MISCELLANEOUS Gaucho pants with vests, jumpsuits, knee- length skirts all accented the fashion scene for women as well as three-piece vested suits. Leisure suits, Levi's and three-piece suits accompanied the men's style. However, Levi's prevailed. A bottle of soda was 306. A pack of gum was 154. Candy bars cost 206. Skateboarding and surfing were very popular during this period. All 1977 cars came out with a speedometer that exceeded nothing over 85 mph and there were rectangular headlights. The Big Mac Attack hit Daytona. For the first time in years, students came to school with a blanket of snow on their cars. NA T I ONAL America celebrated its 200th birthday of inde- pendence. CBS saluted the American Bicentennial with 527,000 Bicentennial Minutes. Succeeding President Gerald Ford, the Gover- nor of Georgia, jimmy Carter, was elected the 39th President of the United States on November 4, 1976. Inauguration took place on january 20, 1977. ' Gary Gilmore, 36, was the first person to be executed in the United States in nearly 10 years. On Monday, january 17, at 10:06 A.M. he was executed by a firing squad at Point of the Mountain, Utah. 7,000,000 Americans were out of work between 1976 and 1977. Inoculations were distributed throughout the United States to prevent epidemics of Swine Flu from breaking out. What in the World? , SPORTS The Cincinnati Reds won the World Series against the New York Yankees in four straight games. Franco Harris, fullback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was awarded the Gladiator's Award as NFL Man of the Year. It was awarded, for 1000+ yardage, on December 26, 1976. Nadia Comaneci, 15 year old gymnast from Rumania, was the first to be rewarded with a perfect 10 on the opening night of the Olym- pic's gymnastic schedule in Montreal, Canada. She went on to win three gold medals, one silver and one bronze. Bruce Jenner, a 25 year old American athlete, won the 1976 Olympic decathlon with a record total of 8,618 points. Along with the gold medal for the 10 events, he won the title World's Greatest Athlete. Zenda Liess competed at Forest Hills and in the Virginia Slims Tournament. Steve Reeves placed fourth in the junior Division in surfing on the North Shore of Hawaii. The Unitd States earned 34 Gold Medals at the Olympics.
