CRUSADER Qt. Academy fiJebiaskfr The staff of the 1964 CRUSADER is proud to dedicate their yearbook to DOCTOR and MRS. JAMES F. KENNEDY--- to Doctor Jim and Mary Loretta. DEDICATED Docftw Both Doctor and Mrs. Kennedy are alumni of St. Agnes Academy. Their son, Terry, was graduated from St. Agnes in 1963. Through the years they have proved themselves to be faithful friends and benefactors to our school as well as active members of the entire community. Mrs. Kennedy, who is an excellent speech teacher, has given her ser- vices to St. Agnes for a number of years. In addition to her many other activities, she accepts the responsibility of the weekly radio program. She taped the radio program given by the 1963 French II class. Her son, Terry, accompanied the class. Before the school year is far along its way the speech students know that Mrs. Kenn- edy insists that they 'go through the warm- ing up exercises' at the beginning of each class. qm L JcuwfiS F. fCeaWy Mrs. Kennedy is never too busy to take a personal interest in each of the students. The for- tunate ones who are enrolled in her classes have priority on her valuable assistance. She helps and encourages them with their work, and rejoices with them in their success. The day Connie Cass was announced State Winner of the VOICE OF DEMOCRACY CONTEST, there was only one person in Alliance who was as happy as Connie,- and that was Mrs. Kennedy. mm PieSGufcutg TV PEOPLE udtfr nuxcfe Tt PEOPLE {Jio luxpfj t l, OM )u tL Tf-ffNG£ thoJb COto htXpjD i; u uCtJMkj CRUSADER STAFF EDITOR............ August 30 and 31, 139 students registered and selected their courses for the school year of 1963-64. . .. Classes began with a half-day of school on Tuesday, Sep- tember 3. . . . And the VERY FIRST MORNING there was a SURPRISE FIRE DRILL. (It was a SURPRISE to everyone, even to Sister Virginia, the Principal. ) tU things that . And Timmy Brittan, the third grade boy who pulled the fire alarm, had to pay the $5. 00 fine from the precious 'Jubilee coins' he had been saving. , THE FOOTBALL SEASON gave us a record of 1 win to 8 lost games. All the students were grieved by the sudden death of Officer Mahlon Cass on November 5. He was a real friend to each of the students. November 22 brought the sad news of Presi- dent John F. Kennedy's assassination. SPONSOR: JOHN DEERE, ALLIANCE, NEBRASKA . . .The girls created fantastic styles of hairdressing. December 13 the REGISTER announced that our Pastor Father Andrew McDonald, had been elevated to the rank of Monsignor. .. . And the Senior Class voted to give up their Senior Trip and to present the $600. 00 they had saved to Father McDonald to help defray his expenses. .. . There were CLASSES, and STUDY HALLS, and ASSEMBLIES. .. . There were PEP RALLIES. .. . And there were DANCES and SOCIALS. .. . And there were SPIRITUAL EXERCISES: Holy Masses, Rosaries, and the Annual RETREAT. .. . And BEFORE WE KNEW IT, the year was over. 7 Yes, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. . . But EVERYONE, including Sister Virginia, was happy the day Jim Kosmicki received a telegram from Senator Hruska, informing Jim that he was one of five competitive alternates for an appoint- ment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. It began in 1890, when Hemingford won the election — by a scant 16 votes -- to determine the site of the court house. In 1898, Alliance voters triumphed, and the county seat was moved here. The comparatively new court house, measuring 48 by 50 feet, was moved the dis- tance of 19 miles balanced on a railroad train. The early settlers came to this territory in their covered wagons. They founded the small village of Grand Lake which was lo- cated just east of the present East Third Street overpass. When the Lincoln Land and Cattle Company filed the original plot of February 25, 1988, the city of Alliance became a reality. The students reported to their classrooms and enrolled in the courses they wanted to take, or were required to take, during the term 1963-64. Nancy Snyder and Tom Van Loan studied the schedule carefully before they regis- tered for their subjects. Cckool Ordinarily we do not have a FIRE DRILL the very first day of school, but this year was not 'ordinary.' When third grade Timmy Brittan turned in the false alarm, he was merely adding to the confusion caused by crowded classrooms and not enough books. The guilty party was soon discovered, and he learned, to his sorrow, that the punishment for his crime was a fine of $5.00, which he had to pay from his own treasured col- lection of fifty-cent 'Jubilee coins.' The POP-BOTTLE Cam- paign was a great success. The Student Council re- ceived a check for $249.73 from Pepsi Cola. The Sophomores contributed the most bottles with the Freshmen as close runner- up.
