There were eight girls competing for the six Varsity spots. Their ordeal consisted of tryouts in front of four judges, and then in a assembly for the complete student body, after which the stu- dents cast their votes. The combination of the vote and the tryouts produced the following cheerleaders for next year; Sharri Kunze, Judy Crandall, Carla Waters, Sandy Beck, Michelle Goodrich, and Natalie Child. 64 ASSEMBLIES 1 BLITHE SPIRIT CAST Charles’ ..... Then they are to be found writing with the eraser, complaining of lack of paper, pen, pencil, intelligence, broken arms, and writing ability. Contrary to popular belief, the newspaper staff really does exist, nominally to be sure, but none the less, there. 76 CLUBS ORCHESTRA The Springville High School Orchestra had an excellent year play- ing at various locations throughout the state. Led by David Marsh, they were able to perform extremely well. The students that perform in this group are the elite and most musically inclined in the school. They showed this by performing very well throughout the year and supporting the good name of Springville High. A’CAPPELLA Top left to right: Lorna Whitney. Mary Jo Anderson. Dalene Peterson. The Springville High School Band took a major step this year by aquiring new uniforms. The uniforms include a matching set for the Tall Flag Corps that perform with the marching band. The new uniforms have been praised by many spectators. We think that they are the best looking uniforms in the state. This year the Marching Band really came of age, placing well in several marching competitions. They placed fourth in the Rocky Mountain Marching Band Competition, edging out such large schools as Kearns and Ben Lomand. Their best performance of the year in competition came at the Nebo Tournament of Bands where they placed third in the open division (open to only the best bands in the state) placing ahead of Cottonwood and several other bands. The praise that the marching band has earned this past year has been well deserved. The concert band has made great strides towards excellence this year also. In concerts to date the band had drawn excellent reviews. The sound of the goup is maturing at a good rate and should only improve in coming years. Center front and clockwise: Willa Harris. Members of the group who have been recognized as outstanding soloists include: Garth Allred, tenor saxophone; John Barrus, trombone; James Anderson, trombone; Terri Davis, piano; and Mary Bishop, piano. 80 CLUBS Bftatt Hamifloi 'sally Dunn Paul Ogilvie Collete Bassetq Richard Murdoc John Averett .eslie Hardman •Jeff Young inko Yoshihan bteve Steele Berty Knight Tson If you've come early some morning and heard music blast- ing through the halls, you’re sure to know it’s the SHS Hi’s busy at practice. The primary aims of the Future Farmers of America is the development of agricultural leader- ship. cooperation, and citizenship. Through participation in the FF'A, members learn by taking part in and conducting meetings, speaking in public, participating in contests based on occupational skills, earning awards and recognition, and becoming involved in a cooperative effort and community improvement. This year members participated in the Sub for Santa program in conjunction with the Lions Club. Also, they were involved in the Building Our American Communities program, that makes our communities a better place in which to live. The club received many awards on the area, state and national levels this year. The Ski Club exists to provide bus transportation to local ski resorts at a reasonable price and to provide opportunities for association and friendship with other skiers in the school. We usually have an opening social in October or November. This year we saw a ski movie and had hot chocolate and donuts at Jacci Aldredge’s house. We had two trips scheduled to Park City West in De- cember, but had to cancel them due to the lack of snow this year. Many of the sophomores didn’t have to dress up at all. Tuesday, every- one got to wear their favorite hats. On Wednesday, some stu- dents dressed as their favorite people. Most seniors already were. There was a pep-rally Thursday night where every- one got excited for Friday’s game. On Friday, there was a parade and later a Powder Puff football game. The varsity foot- ball game was against Cedar City and we stumped them 26- 0. Saturday night a special dance was held. The theme was, “Reunited.” OmH«zcmjo 100 DANCES s A D I E HThis year’s Sadie Hawkins Dance was a great success. It was the most popular dance of the year at S.H.S., because girls could ask the boy of her choice and he had to pay. The dance was traditionally decorated with bales of hay and bunches of corn stocks. The couples added to the mood by dressing hillbilly style. Many happy couples were married at the dance and the theme song was “Rainbow Connection.” LiT Abner was Donald Jenkins, and Daisy Mae was Debbie Harris. After twelve hard years of books, lectures, tests, and reports, you finally reach the goal you thought you would never achieve. The senior’s year at Springvillc high, was filled with planning for the future. There was registering for the A.G.T. test, filling out scholarship applications, forms for admission, and of course graduation forms. But along with all this planning, our Senior Class officers were busy planning some fun. This was exhibited with the Senior Breakfast. Homecoming. Senior Float. Senior As- sembly. and our memorable Senior Prom. The senior year is filled with excitement and anticipation. Many thanks to our wonderful faculty and staff, for their patience when we were sophomores, tolerance when we were juniors, and most of all for the help they gave us in preparing us for a successful, happy future as seniors. A diamond is not a casual purchase. You want it to be worn and enjoyed throughout a lifetime. That's why you should never compromise on the beauty and value of the diamond you buy, regardless of its size. You should look for a diamond that's been painstakingly cut and polished to bring out all of its natural brilliance and beauty, one that meets the exact- ing standards that have been established as ideal. These are called ideal cut diamonds. A diamond cut too shallow to make it look bigger lets some of the light “leak out through ♦ the bottom and appears watery. j -n ♦ One cut too deep lets J light “leak through the tv sides and appears j black in the center when compared | , to an ideal cut diamond. You can see the astonishing v difference yourself. LK Ideal .Cut Diamonds ensure you of getting the most beauty and value. IDEAL CUT DIAMOND JEWELER Why is cut so important? Because with diamonds, un- like colored gems, beauty depends on light reflection. When a diamond is ideally cut, its 58 facets are placed in precise symmetrical relation to others. They act as a series of tiny mirrors, constantly capturing and reflecting light and bouncing it back through the top of the stone in a brilliant blaze. DUKES JEWELRY 220 S. The L'Artiste of 1980 consists of 248 pages. 850 copies were print- ed. The yearbook staff thanks: Larry Johnson of Gene's Photography for the student and clubs pictures, Springville Hearld for providing assistance with photography, and for printing a sixteen page Spring Supplement, Charles Lowery who provided team pictures for the athletic events, 'Mr. Bill’ (Baker) from Jostens, Sharp’s Photography who provided the picture of the student body officers, and a special thanks to the students of Springville High who made this year a memorable L’Artiste. A SPECIAL TRIBUTE Mrs. Pehrson started her teaching career in Southern Utah where she met and married George Pehrson. After their marriage, they moved to Idaho where they taught school together, and he coached athletics. George was later hired to be foot- ball coach at Springville High School and later became a counselor at the Junior High School. Mrs. Pehrson became the librarian for our school. She has enjoyed being associated with young people because it has helped her to keep a youthful attitude towards life. She has raised two sons and enjoys her five grandchildren. She is looking forward to the coming years because she plans to travel and play golf which are two of her special hobbies. SUPPLEMENT-225 TRACK Left to right-Row 1: Reid Burrows.
