricky Rob Roy. If you need one to do the fantastic, And that with the utmost of poise, There's no reason for anything drastic, just call on the Sl. Agnes boyr. DANIEL P. STOKES St. Agnes High School DEDICATIO This year we dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Mauro Lamagna, who has de- voted himself unseliishly to the betterment of St. Agnes. Mr. Lamagna has conducted his heavy schedule as Guidance Counselor and Varsity basketball coach with amazing aptitude. At all times he has been willing to lend a hand, make suggestions, or clear up a student's difficulty. Mr. Lamagna entered St. Agnes when the present senior class arrived for their first taste of high school life, and it is the same class that is dedicating their yearbook to him. Ever since his arrival, Mr. Lamagna has helped to instill in us a desire for learning and righteousness. It is our hope that this dedication will express our sincerest gratitude for all we have received from his hands. Mr. Lamagna: Basketball coach I As guidance counselor he does a lot of oliice work. Mr. Lamagna as a bowler The students just about worship Mr. Lamagna. Sv-'H OUR PASTOR For the last thirteen years, Monsignor Dineen has taken a profound interest in the spiritual well-being of each student attending St. Agnes. Our director has inserted a great influence on the student body and has been a guiding light to all. His affectionate talks and warm letters manifest his deep concern in our destiny. He has made the sacraments available to us at all times and has always been ready to aid us. Monsignor also enjoys participating with the student body in their activities. He has restocked our laboratories with the latest scientific apparatus and has filled our library with an enviable supply of books. For all the kindness and concern the Monsignor has shown us, we wish to express our deepest affection. O R PRINCIPAL Brother James has done a remarkable job in his first year as Principal of St. Agnes. The class of '64 will ever be indebted to him for the patience and understanding he has shown to all throughout the school year. He has often gone to extremities to counsel and guide us in our individual problems. He has worked tirelessly for improvement, and has incorporated changes which, indeed, have revolutionized the school. So, Brother james, it is with the deepest sense of appreciation that we thank you for all you have done to make our stay at St. Agnes more rewarding. Mr. Ronald Culcagni Bro. It is evident that a great deal of work has been put into this book in order to make it enjoyable. The staff hoped to catch the memories that the students might have acquired during their year of studies. Every effort was made to top all previous yearbooks and to give some new ideas to the yearbooks that will come after this one. The Stags opened their season with convincing victories over such formidable foes as Manhattan, St. Raymond's, Tolentine and St. Mary. The Stags went into the M.I.T. with a 9-I record only losing to Sacred Heart by 1 point. In the M.I.T. the Stags went on to beat Cathedral and Rosell. In the final game for the championship of class B the Stags were upset by St. Mary of Manhasset which cost the Stags the championship. After the defeat the Stags went on to play Mount St. Michael, the Class A Champs of the M.I.T. Although the Stags went into the game as a 20 point underdog, through teamwork and team spirit they came out the victors. During the second half of the season, the Stags went on to beat Iona, Tolentine and St. Raymond. With losses only to Sacred Heart and Rice the Stags won their division with a 10-3 league record. In the playoffs for the best of Manhattan, the Stags lost to St. Helenats five and thus were eliminated from the competition. The teams' overall success was greatly due to the fine coaching of Mr. Lamagna. Under his excellent direction the team gradually improved after each encounter. THE VARSITY. First Row: Alston, T. Kneeling: Harry Berezonsky. But I used two balls! The Varsity keglers of Saint Agnes had a rather slow start at the beginning of the year, but rallied strongly to take third place in the C.H.S.A.A. division. Brother james Eliott, mod- erator of the bowling, made a few changes which greatly improved the team and made them a strong contender in the first division. After the replacement was made, the team was off to a new start in the second half of the season. Brother james' rearrangement greatly aided the team and resulted in a change of the teamls standing from seventh to third place. JAY VEB Bowu G 20 M F 5+ First Row: W. Siska, Kolb, M. Fay. In a minute. Quiet at last. Drumming up recruits. I RETROSPECT Without a doubt, the past year was an eventful one, making its mark on the face of history. The year had its great moments and difficult times. Like any- thing, it had its light and serious side, and in every case, it affected the lives of Agnesians in some way. The Worlds Fair came to New York in April, making it the first one here since 1939 . . . Pope Paul VI made his historical visit to the Holy Land . . . New advances were made in science . . . In sports, the Yankees dropped four in a row to the Dodgers,fYogi Berra became the most popular Yankee manager in baseball history and the U.S. took a beating in the Winter Olympics . . . Throughout the year, the cold war continued, sometimes a slight thaw, then a frigid hardening. Americans gave their lives in the cause of freedom as fight- ing continued in Viet Nam . . . In November tragedy struck when an assassin's bullet took our thirty-fifth president, john F. Kennedy and suddenly we were in a new period of history. Lyndon B. johnson became the new president . . . Famous writer, Aldous Huxley was taken by the Grim Reaper . . . In movies, Cinerama went in full bloom and the Cardinal was big all around . . . Jack Benny celebrated his thirty-ninth birthday . . . Soundtracks were big sellers in music. Another sound that was big was that of those boys from Britain, the Beatles. We thought it over and found the Mersey sound to be the old Ameri- can sound. Elvis Presley added more gold records to his giant collection . . . Agnesians read more paperbacks, saw more movies and bought more records than usual . . . More in the local vein, the Varsity and Jay Vee basketball teams finished first and second. Bowling was also tops . . . Agnesians displayed more school spirit than ever before . . . The school library was officially opened . . . The Stag took on a new look . . . A new neighborhood sprouted up around our school . . . We studied hard for exams and passed them . . . We certainly canit forget our new principal, Brother W. james Kearney who got the show on the road, and also the members of the faculty, editors joseph Colacicco and Nicholas Chiovetta of the Agnesian and Stag, the student councilmen and the entire student body all did their share and earned their vacation. Well, what kind of year has it been? It's been a year you and I have had a little more experience, a little more joy and perhaps some heartbreak. But all in all, it was worth it. We have progressed another step in maturity and now the year is over. Some time in the future look back at this yearbook and this page particularly, and remember all that happened, and then you will also remember that you were-undeniably a very real part of it . . . These were times to remember. The editor wishes to thank all who made this yearbook possible. 95 fK 145521535 K f.,. ,.. - u v N .K Km.: -1 3 '-Q: .V 5 4 AMW ...M fx i - h m....,,, .
