Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1973 volume:

Since its first beginning in 1906, St. Agnes Academy has undergone ad- ditions, subtractions, renovations, and reconstruction; each change being in its own particular time and situation an attempt to meet the needs of Holy Rosary Parish. Thus SAA has never ceased to begin anew as the signs of the times have dictated. Now in 1972-73, we have seen another new beginning as St. Agnes became solely a junior-senior high school, a conversion that has not been with- out its sense of loss. Through all her many changes, however, the center of all her activity has remained steadfastly focused upon the very essence of her existence—HE WHO IS. May this 1973 Crusader Annual celebrate this ancient tradition in another new beginning. SR. VIRGINIA AS WE AND OTHERS KNEW HER SISTER VIRGINIA— One of the pira:. cal principals :J-.e scfcocl eve i Sister Virginia is pictured s DEDICA TION Behind St. Agnes Academ s new beginnings, the one person most significent in both guidance and achievement has been Sister Virginia. Since her arrival in 1944 at SAA, Sister Virginia has dedicated herself untiringly to the advancement of Catholic education in our com- munity. As a result of her wise insight, her countless sacrifices, and her warm concern for every student who passed through our school, Sister Virginia has proven to be a most unforgettable administrator and teacher. May the presence of this valiant woman always be felt within our walls at SAA. 2 With sincere love, we dedicate our 1973 Crusader to you, Sister Vir- ginia. We are deeply grateful for all the steps you have taken over the years to produce such a model of loyalty, and success for the sake of the Kingdom of Christ. STRANGE, FAMILIAR SITES AT ALLIANCE ST. Stix takes seriously his role as the mighty sen- ior, as he initiates the lowly Freshmen. Somehow, Senior year is never long enough to contain all the anticipations of previous years. Like a long awaited Sundae, the months have melted before our eyes, leaving behind re- grets that we were not able to savor all the richness therein. For the class of 73, there will be no repeats, but each will carry away his many leftovers. For all that remain are memories, now, which will soothe away the pain of separation, both for the departing ones and those left behind. Jean provides a somber view of con- templation. I've got pieces of April, Though it's a morning in May. April crowned this evening with many gifts from the Juniors to the Seniors. The occasion appropriately began with an intimate gathering around the Lord's table. Following was the Prom Banquet, wherein the traditional last will and prophecies were read. A mixture of both laughter and tears revealed that the end was close at hand for another Senior class, as Juniors looked apprehensively to their own Senior dreams. The climax of this evening was struck by Bold Lightning who provided the music for the dance on this Night of all nights. Chosen as Queen and King to reign over this enchanted evening were Denise Kosmicki and Jim Steggs. Wreaths of roses and daisies designated them as the senior royalty. The St. Agnes Speech Team did not start its journey until halfway through the 1972 - 73 school year; once they did though, success stared them in the face. It all started when the over- worked speech team made way for the District Speech Contest in Chad- ron, on March 16. Four car-loads of spastics entered Memorial Hall for the competition, and all exited happy people. The reason—all SAA contestants received either a Superior or an Excellent rating in their event. They were (to Sister's left) Katie Kelly, Maggie Brittan; (to Sister's right) Ann O'Connor, Kathy Powers, and Mary Podhaisky. Previous Fiesta funds helped to finance this trip. Rebirth A smiling Bishop shares his Light. One of the best things about being a Senior of 73 was Retreat. In March the class took off for Bethlehem, South Dakota, and a three-day happening with retreat master Fr. Don Larimore and his assistants, the people of the Shrine of the Nativity, and last, but not least, Bishop Sullivan of Grand Island. Seniors have many joyous memories and a quiet peace from their experience at Bethlehem. Bethlehem Caretakers Greg and Don take a laugh break. Terry Kenney, Sharon Jakubowski, Fr. Don, and Rita Hruby demonstrate their friendliness. 54 Fr. Don explains things his way! The Laughing Loafers! JUNIOR HAPPENINGS Retreat It all began on a dreary Sunday afternoon! The Junior class, along with a few former classmates, departed for Camp Norwesca in Chadron State Park for a two-and-a-half day renewal. Buried and isolated behind snow drifts and countless evergreen trees, the cozy retreatants started their sojourn. A blending of Scripture, film strips, music, and ge tti ng- to- know - a nd - appreciate-one-another techniques occupied the majority of the time. Still, there was time for just relaxing with one another. Father Jim Janovec, Father Jim Murphy, Miss Jean Arrants, and Sister Agnes coordinated the events to create an inspirational experience and remembrance for all. Retreat entails a renewal of relationship both with God and neighbor. Tobogganing offered the perfect oppor- tunity for the latter. Father Murphy shared the scene with Father Jim Janovec for these inspiring days. (Due to the fact that Fr. Janovec is camera shy, there is no available photo.) The Peace of Christ be with you, held a special significance. Blessing of Rings The March Wind brought something special to the Junior Class—a whole handful of precious stones. A liturgical gathering celebrated their blessing. Father Murphy accepts the rings from Maggie Brittan as a visible offering of die Juniors themselves. SOPHOMORE — FRESHMAN RETREAT — A The Bayard Retreat House marks the place set apart for the Freshmen and Sophomore days of recollection. Father Rademacher shares insights and joy during these special days. Alone with Cod and nature, one experiences the wisdom of silence. Banners as well as hearts are raised high. Christ-en- counters are truly prayer oriented. 56 The long haul home mirrors a new kind of peace. Science Club Sister Emilia is the head scientist among her group of science lovers. In the spring of the year, the science students present their annual Science Fair. (LEFT) Pat Matthews and Mark Ericteon pose with their creation of a live volcano, and (RIGHT) Dan Murphy demonstrates the principle of hydrology behind this engineering masterpiece. Mrs. Sandy Porter brightened the commercial scene with her pleasant smile, during second semester. s t t u e d a e c n h t e r s Mr. Steve Paulsen proved to be Sr. Emilia's right hand man as he assisted the science depart- ment. 57 END OF THE YEAR The three top scorers in the Chadron Scholastic Contest proudly exhibit the 1st Place Trophy they won for the Class III division. (LEFT TO RIGHT) Ed Kunzman placed 2nd in both English Usage and French I; Ann O'Connor placed 2nd in Art Design; and Herman Wilbrand walked away with 1st in German II. Many other students also ranked highly in their areas and received certificates of honorable mention for their achievement. Chosen as representatives from St. Agnes to Girls' and Boys' State are Mary Podhaisky and Ed Kunzman. 58 In a National German Contest, Herman placed in the 99th per- centile which entitled him to join the rest of the winners on an all expense paid trip to Germany during the summer. It seems that Herman has really proved the German this year! HONORABLE MENTIONS Nancy Powell received spelling honors as the seventh grade winner in the Box Butte County Contest, and as 2nd Place winner in Kimball's District Contest, Making her eligible for entrance into the State Contest in Omaha. Nancy also placed First among seventh graders in the County who entered the D.A.R. History Essay Contest. First Place winners of the Box Butte Soil and Water Conservation Essay Contest are Mary Ann Essay, seventh grade division; and Paul McCune and Julie Podhaisky in the eighth grade division. Julie Podhaisky proved she knows her history by placing First in the eighth grade division in the county's D.A.R. History Essay Contest. Linda Miskimen and Nancy display their blue-ribbon winning posters from the Soil and Water Conservation Poster Contest. 59 Seniors Merit Scholarships Denise Kosmicki displays her certificate of Regency at the University of Nebraska which will extend for four years. Student Council Scholarships were presented to Dan Kunzman and Diane Miskimen. Diane ranked as top scholastic student in the senior class. Dan also won a full four-year scholarship to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska.
