FOR your guidance and excellent example through the years, FUR struggling to give us a good Catholic education by sending us to St. Agnes, FOR watching over us with such loving care and tenderness, FUR your priceless contributions to the foundation and formation of our character, FOR providing such a good home for us where we could feel safe and secure, FOR forgetting the times we were disobedient and inconsiderate and ungrateful to you, FOR understanding us in those impossible times, FOR seldom grumbling about our various needs, for it seems we are always asking for some- ' thing, FUR being so eternally there for us to lean on, FOR the sound advice Cwe wish now we had al- ways heededlg For being so much like Mary and Joseph in our eyes, May God bless and keep you always. And may we live up to all your hopes and dreams for us, all the while making you proud that we're your daughter. s 4 Q E :SAA .E 1 Lk 1 , . . .,. ..w:f ' iv . x r rm um: - f ,--xmmgh-wp E Q ii rx 5 fig , E Q X9 :I E x' 32 New 5 3' , R016 N9 ii ' A ' W . 8 dw mmhz s gn X 3 xnxx Q.. TO OUR CAMPUS Dear Campus, where our feet so oft did stray, And we with heart and mind from worry free Did talk and laugh like children who at play Let merry voices ring in lively glee. Sweet memories thou dost hold, O, may there be A solace and comfort to us when Our barks are tossed on life's tempestuous sea. When bitter cares and griefs press upon us than We'll fondly turn our thoughts to thy dear scenes A WINTER TREE How ugly is a winter tree Bereft of all its verdant gown A bare and wrinkled mass of wood All knotted in a frown. How winter's constant icy blast Can transform beauty's grace A lofty supple lady Now stiff with ragged lace. Martha Armes, '55 X again. And there once more in memory we will roam. The familiar haunts of other days, And saunter mid thy leafy shades alone. Or vie in friendly conflict to win praise. Or else we'll turn our reverent inward Upon that lovely masterpiece of art So beautiful that hundreds stop to raise Their gratitude to God and then depart Oh, we shall ever keep thy memory in gaze Cora Farley, '55 our heart. li' 35 Nivftxf 3 hif, 1 ,Q xx Q as W7 xrs - gf ,Qin vw: A 5 x MK F: 5 Q kk A ' S xx? , x ' msg is A K ,J xr? . 2 l K ft' 34 3 1 XX . lBl0R , IH G CEREMO Y edrfx 'iw also - w fir ., 5, .i ' 1 Q Q fzwuiiy ' 5 4 W 1- ,rg 1-xpx..f'x,.X fx,-X,-X ? 1. 9599? xx. I'd put in fancy words the way I feel about your walls, And how I love to spend the day Just roaming through your halls. I'd say exactly how I love To climb up your blue stairs, And slip into the chapel door To whisper all my prayers. . I'd write of all the friendly girls That feel the same way too, And of the nuns who teach us all The proper things to do. And when I've written all these things You're sure to know it's true, That all these words iust mean one thing St. Agnes, I love you. Rosalie Filippone Class of '56 S: s A8,Vik ' 'A R . We .f 1? Each time I pass the chapel by I think of You so very near- Who from Your place way up high Will bless my freshman year. My hours are filled with pleasure- No time to shed a tear, There is no rule to measure My happy freshman year. I thank Thee, Lord, for my freshman year, With all its ioys and sorrows- For all its memories I hold so dear- In Your hands I leave the tomorrows. Mary Beth Heyl, '58 THERE WA A LITTLE Fl H There was a little fish The fishie's name was Sal Sally was a dish A very pretty gal. One day she went a-fishin' A-fishin' at the lake And she was iust a-wishin' The honor roll she'd make. Three tests she'd have on Monday If she could only 'think But every time she closed the book Her mind went on the blink. I wish I were a real fish The kind that runs in schools I have an awful time Remembering all these rules. With Algebra and English And all these other books It isn't any wonder l'm always on the hooks. But she sat down and studied Till it was late at 'night And when the tests came 'round She knew she'd done all right. ln this story The Frosh is Sal She could be you Or your best pal. AA--.. f'-lI-.. FRESHMAN YEAR Dear Diary: Gee, I'm in high school now. Please meet St. Agnes, Diary, because I have a feeling you'll be hearing quite a lot of her from now on. Initiation Days ------ Diary, you wouldn't know me with all these pigtails and ribbons I'm wearing. The seniors really lay it on. My 'big Sister' sure is nice, though. You'd like her. By the way, just call me 'fishf Everyone else does. Class Days ------ Diary, ou will find the Freshmen in Homerooms 4, 5, 6, and 11. Our teachers are so much fun and wonderful to us. Sister Mary Iames keeps everybody on the watch with her Nifties. Sister Beatrice is so helpful during those Latin classes. Sister Evelyn made our science class complete when she took us on a field trip to radio station KTH T. Diary, do you know where X is? Sister james Marie told us to find it, but I don't know where to look. And I met Shakespeare in English today. Miss McCullough introduced us. T he quality of mercy. . f' Do I sound like Portia to you? Going once, going twice, sold to the girl in the red sweater! These phrases were heard repeat- edly during the day, as the Latin I class help their slave auction. And our beloved Principal, Sister Loyola, sure makes a lowly little 'fish' feel important when she stops to talk to you.. Evaluation Day ------ Oh, my aching back. Diary, I don't know who got the most paint, me or my desk. Singing commercials were heard over the P. A. about shoeshines, pickle sales, etc. Itls a real madhouse. You see we're getting St. Agnes ready for her big date with the evaluators, who come around every 4 years at this time. Class Favorites ------ 4 Oh, how excited we were to hear the returns of our big election. Mary Mead got most rep- resentative, Nancy Branch, most popular, and T hamer Sacco, most beautiful. Holidays ------ At S. A. A. we do up everything in a beautiful spirit at Christmas. Our candle fest was gor- geous. Fannin traffic just stopped to look at the effective live crib scene on the front porch and the Christmas carols sounded beautiful in the twilight. ' SOPHOMORE YEAR Dear Diary: Are you with me? Well, here come our sophomore days! First Day ------ Dig those crazy, mixed up freshmen, Dairy! Were we ever that confused? The sophs invaded Rooms 8, 12, Chemistry, and Biology Labs. Our teachers are: Sister Stephana, who sure can tell a book by its cover! fpardon the pun, Diaryj Sister Evelyn, who was promoted to the 10th grade along with her fish',, Sister Timothy, a promoter of school spirit as her famous Biology Labers will testify as they lead all competition. And Diary, you know Miss Elder? I'll never forget her' English classes! We pull many stunts in harmless fun, believe me, the dunce seat out in the hall is always occupied by some ever-playful soph. Remember the day we buckled everybody's belts together and dropped a sign, saying Hello, Biolo y Labers! from our second story window? Wonder how our Operation Greeting affected them as it floated out of the sky? s. s. B. nay ------ h Confused, Diary? Well, so was everyone else until the sophomores appeared wearing their Daddy's shirts topped off with a big green bow on Sophomore Shirt and Bow day. . Skit Day ------ B At last we got to act! Gym suits a M Paree! Our style show proved that even those bloomers could have that 'Dior' look. Sophomore Hop ------ And a gay time was had by all. . . Apple Day ------ Good little students that we always are, everybody brought Miss Elder an apple! Laughingly, she remarked, I bet you are hoping 'an apple a day keeps the teacher away', but no such luck! Eskimo Day ------ Today we journeyed to Alaska, Diary. In dreams, that is. Miss Elder shared with us her re- membrances of teaching days there. Real cool, we hear. How-To-Do-I t Day ------ Added to the wrinkles in my cerebellum are a few facts every soph should know. A recipe for avacado salad, the art of make-up, and how to sell Chili Tarts were among the interesting experi- ments which took place on Miss Elder's desk. Mice Day ------ Mice in St. Agnes? Heavens, no, Diary! ft's only we sophs nibbling at Miss Elder's treasured piece of birthday cake. -But to make amends, the guilty ones each produced a mouth-watering cake, and in turn, our friendly teacher invited all of us to join the tea party. Election Day ------ Reigning over the sophomore class as most beautiful is Mary Frances Gore, most representative, Camille Tamborello, and as most popular, Katie McDonald. Z Retreat followed Exams, and Father Diefenbach really brought our attention to our spiritual ives. Class picnics ------ Especmll the one at Sacred Heart College when we swam in a downpour of Texas showers, wound up a delightful year of being underclassrnen. Though we're going to be Iuniors And older we'll grow, We'll be known for our spirit Where ever we go! JlINl0ll YEAR Dear Diary, Upperclassmen at last! ! ! And the Juniors have moved into Rooms 2, with Sister Hilary, 9 with Sister Emile, and 13 with Sister Baptista. . . ' The Juniors are now sporting their class pins, and gosh, Diary, they're the prettiest yet! Beware, Diary! There is an epidemic of gypsy fever spreading through the Iunior class. Golden earrings, fortune cookies, and gypsy love potion on Iunior Gypsy Day, and gypsy invasion of the T. V. studios proved to be just Juniors in dis-guise. The mood is set for the ong-awaited Operetta, The Gypsy Troubadourn! With Thamer Sacco, the song-bird of our class, playing the lead of Rosita, our presentation was every success we wished. And, Diary, the cast party at Blanton Memorial was an ideal way to end the memorable evening. We Juniors really know how to pick 'em . . .favorites, I mean. Breaking the ribbons as winners were: Annette De Walch, beauty, who also was honored as the St. Thomas Homecoming Queen, Ioan Day, popularity, and Mary Mead, representative. f This Christmas we danced to Ed Gerlach's magical music in the Crystal Ballroom of the Rice Hotel. Diary, you know this story all too well - Study, study, study, then EXAMS. But during Re- ffedt, Out' tired minds were rphpnlmrl mul. D,..sl.,... c-L....---' - 1-J - - - Juniors love to travel, especially after a recent field trip to the airport, which left many Iunior historians eager to take to the skies. This time a trip to court impressed several students. Of course, they just went to observe. Cee, Diary, you should have seen the Iunior Skit at the basketball supper. Bravery medals were pinned on courageous Home Nursing students who presented a farce of a normal class in Home-Nursing. 1 .Diary, this is my big moment. . .floating down the forbidden Blue Stairs with my date, tho traditional visit, and off to twirl to the danceable melodies of Ed Sullivan's orchestra in the plush Houston Club. A perfect Iunior Prom! How many calories in chicken, potato salad, and beans, Diary? Oh well, who cares? Today's the Iurgory-Senior picnic! Good food, happy spirits, and frolicing upperclassmen made this a day to remem er. ' Now, let,s give a cheer for Rosanette Saragusa and Dayna Strother who will lead the Eagles to victory as St. T omas Cheerleaders. To end this year of wonderful events, the Juniors joined wholeheartedly in St. Agnes' tribute to Mary in her Marian Year, and Liturgical Day. The Sodality picnic, The promotion so dear, Say farewell, but yet promise A great Senior Year! SENl0R YEAR If I should appear to be walking in the clouds, don,t worry. They say it happens to all Seniors, but I can,t say I feel any different from last year. Dear Diary, Rooms 1, 3, and 13 have been taken over by the Seniors, and guiding our classes are Sisters Andrew, De Lourdes, and Baptista. Since this is Orientation Week, let's get acquainted, meet my 'little sisterf Starting off the new year right, we elected Mary Mead, Student Body President. A wonderful person, Mary has received many honors during her four years at St. Agnes, the highest of which was her election to Girls' Nation. A band of gold, a motto of truth, encircling the memories of twelve rewarding years. . .this is my Senior Ring, Diary. Out to lunch! That's the sign you'll see on every Senior homeroom door Tuesdays and Thursdays, for this is one of our Senior privileges. Boo! Witches and goblins are on the prowl today. T hey're heading for the Senior Halloween Party. Grabbing up their brooms, the entire student body turned out for a fun-filled afternoon. Pigtails and toothless grins! A new fad? No, just the Seniors, again, reverting to childhood on Little Kid Dayf' Even Santa came to our Christmas party, Diary. Songs, stories, and games left all the Seniors in a happy-holiday mood. We danced to the festive music of Tony Martin's orchestra in the Texaco Country Club as we attended our last annual Christmas Dance. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest, most popular, and best citizen of them all? Did I hear you say Sue Armer for beauty, Kitty Day for popularity, and Mary Mead for the best citizen? Congratu ations on a fine selection. Our last retreat, Diary. Father Monahan made it a most meaningful one for us. ' We,re building a new St. Agnes with paper. fDon't take it literally.j It wonlt take long at the rate everyone is working. Paper drives are loads of fun because everyone is working together. Well, Diary, I guess it,s about time to say goodbye. These have been a wonderful four uears, - - - the best four years of my life. To fret and worry under the brilliant lights That all might suffer what is said from script. To tolerate a flow of precious tears in act While yet aware of useless woe. To die, to sleep: And more -to reproduce each passion life is made of. 'Tis a sacrifice performed by noble men. For who would bear the countless hours of practice, A greasy mask of misery, the prick of critic's pen, Repaid by insolence of empty seats and the scorns of misconceived portrayals, When he himself might his rest incur by common life? Who would heart-aches bear under comedy of character But that nobility of soul and talent of God, Booted with courage and fortitude upholds the actor's life? While in support of backstage hands readying props and I setting lights with moods, Drama is sustained reflecting man to himself And battles the name - instinct. Soft you now! Fair Curtainettes! In to my silent haven of rest, Dark, so dark, as I was tired . . . But hopeful that He would hear my request. I paused for a moment and looked toward Him And I saw that He, too, was alone. For tonight His church was empty of all. No one had come to God's quiet home. I knelt and I prayed for my special wish Saying the prayers I hold so dear, And I kind of heard His soft reply, And I kind of knew He would hear. I lit a candle, and prayed again As the sun went down on another day . . Then I tiptoed out and silently said, Good night, Dear God, I wish I could stay. Now days have passed, and I'm back again To whisper another word. This time, I say, Thank you, God, I'm so very glad that You heard. Now, I wish I could tell the whole wide world That God is their very own . , . And that He will answer their wishes, too Then, He would not be alone. Faithfully standing behind the students and faculty at St. Agnes, is a group of hardworking souls devoting their time and trouble to our problems and needs, and continually helping to improve St. Agnes in one way or another. Thanks to the St. Agnes Mothexs' Club we now have new typewriters, rubber matting in the auditorium, the electric clock on the fourth floor, two new record players, ond many other conveniences we take for granted. We at St. Agnes sincerely appreciate your thoughtfulness, loyal service, patience, perseverance, and untiring efforts through the years, to help make this a better school. Thank you, dear Mothersl Your Daughters. By the kind generosity of our advertisers and patrons this student proiect has been made possible. The patient understanding of Mr. and Mrs. Don Perrine and all the De Marler staff is truly appre- ciated. Also we wish to thank Mr. Peter Whitney for his help with the photography. We would also like to thank Sister 'Hilary for her generous assistance. Last but certainly not least we would like to express in words what every staff member and classmate feels toward dear Sister Andrew. For her untiring efforts when we were deiected, for her endless patience when we were hasty, and especially for her kind direction when we went awry, we say Thank You. The Class of 1955. She went to St. Agnes, a school of great fame. She didn't bring her papers, and her class lost, you lt seems they were having a great paper drive, The seniors were angry, 'cause the sophomores did And the losers had rather be dead than alive. And they know it was 'cause of Mary's great sin. CHORUS lChorusl Mary Jones, Mary Jones, is now in the grave-yard, Alone with her bones. Then down by the river, this girl she did roam She thought of her sin, and let out a great moan ll Then into the river poor Mary did dive Now, this paper drive was a monstrous affair, And now this dear girl is no longer alive. All of the classes brought their papers there. fChorusl But the sophomores had won, and the seniors were sad, And poor Mary Jones was a-feeling so bad. QChorusJ Now when seniors' papers are piled upon high, You'Il see Mary Jones' ghost go floating right by. So take my advice and do all you can, At each paper drive, and then you might win. lChorusD Elizabeth Lake, Thamer Sacco, Betty Jasper A if E za I I t it X One statlon In a mllllon ro Progrdmmed for All the Deon!
