Damuzn, tht Ltptr Damxen, the leper by John Farrow IS a splendnd bxography of 3 noble character of the last century The book 15 well wntten and thoroughly enjoyable told rn an mterest mg story book way rather than m dull bnographxcal manner Damxen the Leper tells the story of a young Belglan Joseph de Veuster who saxled for the Hawauan Islands as a nuss1onary before he was ordamed He adopted the name Danuen at the novmate He was ordamed 1n Honolulu and served various par1shes untxl 1873 Then upon hearmg that a prnest was needed for the leper colony at Molakan he volunteered h1s servxces When he arr1ved the leper colony was 1n a p1t1able condmon The lepers hved m huts that scarcely protected them from the elements They had nexther suiiicnent clothxng nor food When they were sent to the leper colony these lepers were supposed to raxse thenr own food But only the healthxes were able to walk around so lt was rmpossx ble for them to raxse thexr own crops The colony was unsanxtary and dnsease ndden The water was at a great d1stance from the l1v1ng quarters and few 1ndeed were able to carry It back to the colony Water procured under such dxiculnes was used only for drmkmg never for cleanmg Morals d1d not exnst ln the colony -or so you mrght say because to the majorxty moral1ty was unknown These were the condltxons that confronted Father Damxen-enough to make a lesser man leave ln despaxr Father Damlen cared not only for the sp1r1tual welfare of hxs lepers but also for thenr temporal needs He dressed thexr wounds burlt many of the1r cottages made thexr coflins and dug their graves He pleaded w1th the government to send h1s lepers more food and clothmg unt1l the government d1d He pnped water to the colony buxlt a hospxtal and a church and kept up an unceasmg flow of reforms He labored alone 1n the colony for many years Then he h1mself contracted the had become a leper an ass1stant was sent to the 1sland He was followed by others who wlshed to devote thelr lxves to helpmg the lepers Dam1en dxd not rest mn the knowledge that hrs work would go on He kept workmg even when the d1sease had gone mto the worst stage He worked untnl the last days of Ins lxfe He dxed ln 1899 among lus frxends and fellow lepers After readmg Damzen the Leper I am xndebted to John Farrow for a better appre c1at1on of my good fortune nn havmg health and a better appreclatlon of the motnves that caused a man to l1ve h1s hfe 1n the terrxble envxronment of a leper colony w1thout desxre of temporal gam Thxs hfe of Father Damxen made me realxze what great sacrxfices are motnvated solely by love of God MARGARET MOLLOY 39 THE REAL ME She is so mxld and gentle And how are they to think 0 I once heard sazd o me, The secrets o my heart?
