AGNES Alliance, it’s Spirit Activities and EDITOR: Sharon Bamrick ASSISTANT EDITOR: Ella May Phillips BUSINESS MANAGERS: Joanne Campbell Bill Walters ACADEMY Nebraska Tradition SPIRIT The spirit of St. Agnes --our school spirit -- is the element which adds life and sparkle to the entire school year. ... It is bursting lungs at pep rallies, ... It is blue and white crepe paper hanging in the halls, and streaming from deco- rated cars and floats, ... It is after-school training sessions, ... It is cramming for exams, ... It is loyal co-operation in class projects, ... It is planning and playing and laughing and praying together, ... It is attending Holy Mass in preparation for school activities, ... It is doing RIGHT because it is the right thing to do--and enjoying it! These are the ACTIVITIES The activities of St. Agnes Academy present the complete school story of the year. Our school story includes more than: . . . sports, . . . assembly programs, . . . and dances. It includes: . . . spiritual exercises, . . . classroom activities, . . . lab experiments, . . . and assignments, as well. This year, when everyone is talking so much about rocket ships and satellites as well as the in- adequacies of our educational system, it becomes more and more important to show the academic side of the story. Satisfying and beloved as our traditions may be, they do have a wonderful way of linking the past with the present. education acquired at St. Agnes, the customs which will continue to be precious among the memories of the students. Among these traditions are: . . .The crowning of the Blessed Mother as Queen of May; . . . The burning of the A on the eve of Homecoming; . . . The crowning of.the Homecoming Queen; . . . The blessing of the class rings before they are received by the Juniors; . . . The weekly Holy Hour on Thursday These traditions do not hinder originality, nor do they substitute for new ideas. They are the customs which have been firmly established through years of use, the customs which have become a part of the This is the TRADITION 0 RIGHT REVEREND MONSIGNOR FRANCIS J. KELLER Francis J. Keller was born October 23, 1880 in Mindelheim, Bavaria. As a lad of six he came to America and made his home in Louisville, Kentucky. In response to the call of the Divine Master; Come, follow Me, and I will make you a fisher of men, he entered Pontifical College Josephinum in 1895, at Columbus, Ohio. Bishop James J. Hartley of Columbus, Ohio, ordained him a Priest of Jesus Christ June 16, 1907, for the Diocese of Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1917, Father Keller was accepted into the Diocese of Grand Island, Nebraska, to serve as secretary to the bishop and Chancellor of the Diocese. In 1918, he was made the first pastor of Chappell, Nebraska, where he served for seven years. During his next appointment to Anselmo, Nebraska, which continued from 1925 to 1942, he built a magnificent church. He served at Ogallala, Nebraska, for eight years, from 1942 to 1950. Then he was appointed chaplain at St. Joseph's Hos- pital here in Alliance, Nebraska. Prior to his service here, he received the honor of Domestic Prelate, thus gaining the title of Right Reverend Monsignor Keller. This honor was conferred upon him in 1949. Right Reverend Monsignor Keller was appointed Pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Alliance, Nebraska, June 1, 1954. During these past years Monsignor Keller has been our priest, our teacher, and our friend. We are proud to dedicate our '61 Crusader to Monsignor Keller. You know well that the end and aim of our school is to help you to know, love, and serve God better. It is with deep satisfac- tion that we watch you mature spiritually. Our school offers you not only the usual subjects taught in secondary schools, but, knowing that it is the over and above which shows your worth, we have also added those which offer a challenge to you. We urge you to strive for'this over and above spiritually and academically. May God be with you always. Sincerely, The biggest and most important project of the summer of 1960 was the moving of the library to the large room which for many years had served as a study hall. This room provides ample space where the students enjoy reading for information and for recreation. Among the subjects which St. Agnes Aca- demy offers to the students who want to do work which is over and above are: . . . languages; both Latin and French, . . . secretarial training; both typing and shorthand as well as bookkeeping and business math, . . . four years of mathematics, ... a complete science program including physics and chemistry. These subjects are a challenge to the en- terprising student who wants to obtain a thorough preparation for college work. Sister Marina Behind the scenes in every large project and every large institution we find the generous people whose work is seldom noticed but is very essential to the suc- cess of the institution. Sister M. Loretta is busy with her many duties as portress. Sister M. Mafalda and her faithful helpers, Mrs. Ludmila and Mrs. O'Connor, prepare well balanced meals for the students at St. Agnes. Sister Humiliata and Mrs. De Bock are working cheerfully in the laundry. Joe Coupens is the handy man who keeps things in running order. Lillian Krejci has a very artistic way of arranging the flowers for the chapel altar. 16 Mary Ana Anderson Donna Bamrick Jean Bamrick Dale Englehaupt Elizabeth Feighney Judi Fitzgerald Elaine Gauvain Sponsor: STAR LITE THEATER 18 Sponsor: JACK AND JILL Alliance Three promoters for the '61 Crusader; Donna Bamrick, Susan Ressegieu, and Linda Hagan.
