Growing out ofacrying need of the newly settled Poles for services in a tongue known to them, the second oldest Polish parish in Pittsburgh owes its existence to the zealous efforts of members of St. Adalbert's committee. Under the guidance of the first assigned pastor, Rev. Victor Zareczny, the faith and generosity of the Poles resulted in the initiation of work on the erection of a church building, St. .Iohn's parish on 14th Street graciously provided facilities for the divine liturgy each Sunday in the course of the building. With frequent changes of resident pastors and the filling of the interim by Polish priests of religious congregations, the task of building was greatly impeded. By 1884 the parishioners were able to offer their prayers in a temple of their own. The appointment of Rev. Ladislaus Miskiewicz in 1885 provided the impetus for expansion. The steady stream of immigrants necessitated an edifice of larger proportions. Under his leadership the present church building took form at a cost of S80,000. ln October of 1890 the church was dedicated by Rt. Rev. R. Phelan. ln 1911, during the pastorate of Rev. John Gorzynski, the needed repairs were combined with the work of remodeling at a cost of 5IS22,000. It was then that the 150 foot steeples were removed. ln 1923, thanks to his efforts the wooden altars were replaced by marble ones costing S-l0,000. These were consecrated on November 29, 1923 by Rt. Rev. Archbishop Regis Canevin, Bishop H, Boyle, and Bishop J. Swint. As a preparation for the Golden Jubilee in 1923 the build- ings were sandblasted on the outside and renovated on the interior at a cost of S20,000. The present pastor, Rev. Ladislaus Rokosz, from the time of his arrival in the parish as pastor in 1942, has continued the work ofhis predecessors, Rev. Joseph Frania, and Rev. Theo- dore Schultz, maintaining the buildings in condition and making improvements: periodic renova- tions, roof repairs, storm windows, so that the value of the church property now exceeds a half- million dollars. lt was here that through the decades hundreds of our forebears received spiritual life through Baptism, were restored to God's friendship through Penance, opened their hearts to the Eucharistic Christ, professed loyalty to God through Confirmation, sanctified their love through Matrimony, gained strength and grace through participation in the Mass, and made a final stop after death before being laid to rest in the parish cemetery. Direct and fashion men to purity Graduation time brings into focus the enormity of our debt for a truly Catholic education to our beloved pas- tor, Father Rokosz. Blessed with his paternal interest, our school days at St. A's High will remain memorable for all time to come. We acknowledge his effi- cient stewardship in the material well- being of the parish, and in the new edifice nearing completion. We express our sincere thanks for all and promise to show forth the fruits of a fine Catholic education by becoming worthy adult parishioners. We go forth intolife knowing that our feet have been set on the right road and that the prayers of our assistant pastors follow us. The many services rcnd ered, the guidance bestowed on us, have marked them indeliblv in our hearts and minds. May God's blessing enable them to lead many others onward. a 1 GQ Qc , 6 Parish +G- Priests of morals and integrity of life. Chosen from among men to represent men in their dealings with God, our priests are the other Christs' caring for our spiritual welfare. Through their ministry our lives have become enriched by the greatest Sacri- fice - Mass, the sacraments, the word of God, and prayerful support. What greater work is there than training the mind and torming the habits ot the young? Perfect schools are not so much the result of good methods as of good teachers. How well experience has convinced us of the truth of the papal sentence. We are deeply grateful to our teachers for their continued efforts in forming our patterns of thought, in placing before us high ideals, in instilling in us principles of correct living. As we bid our fond adieu, we can assure you that the fine example you have set before us by yourlife of dedication and service will be remembered and emulated. Ladislaus Miskiewicz, then pastor, attempted to provide educauon for the youngsters of the parish. For lack of space, this school was limited to one classroom of 120 children taught by Mr. John Bruchwalski. The following year the increase in enrollment necessitated partitioning of the church building into several classrooms on weekdays to serve as schoolrooms. When in 1890 the present church building was erected, the old building was converted into a school containing 9 classrooms on the lower two floors and an auditorium on thethird Hoor. With the rapid growth of the parish it became imperative to seek additional quarters. For years the problem was solved by setting up the 'portables' in the parish lot now being occupied by the new auditorium. Here, under conditions far from favorable, many ofthe present day parishioners obtained their grade school educauon. Due to the location of the school near the railroad tracks, both the teachers and students were greatly inconvenienced in performing their tasks by noise made by trains in passing In June of 1944 when an op- portunity to buy a neighboring public school presented itself, the pastor, Rev. Ladislaus Rokosz, purchased the building, renovated it, and presented it as school quarters for students returning in September. It was here that St. Adalbert High School was born in September of 1944 with the formation of a ninth grade. On May 28 of 1947 when Sister Mary Laurentia was principal, Dr. Edwin Cruttenden of the State Department of Public Instruction made a supervisory visit prior to accrediting the high school. In January of the following year while Sister Mary Eugenia was principal, the task was completed. The acitivity of the Felician Sisters of St. Adalbert School dates back to 1888. At the request of Rev. L. Miskiewicz, three Sisters from the Detroit Province under Mother Mary Cajetan assumed the task of educating the youth of the parish. Through the ensuing years the Sisters from the Coraopolis Province have labored with their num- ber growing until at the present time 16 sisters with Sister Mary Chrysostom as principal devote their energies to the greatest task - the Christian Education of Youth. The focal point of religious devotion - the Mass, the divinely efficacious means of grace - the Sacraments, the sacred ritual so wonderfully instructive, the material fabric of the churches with its art and liturgy - all loudly proclaim the transient nature of things temporal, and draw our attention to the duty of making manifest in our mortal flesh the life of Christ that will merit for us the beatific vision. Although we leave school, we go forth confidently knowing that the sacra- mental and devotional treasures of the Church will be ours to use throughout life. Religion in Daily Life. During the years of its existence, St. Adalbert Parish has given spiritual birth through Baptism to 16,705 souls. The first recorded Baptism is that of Antonina Dembowski by Rev. Victor Zareczny on February 24, 1884. The last record- ed baptismal event is that of Ralph George Schimborski by Rev. Ferdiand Sojka on January 26, 1958. The parish has sanctified the love of man and woman and begged God 's blessing on their wedded life through the sacrament of Matrimony 4257 times in the course of its 75 years of spiritual service. The first marriage recorded is that of Casimir Fifer and Mary Migawa by Rev. Victor Zareczny on April 14, 1884. The marriage of David G. McKenna and Anna May Bartirome by Rev. Ignatius Aranowski on February 8, 1958 is the last recorded. life in Christ. In keeping with a Polish custom, Father Sojka blesses a home during the Christmas season. Perfection ot society comes from the perfection ot the elements that compose it. Spiritual benefits of Sodality are extended to newly received Freshmen. Rosary Society members nourish their spiritual life through monthly reception of the Sacraments. Church organizations in the parish are numer- ousg they are of varied kinds ranging from those for youngsters to those for adults, from those purely spiritual in nature to those actively engaged in services of charity. Why have such groups? What is their value and the reason for their existence? The church societies are meant to benefit the individual members and the parish asawhole. Since the prime duty of life is the salvation of the soul, these organizations are instruments by which we, as members of the Mystical Body ofChrist, perfect ourselves and then extend our work to our brethren. Parish Organizations Catholic War Veterans organization aims to help the ex-serviceman sanctify himself. Christian Mothers exhibit charity by serving the Ring Day breakfast. The prayers, retreats, group reception of the Sacra- ments, participation in church services are all potent helps towards the attainment of this goal. Realizing that man is a social being, these groups provide members and others with forms of recrea- tion while at the same time materially aiding the -parish in its task of maintenance. Dances, bingos, luncheons, are but few such activities. We gratefully acknowledge spiritual and tempo- ral aid showered on us during the years spent in school. In time to come we plan to assume and perform duties as members of church organiza- tions. .pl 4. Holy Name members listen atten- tively as Rev. I. The subject of Christian education is man, wholeand entire, soul united to body in unity of nature, with all his faculties natural and supernatural. For this reason physical culture, as it iscalled, cannot be considered outside the range of the mater- nal supervision of the Church, since it is also a means which may help or harm Christian education. Catholic Education Cognizant of her role, the Church, set by her Divine Author as the pillar and ground of truth to teach the divine faith to men, to keepwhole and inviolate the deposit confided to her, to fashion men in all their actions individually and socially to purity of morals and integrity of life, finds it necessary not only to give religious instruction to the young at certain fixed periods, but to see that every subject taught is permeated with Christian piety. Only if this sacred atmosphere pervades and warms the hearts of teachers and students alike, can good be ex- pected from any kind of learning. Our was the good fortune to be blessed with such Catholic educa- tion.
