1 1 THE StAg OUR THEME FOR 1950 We HOLD these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights govern- ments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, and may we add, that to secure these rights schools are instituted among Catholics de- riving their just powers likewise, from the consent of the gov- erned. Among these schools we find St. Agnes Academy whose aim is to serve the most precious interests of Catholic Youth by cultivating in them an intelligent appreciation of Catholic- ism and of the traditions of American democracy. Thus, she includes in her curriculum the whole aggregate of human life— the spiritual and moral, the intellectual, the cultural and social, and the physical. ST. Page 2 DEDICATION During the past six years, we, the seniors of the Class of '50, have been beautifully influenced by the inspiring example of Mother Virginia, our principal. As friend and director she has devoted her time unselfishly to our interests, guiding our ardors and enthusiasms, awakening hopes and ambitions, yet curbing our restless adventures. As principal and teacher she has worked zealously toward the enrichment of our high school life—broadening the curriculum, improving equip- ment and undertaking new methods. The extraor- dinary achievements of Mother Virginia's piano stu- dents have become Nebraska known. In the future which is now opening for us, we hope to make her favorite expression, We have confidence in you, boys and girls, ring true. Thus with admiration, affection and gratitude, deep and true, we dedicate this memento of our happy days at St. Agnes to Mother M. Virginia. And as you studied your history you noticed that the seeds of the new period were planted in the old, but that it took a long time for the blossom and the fruit to develop. On graduation day you will put a definite end to one period of your lives. You will find the new period different in this way, that you will have more responsibilities and you will need courage and Faith. During the period which is ending the Sisters have labored to plant deep into your souls the seeds of courage and Faith. They look for- ward now to see the fruit of their labors. Religion is taught in the Catholic school both formally and prac- tically. Boys and girls are instructed in the principles which underlie their Faith. They are also trained in the practices of morality which make for sterling manhood and womanhood. For this, if for no other reason, Catholic schools are maintained. JPul QajuJl (from King-Size by Dick King in the Alliance Times-Herald) Tuesday was the first chance this writer had to see the St. Agnes Academy in action in a basketball game. And what I saw of Box Butte County's Class D school was very impressive. The five St. Agnes starters against Hemingford played the entire 32 minutes without a substitution but they did not show the lack of reserves until the waning moments. The Irish snap the ball around like collegians and play a much faster brand of ball than most local fans are used to seeing. Alliance High School cagers do not play the ball like Bearden, Beiber, Burke, Strong and Gerdes do. The Irish do not play the deliberate style of ball; by that I mean they do not play a stalling game like Oklahoma A. and M. does. They do play the ball waiting for an opening and when it comes, they capitalize on it. It would be interesting to keep a record on all field-goal attempts taken by the Irish. I believe it would be surprisingly high. They complete a good 40 per cent of their shots and that's big time, brother. St. Agnes is hampered by the lack of Class D schools in the area. The only schools in their class w;ithin a 60 mile radius are Hyannis and Mullen. The Academy, therefore, has to schedule Class C schools. To Sister Laurissa, our senior sponsor, we do give and bequeath our fond affection and gratitude. To the junior class, we give our beautiful classroom. This includes the electric clock and all the knick knacks on the windowsills. To the sophomore class, we wish to give the virtue of humility. To the freshmen, we will a few ideas for initiating the freshmen of l952-'53. Clara Mae Schwartz wills her work in the music corridor to Margie Masek. We have traveled ten years down the long road of life. Our paths are many and varied, but we have met again for our class reunion. Who is this dignified young matron? I seem to recognize her loquacious manner. Oh, yes, it's Cecilia. She's married now to that famous young lawyer who is running for United States Senator this year. And here's another old school day friend. Re- member Donna Barta? She and her hubby are happily ensconced on the family farm near Heming- ford. They have two—or is it four—little redheads running around there, too. Have you heard about Miss Wilmott's Home for Unmarried Working Girls? Yes, it's none other than our old pal, Beverly. Clara Mae, our dignified senior, has acquired her Ph. D. at Smith College. If you should be driving along a country road north of Alliance, you may see the prosperous farms of Gerald Goetzinger and Martin Freimuth. They're still neighbors and the best of friends. Their sons are schoolmates now at District 46, the little pink schoolhouse on the hill. Norma Boyce and her husband have taken over the management of a dress shop in downtown Alliance. Drop in for a chat some day, girls. The next person that my eye falls upon is none other than Patsy Flaherty. Pat has traveled all the way from New York for this reunion. She is singing at the Met now, you know. And here's our Casanova of schooldays, Dick Strong. He's still a dashing bachelor and the operator of a very successful night club in Chicago. Let s find Margie Beal. Surely she is here somewhere. Could that be Margie over there in the corner. It is and she has with her her three- year-old daughter, the very image of her mother. Teresa Rock has made good use of all that shorthand speed she acquired during our senior year. She s Doctor Joseph Gerdes's very efficient receptionist. Did we tell you about Joe? He's one of the leading physicians in Omaha. Doctor Burley Bearden is present, too. He's quite famous as a bone surgeon at Mercy Hospital in Denver. And who doesn't recall Jodine McNertney? She has managed to wrangle enough time from her busy schedule to be present at the class reunion although she has just completed a tour for the Community Concert Association. Deloris Evans, a Mrs. now, flew in from Hyannis with her husband this morning. A plane is almost standard ranch equipment now. Dorothy Manion did not attain her ambition to be the first woman pilot for TWA airlines. She is a farm-wife now, also a very capable pilot of the private plane which she and her husband own. The swimming enthusiast in the crowd has found a way by which she can swim in any of the major cities of the United States free of charge. Helen Rizzi is owner of a chain of swimming pools across the nation, including the famous Rizzi Plunge at Hot Springs, South Dakota. I see a tall, distinguished fellow chatting with Helen over there in the corner? Can that be Eugene Beiber? That's who it is. Pedes” is owner and manager of the Neat N' Sweet Dry-Cleaners. Have you been at the Municipal Airport re- cently? If so, perhaps you met George Rubenthaler out there. He is operating Rube's Flying Service, and is really making a success of it. Some of that trick flying he does makes one's hair stand on end. Of course Bernard Burke is here, resplendent in a Kelly green riding suit. They say he is making millions on that cattle ranch of his. Our own Blondie, Sheila Mulick, has climaxed a brilliant nursing career by becoming Superintendent of Nurses at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Her duties prevented her attending our class reunion, but our thoughts are with her. Arlene Becker and her husband operate the Hi-Y Dude Ranch near Helena, Montana. They are both expert riders and often perform duo acts in the Sunday afternoon rodeos given for the benefit of their dude guests. Our sunny-faced Marcelene Thompson has married and settled down on a farm near Dalton. She has three daughters, each one as pretty as her mother. And last, but definitely not least, is Lorene Rohrbouck. She has married one of her Hyannis boy friends, and no longer does she go out with a different date every night. The years have treated us kindly. Let us all give thanks to God for the many gifts that we have received since last we met. Dear old St. Aqnes when school days are o’er We look to the future, the grand, gold- en shore, When dear old St. Agnes can point in her pride To all who have called her both teacher and guide.
