I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its constitu- tion; to obey its laws; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies. Loyal to the Springville High, Long may her colors fly. Stand, the Red and Blue passes by, let every loyal man salute. Here's to all the victories, here's to the faithful team. Let us praise the Springville High School and shout for the Red and Blue! To the Coach, to the Team, to the Faculty members we all esteem. To the pep, to the vim, to the loyal supporters who help us win. To the Red, to the Blue, to the sportsmanship that will pull us through. Let's shout, let's cheer, let's give nine rahs for the best school year. Loyal to the Springville High, Long may her colors fly. Stand, the Red and Blue passes by, let every loyal man salute. Here's to all the victories, here's to the faithful team. Let us praise the Springville High School and shout for the Red and Blue! HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL THAT THEY ARE ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR WITH UNALIENABLE RIGHTS, THAT AMONG THESE ARE LIFE LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS This is a history of our own corner of America. A small corner perhaps, but one where we take advantage of the freedoms won for us by our forefathers. An active, fun-loving corner. Life with it's good times and bad continues in full swing at SHS. Here we enjoy the liberties of learning, playing, and growing. People striving for something called happiness- and finding it in special and different ways. They produced the Homecoming as- sembly, giving us a glimpse of the kind of stu- dents SHS had running around the halls twenty years ago. (Some of the jokes were as good as the ones Wes Ruff and Craig Pickering tell.) The alumni also showed us that they are still inter- ested in Springville High through the activities of their sons and daughters who are today's sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Spirit ran high during Homecoming week with the woodpile compitition being the climax. The Sen- ior Class came out triumphant with the Junior Class and Sophomore Class tieing for second place. The Class of '76 also ran away with first prize in both the float competition and the bug race. The best window decoration was awarded to the Junior Acappella and best decorated door to the NFL Club. 18 LEFT TO RIGHT: Karen DeRose, attendant; Karalyn Dunn, queen; Kaye Whiting, attendant. 19 SADIE HAWKINS Sadie Hawkins is the time of year when a girl finds out how hard it is to ask a guy for a date, especially when she is asking him to foot the bill Judging from the turnout at this year's dance, it is obvious that the girls at SHS managed to get the job done. Joy Giacomo and Steve Sumsion were presented to the student body as Daisy Mae and Li I' Abner at the Carbon Pep Assembly. They were riding the horse which will long be remembered for his tribute to Carbon. With hay bales and corn stalks, the cafeteria was transformed into a Dogpatch barnyard. The group Thunderbuckram provided dancing music while Marryin1 Sams-Mark Fullmer, Jim Pratt, Lee Clark, and Craig Pickering-tied the knot for the happy couples. 20 Joy Giacomo, Daisy Mae; Steve Sumsion, Lil' Abner. 21 SENIOR PROM With flashing lights on a red and blue Spirit of '76 , the senior assembly opened. This show of senior pride set the mood for the entire assembly and dance. Various displays of talent were intro- duced by the three Spirits of '76 who tied the assembly together. The royalty was introduced in a dreamy fashion with Mark Fullmer and Jim Pratt singing the theme song, We May Never Pass This Way Again . Every senior in the school left feeling just a little melancholy, realizing, perhaps for the first time, that these times can never be relived. That night the Art Gallery was filled with people dancing to the music of Honey and Soul . The last of the seniors to promenade were king and queen. Jack Elmer and Pam Miner; prince and princess, Daniel Stuart and Joanne Dean; duke and duchess, David Cobbley and Sherri Fullmer. 22 Duke and Duchess DAVID COBB LEY and SHERRI FULLMER King and Queen JACK ELMER and PAM MINER Prince and Princess DANIEL STUART and JOANNE DEAN 23 SWEETHEART BALL 24 Following the yellow brick road, Cindy Sophomore searched desperately for her secret valentine. Along the way, she ran into Brainless Junior and Heartless Senior, who joined her in hopes of finding their missing parts. Much to their disappoint- ment, at the end of the road they found that there was no hope for them. However, Cindy found her Stanley Super Sophomore and they lived happily ever after! Does that sound like a sophomore assembly or does that sound like a sophomore assembly?!? Well, it was the sophomore's introduction to their Sweetheart Ball. After all the scenery was gone and the munchguts were off stage, Glen Barney and Franky Marsh were introduced as this year's royalty, while little Chrissy Pratt sang the theme song, Best of My Love. The following evening, they were again introduced at the dance, this time with the group. Peace and Quiet, playing the theme. FI NI AN'S RAINBOW The abundance of talent contained by the students of SHS was shown in this year's production of Finian1: Rainbow. Christie Bartlett showed outstanding dancing abilities while Rachael Knight, Jim Pratt, and other members of the cast displayed talents in acting and musicianship. Even though rehearsals got long and tedious just before opening night, everybody involved had alot of fun getting to know people and making new friends. Director Rodney Peterson said, The cast worked extremf ly hard on this production, and when one works as hard as they did one is bound to have a successful per- formance. 26 CAST DANCERS Finian Sharon Woody Susan Og Rawkins Buzz Sheriff Robust Shears Geologists 1st Share cropper 2nd Sharecropper 3rd Sharecropper 1st Gospeler 2nd Gospeler 3rd Gospeler Deputies Howard Henry Honeylou Jane Diane Gary Miner Rachael Knight Jim Pratt Christie Bartlett Bret Boyer Brad Day Mark Fullmer Gregg Smith Brett Anderson Steve Sumsion Don Aldridge Steve Sumsion John Oglvie Terry Ferris Julie Hopkinson Brent Curtis Terry Ferris Robert Corry Lynn Grover Steve Sumsion Kyle Elder Randall Hall Missy Allan Shellie Eves Peggy Smith Debbie Binks Chris Davies Roxane Crandall Mary Pratt Ann Ruff Tami Harding Ann Bowers David Nance Dick Holley Robert Corry Lynn Grover Terry Feris John Oglvie CHORUS Cheryl Clyde Trina Lowe Ronda Schouten Janae Jones Elaine Bradford DaLyn Tolman Joyce Larsen Marianne Vane Diane Hafen Janalee Roper David Nance Wendy Bayless Pat Hooper Karrie Jensen Jerrilyn Cluff Patty Patti son Tami Harding ORCHESTRA Conductor Bryan Tobler Peggy Webb Jim Quist Charles Robertson Karen Peterson Mark Carpenter Shirley Allan Ray Bartholomew Galen Chock David Ralphs Lois Jackson Scott Allred Wendy Boyer Marianne Long Gary Huntington Jim Erdmann Terry Huff Gary Tippetts Michael Carpenter David Cobbley Patrice Mathews Catherine Erickson Debbie Nyquist PRODUCTION STAFF Director E. These girls did an excellent job in two very demanding roles portraying several different emotions. Another outstanding feature of this production was the set. The props used included a working water pump, live plants, and several pieces of antique furniture which added to the total atmosphere and effect of the play. With various schedules and other activities work- ing against them, the cast pulled through to make this production another successful endeavor for the students of Springville High School. 28 CAST Annie Sullivan Helen Captain Keller Kate Keller James Keller Viney Aunt Ev A Doctor Martha Perci I la Anagnos Blind Girls Director Student Director Peggy Smith Rachael Knight Sam Francis Joy Hafen Gregg Smith AIRae Snyder Debbie Fox Bret Anderson Sandra Haines Gwen Bartholomew Stephen Nuttall Jamie Jenkins Ann Bowers E. With much the success of last year's Bare- foot in the Park this was enjoyed by all - those who saw the play and those who participated in it. Between Oscar's carefree, fun-loving attitude and Felix's cleaning and moose calls, the audience was kept in hysterics through the antics of the poker game crew and the giggling coo-coo Pigeon sisters. With Gregg Smith and Stuart Clark leading the play as the odd couple, the production was a good way to top off the year for Mr. Peterson and the drama department. Monday the school was filled with crazy hats. Cindy Tanner and Galen Chock were chosen as having the craziest of the crazy. Tuesday, or Tiesday , originality was noted especially around the necks of Lynette Cram, Brett Boyer, and Pauline Banks. Toe socks, striped socks, and plaid socks were seen all over on Wednesday. Kerry Jensen however, chose to be different and wore face socks . Happy Days was the theme on Thursday with the slicked back hair, bobby sox, and saddle oxfords. Alan Larsen and Catherine Erickson were chosen as being best dressed that day. Springvilie's Hi's performed Sixteen Candles and Ain't That a Shame for the students during both lunch hours. Friday's assembly, with everyone in red and blue, tied up the week and the winners of the hall and snow sculpturing contests were announced. The sen- iors were awarded the prize for the largest snow sculpture and the DECA club for the most original club snow sculpture. The junior class received the prize for the most creative snow sculpture and for the best decorated hall. 'A True happiness Consists not in the multitude of friends, But in the worth and choice. Ben Jonson YEARBOOK STAFF Battling deadlines, looking for new and exciting layouts, racking brains for captions at 2:00 in the morn- ing, laughing, fuming, and crying together all means being members of a yearbook staff. With virtually no one with any previous experience, this year's staff walked into our tiny room at the beginning of the year thinking, this will be a riot! Little did we know that the term riot would be more literal than we expected!! No one knows what a job this really is until one has experienced it. Inspite of all the ups and downs, the book is finally here and we did it! 36 Scott Allan Jackie Holmes Wendy Boyer Ann Bowers David Cobbley Grant Skabelund Don Fletcher Stuart Clark Jay Mason Eli Tippetts Margaret Pehrson Editor Layout Editor Copy Editor Business Editor Photography Editor Sports Writer Photographer Photographer Ads Advisor Advisor RIGHT: Business Editor-Ann Bowers SENTINEL STAFF Last year's SHS Times became this years' Sentinel . Far more than merely the name was changed. With Bart Duncan as editor and a hard working staff, the newspaper suddenly was seen in students' hands more than in places where it was less likely to be read. The format was altered to include more pictures with better quality, more club coverage, and feature articles which captivated interest. Sports coverage was Grant Skabelund's job and he could be seen at every game busy with statistics, making sure that that which was printed was pure, unadulterated fact. Working as a team, this year's newspaper staff made the Sentinel a point of pride for Springville High. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY For the first time in the history of Springville Senior High School, juniors and seniors were given the opportunity to become members of the National Honor Society. The basis of selection for this group is in four basic categories - (1) scholarship, (2) service to the school and community, (3) leader- ship, and (4) character. These qualifications are based on nation-wide standards and any person who becomes a member has a life- long membership. This group is widely recognized throughout the United States. Because of the newness of the group, it has not yet been determined exactly what the activities of the club will be. The students and advisors-Mr. Bartlett, Miss Amott, Mr. Bird, Mrs. Larsen, and Mrs. Kauffman-will have to decide on that. It is left up to the indi- vidual schools as to how active the club will be. It is hoped that the members will find ways to be of service to the school and im- prove themselves through association. FRONT ROW: Scott Phillips, Bret Boyer, Doug Baxter. This service club, under the direction of Mr. Wilson, helped SHS by taking tickets at all of the sporting events. They also showed their concern for the members of the community by spending long hours working on the baseball diamond at Kelly's Grove. With leaders Steven T. Sumsion, presi- dent; Kevin Hiatt, vice-president; and Karl Mortensen, secretary-treasurer, the club carried on in Key Club tradition and had a truly great year. Officers: Kevin Hiatt, Steve T. SAFETY COUNCIL The Officers of the Safety Council are chosen by the student council, and they in turn select the other members. Recreational and motor safety were discussed in the Safety Convention that Mark, Kim, and Valene attended in Salt Lake City at the beginning of the year. At this convention they received pamphlets concerning safety, which they placed in the library for student use. This year in SHS, many of the members were young and inexperienced but they developed through the new experiences which they were involved with. At the state contest last spring, our members represented the school admirably well. The Soils team took first place, Livestock team achieved a second place ranking, and the Meats team placed third on a state-wide basis. Other contests which the club was involved with included the Snow College Field Day and the Golden Spike Contest. Blaine Hales received the award as second high individual at Snow College while other members competed in livestock, soil, and dairy judging. The club came out in second place in livestock at the Golden Spike Contest. Besides being involved in the activities of the club, the members also supported SHS and the community in several functions. As in previous years, they took charge of the concession stand at the football games and in December participated in Sub for Santa . During spirit week, FFA formed a tractor in the snow showing their pride in the activities of the school. Those students who enjoy association with other students in a common intrest have a riot in this club. This year they enjoyed each other's company on several trips including trips to Park West, Alta, and night skiing at Sundance. The ski club is one of the largest organizations in the school and they had a lot of fun together. Ad- visors Miss Spjut and Miss McPolin joined in this fun. The club also sponsored a victory dance and members were active in other happenings at the high school. ■ v FRONT ROW: Karen DeRose, Joy Giacomo, Lori Crandall; BACK ROW: Craig Crandall, Tom Thorn, Bret Anderson, Steve R. Consisting of 14 senior men, the SUMO club has worked this year to build school spirit and donate service to SHS. Projects such as the radio station in the lunch room and the SUMO Sneaker are examples of the organization's exhuberance and loyalty to SHS. This club has had a fantastic opening year and is the beginning of a great new tradition at SHS. friends Twenty elementary and middle school children were befriended this year by the students in Springville High's Friends Club. Heading this group were: Paul Brown, president: Bill Hudson, vice-president; Chris Frazier, Historian; Marianne Vane, activities director; David Friel, screenina director; Debbie Bates and Debbie Fox, out-reach directors. In this year's fund raising competition, SHS's Friends Club sold more calanders than any other club in the district at Christmas time. ' 60 CHEERLEADERS AND FLAGTWIRLERS The 15-lb cheerleaders started a busy year by attending a cheerleading campin Logan during the summer. Showing the spirit that SHS maintains, they came home winning thirteen superior ribbons and one ex- cellent. Flagtwirlers, varsity and J .V. cheerleaders all contributed great amounts of time and enthusiasm to stimulate spirit at Springville Senior. They were the ones who remained out in the rain at state football and kept yelling at games that others felt were hopeless. These groups collectively and seperately contributed greatly to Springville High School and the community this year. Under the direction of Mr. Karl Barton, the ACappella choirs performed at the Salt Lake lighting ceremony at temple square during the Christmas season. They held several concerts for the community, participated in region com- petition, and performed at several sacrament meetings. Members of the choirs also aided in the production of Finnian's Rainbow . Arizona was the big word this year, as the Madrigals, Hi's, junior and senior ACappela's all performed there in the spring. Playing at every home football and basketball game gave Spring- ville High one more source of pride. Their enthusiasm rang through the air as they helped the cheerleaders through their music and often through just plain yelling. They also provided half time entertainment at football games and marched in the Art City Days parade. LEFT TO RIGHT: Ed Giles, Gary Tippetts, Gary Miner, Karl Mortensen, Patrice Mathews. STAGE BAND The better musicians of Springville High enjoyed expanding their talents through playing more popular and demanding music under the direction of Bryan Tobler. They received their rewards from the appreciation of audiences in various places throughout Utah and Idaho. They also served as a back-up band for the His and Guys and plan to accompany them to California this summer. • Mick Garofolo, David Cobbley, Jim Erdmann, Terry Huff, Gary Tippetts, Richard Snelson, Hal Robbire. Good sportsmanship we hail, we sing. It's always pleasant when you spot it. There's only one unhappy thing: You have to lose to prove you've got it. Richard Armour FOOTBALL Springville's fans witnessed some super football during the 1975 season. Coach Mike Jacobsen's Red Devils were underestimated at the beginning of the year, but they proved all doubters wrong, as the Big Red Machine raced to a 7-2 regular season record, placing third in Region Six, and continuing on to compete in the state AAA playoffs. Scott Phillips led the Devils at the quarterback spot. Playing along side Scott in the backfield were big Jack Elmer, who was first team all-state on defense. Light-stepping Kevin Howell, and sure-handed Jeff Osborne, John Valentine, and Gregg Smith also gathered in Phillip's aerials. Ernie Strong, Mark Fullmer, Sheldon Anderson, Eric Weight, John Manwaring, Stuart Clark, and Jack Elmer all molded into a very stingy defensive team. Lance Peterson combined with Smith, Phillips, and Osborne to form the Devil's defen- sive backfield. All in all-it was a Very Good Year ! Although they struggled to a 1-6 season, their only win coming over Uintah 39-0, they lost some close games. A late start and a small front line took its toll on the Baby Devils, but in Sophomore play, experience is the most important aspect, and this team earned theirs. Coach Roundy's fine bunch of boys coasted to the Region Six Championship and on to the Utah State AAA Tournament, where they placed fourth. Heading the squad was Craig Pickering, who was the medalist at the Region Six Tourney. Pickering, along with, Doug Baxter, Ryan Thorn, Doug Oldroyd, and Bob Casper represented Springville at the state meet. After plummeting to a 2-5 total in the first half of the year, they turned around and started their surge with a 57-54 upset over the Uintah Utes. The Red Devils then defeated four of their next five opponents as they embarked to their major goal of the season, the state tournament. Coach Elliott Jordan molded what at the beginning of the season was a run-and-gun team into a more de- liberate, take the good shot squad. The change was the reason for the Red Devils success. Led by Mark Fullmer, the small Springville club was able to out think their opponents. Seniors Wes Ruff, Gregg Smith, Ernie Strong, and Dee Gardner aided Fullmer in their quest, while juniors Doug Baxter and Scott Phillips were a super asset to the team. The Red Devils began to come around late in the season after a somewhat shakey start. WRESTLING Eric Weight capped a very successful year for the Springville High wrestling team when he rolled through his competition in the Utah State AAA Wrestling Tournament and became the 1975-76, 167-pound state champion. The muscular senior led his team mates to a fourth place finish in the tourney. The Red Devils placed four other grapplers in the state contest. Jack Elmer fought his way to the runner- up spot at 185-pounds, while Craig Wilson nabbed third place at 112-pounds. Craig's brother, 98- pound Kerry Wilson, and 145-pound Lloyd Wilson earned fourth-place in their respective weight class. Scott Zufelt (105), Duane Nielsen (119), and Dan Doty (132) also competed at state for the Red Devils. Overall, Coach Joe James' squad had a fine season. Springville posted a 6-1 mark in Region Six action, while winning 10 of 15 dual matches for the year. The Red Devils placed second in the league standings and they finished third in the region meet. A highlight of the year was the first annual Nebo Invitational, which Springville hosted. These eight people worked hard to make 1975-76 a successful school year. They took charge of Art Week, Spirit Week, Homecoming, the Christmas Assembly, and the Hello Dance just to name a few of their responsibilities. Dee Gardner as student body president was a let's get things done worker and made sure that those things were done well. Besides being involved in several other activities, Rachael Knight acted as an enthusiastic secretary. She fought for what she felt the student body wanted. Ray Bartholomew, as treasurer, attended the faculty meetings to help the teachers understand what the students' desires were. In case you didn't notice, the quality of assemblies this year was great. This is largely due to the efforts of Gwen Bartholomew who was vice-presidentofassemblies. As historian, Jill Crandall was not afraid to speak her mind and let people know what she felt the student body needed and wanted. Through the efforts of our vice-president of student coordination, Mary Lynne Wheeler, the student handbook was made up as a guide for the students of SHS. David Nance, vice-president of activities, could be seen every week putting up game schedules on the marquis. These students and Carl Nielson as their advisor deserve a big vote of thanks from both the faculty and student body. LEFT TO RIGHT: Dee Gardner, Mary Lynne Wheeler, Jill Crandall, Gwen Bartholomew, David Nance, Rachael Kniqht and Ray Bartholomew. 138 STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES This year, the student representatives worked along with the student council to give the students such things as ping-pong tables to provide recreational activity before school and during lunch, a juke box, and a fun and eventful spirit week. They did an excellent job of helping the student council know what the student body felt they needed and wanted. John Fitzgerald Kennedy ADMINISTRATION Last year and this year have been the best two years of my school experience. This is mostly due to the fact that the students have been co-operative and understanding. Mr. Bartlett Harold L. Bartlett - Principal If a person learns to work and enjoy the work he is doing, he is successful. Mr. Bartlett I enjoy meeting and interacting with students of this age group. Your high school years are the most enjoyable three years of your life and I like to be a part of it. Just seeing stu- dents doing things is pretty exciting for me. Mr. Nelson 142 Bill Nelson - Vice Principal COUNSELORS The most enjoyable part of this job is working on a face to face basis with the students. The students here are very receptive and very cooperative. I really enjoy working with my hands, but people are where it is. Mr. Thomas Ray Thomas Darlene Amott The students of Springville High have a special quality about them, in that they are not afraid to be themselves. This may cause some problems sometimes but it truly is a desireable quality. Miss Amott OFFICE STAFF This job keeps me young. As long as the students keep young ideas in my head, I feel young. Mrs. Fox The majority of the students here at Springville High are good, in spite of the public opinion that this gener- ation is basically bad. Working here, lets me see for myself that this gen- eration is actually more on the ball at a younger age than the last gener- ation. Mrs. Judd Jean Fox Noreene Wheeler Carolyn Judd 143 ENGLISH Janean McPolin Kathy Templeman o Books are windows through which the soul looks out. Henry Ward Beecher Few things are as rewarding to me as knowing that I have been instrumental in getting the right book and the right student together. Sitting on a shelf, the greatest of books does nothing but take up space. In the hands of a reader, its potential is limitless. Mrs. Pehrson The students this year, especially the seniors, have been more willing to express their true opinions on subjects. They've been more honest with themselves and others. To me, this is refreshing. Mrs. Templeman - t 144 I hope to make students examine different issues and ideas and arrive at their own conclusions. This is the only way they can gain a testimony of anything strong enough that they will stand up for it. I want to be able to provide a foundation for them to build on. Mrs. Kauffman The most important things a student can learn from English are the ability to reason, to analyze what is read, and to express that analysis in writing clearly and effectively. Mr. Tippetts Suzanne Spjut David Glendhill 145 SCIENCE My goal is to teach kids respect for their environment. -Mr. Francis I started out wanting to teach at a medical school, but it involved a substantial part of my prime time of life so I decided to teach high school. I was a high school drop- out, and I thought I might be able to provide some motivation for kids to stay in school. -Mr. Skidmore The thing that gives me the most pleasure in this job, is seeing kids find themselves and then going into a good career. It's exciting to have the kids come back to me and tell me that they really enjoyed my class and that it was fun. -Mr. Drollinger One thing that is really enjoyable is seeing a student come into class hating science and having them leave halfway excited. -Mr. Francis 14b MATHEMATICS Mathematics is a part of our language system and should improve a person's ability to communicate with others. It also develops logical thinking. -Mr. Wilson Calculators stimulate students into learning more about mathematics. Students in science can do calculations much more quickly. I estimate that in my physics class alone, th the scores have improved 15-20% because of the use of calculators. -Mr. Evans Boyd Wilson Dan Evans Being an ordinarily average human being, it would depend on the time, the place, and circumstances that you would ask me what I think of stu- dents this year in comparison to other years. On the other hand, being of sound mind and loaded with logic, I would venture to state that students come in all sizes, and shapes, mind and might, desire to learn and achieve or not. . . I believe students in the past, with what they had, did just as much with it as you students now are doing with what you have; which incidentally is a lot more. And by the way, I'd still see good in you no matter which path you choose to take through school. -Mr. Garrett Alma Garrett VOCATIONAL Most of the kids who take this class find something they can do. I wish we could accomodate everyone who needs or wants to take a class down here. The program helps them to be able to find better jobs straight out of high school because they have a skill. Mr. Brock pringville High is great and the students are the best. Mr. Billings 148 Vocational Education is important because it teaches a person the ability to perform with this hands where academic subjects don't. We learn by doing. The main purpose for being here is to provide a place where a student who is not doing so well in academics can become a success. Everybody needs to be successful in something. Mr. Phillips Mr. Brock Mr. Billings Mrs. Stevenson Mr. Olsen Mr. Phil lips I believe we should do those things that give us happiness and satisfaction. I entered the field of teaching because I love working with people. Mr. Olsen CUSTODIANS AND COOKS Springville High has a bunch of good kids. We really enjoy being able to associate with them as well as with each other. The challenge is to be able to keep one step ahead of them! FRONT ROW: Maria West, Penny Neilson, Carma Sly; BACK ROW: Onita Fackrell, Barbara Topham, Lila Averett, Bonnie Corry. 150 Stan Bird Lamar Blackham, Stan Bird. HOME ECONOMICS Elise Evans Linda Miller Carol Manwaring Boys are challenging because they take foods as a science rather than just making some- thing to eat. They achieve faster and in most cases better than girls. Bachelor Survival is one of my favorite classes because it is so different and interesting every day. Miss Miller I feel that Home Economics is the most im- portant class for any girl because it is really just what she is. Homemaking is something a girl is going to use every day of her life, whether she has a family of her own, going to college, or working. The class teaches her to be able to take care of herself so that she will always look her best. Mrs. Manwaring LLKIMI •X, I 151 SOCIAL SCIENCE Basically, I think the students this year have been really concerned about their school and have progressed a long way. The students are good and a lot of things have been accomplished through their efforts. Mr. Nielson Phil Bird Marvin Roundy This is the least boring job I've ever had. I really enjoy teaching young people. A large part of the student body this year have been more apathetic, but individually a lot of the students are more interesting and bright. Mr. Bird PHYSICAL EDUCATION When most people think of athletics, they think of winning at all costs. To me the greatest reward from athletics or P .E. is to see boys develop into men; basically, just to see them grow and develop not only physically but also to become good citizens. Coach James Coach Elliot Jordan Coach Mike Jacobsen Coach Joe James Physical Education is an important tool in the overall development of the human being not only physically but also socially and intellectually. P.E. provides the necessary outlet of recreational needs in life. The things that are learned in youth should be carried out throughout the rest of life. Miss Nyquist BUSINESS This year has been a good year for accountants and marketers. We have accomplished many worthwhile goals and projects. A highlight of marketing was the Western Regionals in Seattle, Washington Our marketers represented us well there. The accounting department had many dedi- cated students, ten of which entered Dis- trict Six contest at B.Y.U. Mr. Mason Francis Larsen If one carrot equal 100 points, why use radial tires? The Business Department helps you to make sense in the world of business. When you leave the Business Department, you have the skills to get a job. No matter what field you are interested in, a business background is your key that will open the door. Mrs. Larsen FINE ARTS The ability to know and the ability to do come in exact proportion with what a person puts into a subject. This is how artists are born. An artist has to be very sensitive and observant to enjoy the beauties of nature. Mr. Burningham Merril Carter The band program gives students a chance to become part of a group, to learn to work with other people, and share the success of that group. They also have something they can do by themselves for the rest of their lives. Mr. Tobler Peggy Webb Drama will develop a student intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. One of my main goals is to have a student leave the class with a sense of discipline. If he achieves this, he will succeed in what ever field he chooses. For this reason I feel that drama is one of the most im- portant classes a student can take during his tenure here in high school. Mr. Peterson Rodney Peterson Music provides the aesthetic approach to education. It is an artistic dis- cipline which develops the soul of an indivudial and incorporates the cognative, affective, and psychomotor aspects of learning. Mr. Barton 157 SPECIAL SERVICES Robert Leinbach Bill Salisbury ! really enjoy working around the kids here at the school. There's always something to do here-the job keeps me busy. show from the schooldays of yesterday, Richard Vincent doing today's Oscar Meyer commercial, and tomorrow's Rocket Man, Jim Rayburn, tying the various other events together. Randy Cox and Tami Harding sang the theme song Tomorrow while Bonnie Tuttle and Russell Giles were being introduced as the junior royalty for 1976. That night the Utah County Building was filled with students pretending that for one night a year they were something extra special. With tuxedos and formals their world of make-believe became reality for one brief moment. The group Honey and Soul provided the music for the dance. The evening pro- ceeded with the traditional promenade and royalty announcement. KING: Russell Giles; QUEEN: Bonnie Tuttle PREFERENCE The month of May at Springville High School brings along with it spring fever, senioritis, and excited girls waiting for the big night with the guy they each prefer the very most. This year May also brought rain-all day before the dance; which meant the dance had to be held in the cafeteria instead of the student court. Weather cleared , in time to make the court enjoyable for relaxation and the traditional promenade of the girls in the pep groups. The theme song, Never My Love was performed by Mark Fullmer, Bart Duncan, and Stuart Clark as background for the introduction of Marty Sayer, Scott Phillips, and Kevin Hatfield as most preferred in the sneak assembly. . Springville ended the year with a 4-6 record in Region Six action, while posting a 6-9 mark overall. The Red Devils largest feat was a 6-2 victory over the then undefeated Carbon Dinos near the end of the season. Kelly Hansen anchored the pitching staff, while sophomores Mike Thomp- son and Chris Mecham along with Hansen lashed the ball at the plate for Springville. TRACK A spirited group of youthful thinclads put together a respectable season for Springville High in 1976. The Red Devil track team placed second behind state champ Spanish Fork in the Region Six meet, while earning seventh place at the state competition. Eric Weight was SpringviIle's only region champion winning the high hurdle crown. Swift Scott Phillips faired the best of the 12 Red Devils who went to the state meet. Phillips placed third in the 100 while anchoring the runner-up 440 relay team of Ric Staffenburg, Jeff Osborn, and Wes Ruff. With maturation the young Red Devil squad is aiming for finer performances in the future. Springville 42? Springville 87 Springville 84?
