BJLDJL Our Senior year was marked by the beginning of the reign of Pope john XXIII. Born of poor parents in a little village called Sotto Il Monte, Angelo Guiseppi Roncalli had decided to become a priest by his eleventh birthday. Now, nearing his 77th birthday, he has been chosen Pope. The love and affection he bears his subjects is clearly evident by his desire to be fully a Pastorf, Pope John XXIII,s rigorous activities thus far are only the beginning of beneficial religious leadership for Catholics and the whole world. 31--4 -J Lq X31 4 . .i ,af - I' 4115.1 Pope Pius XII's nineteen-year reign came to an abrupt end with his death on October 9, 1958. Albertonians joined the world in mourning the beloved pontiff whose desire for world peace and love for all mankind will live forever. Born in Home in 1876, Eugenio Pacelli was elected Pope 63 years later. He saw more de- struction and human barbarism than perhaps any other Pope. He saw the rise of Fascism, Nazism, and Communism, two world wars, the advent of the atomic age, unrest and change in the Soviet bloc and in the Suez crisis. His concern for world affairs did not hinder his interest in educa- tion and youth. Pope Pius XII was the only Pope we knewg his reign spanned our lifetime. We will not soon forget the man who said, My mission is peace. The only weapon I carry is the cross.

The Most Bev. John F. Dearden, Arch- bishop of Detroit and former Bishop of Pittsburgh, will long be remembered for his profound interest in Catholic education. Under his guidance and care, the Pittsburgh Diocese schools flourished. He led an im- pressive building program in which millions of dollars worth of schools were erected, including our own auditorium-gymnasium. His leadership was most evident in religious activities, however, as his priestly interest extended to the welfare of souls. A new spiritual leader took his place in the hearts of Albertonians when His Excel- lency, john J. Wright, became the eighth Bishop of Pittsburgh and successor to Arch- bishop Dearden. The new Bishop, a native of Boston, studied in Rome. After returning to the United States, his career steadily rose, and in 1950 he became the country's youngest Catholic bishop to head a diocese. His intense interest in education in the past assures us that he will continue the splendid work of his predecessor.
