What the world expects of us we have yet to Find out. Just now we were seniors, at the top of the world we have lcnown and suddenly we are novices again, studying a new sort of thing which seems to have none of the rules and regulations our school life has had. l lowever we under- stand more fully that our training has not been ornamental, as we have sometimes thought, but that it will teach us how to conduct ourselves in this new life into which we are going. This year we lost someone who has signified to us all that Springside stood For. The death of Mrs. Chapman has left us and the rest of the school with the feeling that we were luclcy indeed to have been for so many years under her guidance. If we, asa graduating class, can go out and carry with us the ideals which she, by her life set forth, we will have accomplished in some measure all that she strove lor. in I N A clear, windy day in September ol the year, 1919, the good ship Dragon', could be seen plowing her way steadfastly, though it must be admitted not too surely, across a wide, blue sea, now calm, now turbulent. This voyage marked the initial trip of this now aged Flagship which has served us XA so faithfully for the past twelve years at Springside. Beside the three original members ol our present class-Anne l-lammett, Bunny Penrose, and Chrissie l-lamiltongthe crew con- sisted ol l-lebe Rich, Louise Allen and Sarah Coleman, who deserted our ranks at our First port lor other schools, lvlarjory Allison, ,lane Dunn, Ellen Newhall, and Barbara Brown who left at the same time and joined lorces with the honorable Class ol '32, and l'lelen Clegg, Rose Allen, Phyllis Dickinson, Polly Leiper, Frances lvlann, Bodine Moon, Anne Weeks, and Nona lVlartin. The fall of 'l9QO, new members Filling the vacantplacesolthe previousJune, were AmyMellor,Annel2ich,and Peg Fassitt, together with Nancy Coleman and Mary Meryweather who left us the following year. Leaving at the same time as Nancy and lVlary were l-lelen Clegg, Phyllis Dickinson, Frances Mann, Bodine Moon, Nona Martin, and Anne Weeks who also joined the class of 1939. A Again new members boarded our vessel. These were Eleanor Guckes, Anne l-lowe, Jane l-lenson, Edith Rebmann, Guerney Naile, Helen l-lowe,and Virginia Allison and Phoebe Ashbourne who bid us farewell at our next stop along with Rose Allen. Page Thirty-one Embarlcing with us on the fourth lap of our journey were Katherine Pierpoint, Christine Warren, and Eleanor l-lagar. This year marl4ed our entrance into the theatrical world as we presented the usual fourth grade Nativity Play. The next Fall three members of our fast-increasing crew-Anne Rich, Jane Henson, and Amy Mellor-left us for boarding school, and those who filled their places were Margaret l-luggins, Mary lngersoll, Deedee Jones, Nancy Knight, Jane Sharpe, Ruth Vaux, Peg Leiper, and Margaret Ball. Our presentation this year was Pan- dorafs Box, which, due to the untiring efforts of Miss Elcoclc, was a great success. Those who descended the gangplanlc at our sixth landing were Anne f-lowe, Guerney Naile, Kay Pierpoint, and Christine Warren. Ascending at the same time were Betty Allen,Phoebe Francine, Dot Mechling, Margaret Simons and Peggy Brush-the .latter leaving us at Christmas. The only other member of our crew to depart that year was Peggy Leiper who left for school in Pittsburgh. This year, under the careful guidance of Mlle. Jacques, we presented Cendrillon and in the Spring the customary May Day Exercises with Chrisie as our May Queen. ln the fall of 1925 our course changed and we entered the deeper waters of the Upper School. Charlotte Atlcins, Rebecca Ritter, and Katherine Sauter boarded the Dragon this year and our crew remained unchanged until the following fall when Lois Mellor and Marie Stoer joined us. Qur canon boomed farewell at our ninth haven to Betty Allen and Charlotte Atlcins, and those who an- swered the call of the sea were Betty Brown, Emily Dripps, Jane Foulkrod, Clara Jennings, Letitia Kent, Maxine Swind, Mary Jane Steelman and Catherine Taylor. At our tenth harbor it was necessary to have our worthy ship placed in dry-doclc owing to the unusually rough and stormy weather of the recently completed lap of our long voyage. Before setting sail once again we bid aclieux to Lois Mellor, Clara Jennings, Letitia Kent, Polly Leiper, and Edith Rebmann, and those replenishing a much diminished crew were Frances Beale, Louise Allen, Buvel Folwell, Cath Kendig, Fran Jones, Betty Mulford, Ledlie Newlin, Marion Rosengarten, Betty Steele, Kate Von Moschzislcer, and Molly Wood. The next June, at our eleventh doclcing, Betty Steele, Maxine Swind, Jane Sharpe, Marie Stoer, and Catherine Taylor forsoolc us for traveling of a more stable sort and once again our ranlcs remained the same for another leg of our Journey, Page Thirty-two Lowering our sails lor the twelfth time we said good-bye to Kate Von Moschzisleer, Marion Rosengarten, Ledlie Newlin, and Mary lngersoll, who lelt us to study abroad, and Louise Allen, Frances Beale, Buvel Folwell, Phoebe Francine, Deedee Jones, Betty Mullord, and Molly Wood. Thus we put out to sea on our last trip, with Miss Moses at the helm, and with the exception ol Ruth Vaux who left us at Christmas our crew has remained unchanged. After Commencement Exercises tomorrow we will venture on to new seas of lile for which we have been prepared by this our maiden voyage just completed, and as each of us goes her way she will ever remember the high ideals and standards set up for her byMrs. Chapman, Miss Ellis and the Faculty ol Springside. When l arrived, l lound the once frivolous Betty, gravely discus- sing the problems ol the younger generation with a harassed young matron, vvhom l recognized, vvith ditliculty, as one ol our former class- mates, lvlary Jane Steelman. The letter read: ullearfxuntlfppiez Pleasetell me what to do. ls itvvorthvvhile for me to give up my career and get married to a vvidovver, blessed with unlimited means and children? Should l brighten the last years ot this good man's lile or accept a very generous contract with a vvell-known theatrical concern? lperplexedhn Alter a good deal of discussion, we were all agreed that Nancy should sticlc to her career. While tea was being served, we turned on the radio, and on the television screen we savv the vvell-remem- bered lace of Ritter, who vvas broadcasting a program of bedtime stories and lullabies lor the little children ol the radio World, .lust at the most exciting point in the adventures ot Peter Rabbit, she was interrupted by an S. O. S. from those Page Thirty-four two intrepid navigators, Foulkrod and l-luggins, who had braved the perilous Atlantic in a row boat, and, in mid-ocean, had exhausted their supply ofsardines. The girls seemed to feel that reinforcements were in order. Later, we learned that a zeppelin had rushed to their rescue. When this heartening news reached us, we turned off the radio, with a sigh of relief. The ensuing silence was abruptly broken by Mary Jane's excited giggle. You know, she said, Junior has had a very bad cold, and l took him to Atlantic City to recuperate. You'll never guess whom l ran into down therel As we were walking along the boardwalk, we saw a sand-artist modelling Uncle Tom Watching Little Eva's Ascent to Heaven . Little Junior threw down a bright new penny and Kay Sauter looked up with a grateful smile. Cn top of this startling announcement, Betty made a soothing remark concerning the state of my hair, and suggested that l visit Peg l:assitt's hair dressing establishment, where unruly bobs were made to conform with present-day fashions. Cf course any mention of Peggy elicited inquiries concerning Bunny Penrose. l was greatly surprised to learn that she had recently graced the Springside platform, delivering a lecture entitled, Reading With a Purpose . Between lectures, she is a buyer for Leary's store for retired books. Casting about for some means of amusement, all eyes centered upon a Quija board, partially concealed in a dark corner of the room. Placing it on our knees, Betty and l asked the whereabouts of Chrissie l-lamilton. The obliging Ouija spelled out, R-u-s-s-i-af' What is she doing? was the next question. E-x-p-o-u-n-d-i-n-g t-h-e d-o-c-t-r-i-n-e o-f S-e-l-f G-o-v-e-r-n-m-e-n-t. When we recovered from this latest shock, Mary Jane was once more convulsed with .laughter. ' ln one magazine, she said when she was able to speak, l-lelen l-lowe has endorsed Squibb's Tooth Paste, Frigidaire, Nlelba Face Powder, and Three-in-Une Oil. After this, we no longer wondered how l-lelen always managed to be so well-dressed. Returning to the Ouija, we learned that Dottie lvlechling was now the owner of a flourishing ambulance service, operating to and from the Pitcairn Aviation field. Wasn't Anne l-lammett interested in aviation, too? l asked. Why, no, Betty replied, She is now teach- ing aesthetic dancing at Junior Springsidef' Pageffhirty-Five The word Junior,' recalled to Mary Jane her troubles in regard to spinach. ul-low is it, she aslced, that all the Springside girls loolc so healthy, when Junior is so pale? One reason, l believe, is that Eleanor Hagar is managing a diet lcitchen at the school, from which hearty, wholesome luncheons are served to the girls. The tide of Mary Jane's voluble approval was stemmed by a lusty peal from the doorbell. An insistant ped- ler, not too fastidiously bathed and clad, thrust aside the maid, and strode into our midst. ln a high squealcy voice she extolled the merits of her Mexican jumping-beans, which were, by now, gayly hopping about the room. She had all but tallced herself hoarse before we found our voices, for, from beneath a breath-taking pink hat, Fran Jones' hair shot forth in tongues of flame. Recognizing us as friends, she leaped upon the tea-table, and left behind her only empty plates and a few scattered jumping-beans. After a few crocodile tears had been shed for poor old Fran, the conversation turned to one in happier cir- cumstances, Cathie Kendig had been seen about town, of late, sporting a loud, new Mercedes. The insinuations flew thiclt and fast, until Mary Jane explained that Cath was the creator of the Lotta Mussel series, which had supplanted the Elsie Dinsmoren boolcs in the hearts of the girls of today. Well, girls, said Mary Jane, Here we've discussed almost all our class and l seem to be the only one married, in spite of the great expectations we all had. How about Emily? we chorused. What about Emily, retorted Mary Jane. She's been married for almost two weelcs to that young interne she always used to tallc about, we said. Wait till l get last night's paper, said Betty. The front page will tell you all. The glaring headlines immediately attracted our attentions, for there, in huge blaclc letters, we saw a familiar name which loolced oddly out of place in its blatant context: aGirl Gangster Turns Artist. Margaret Simons Wins Nobel Prize for Art While Serving Time in Sing Sings When we had recovered from the shoclc we resumed our search for the article about Emily. We finally discovered it on the Women's Page, three columns in small type, the gist of which was that the young couple's Sears-Roebuck house, which they had erected with loving hands, had toppled over in a healthy gust of wind. Betty Brown and Eleanor Guckes leave their conspiring natures to Dot Morton and Sophie Disston. Fran Jones wills her giggles to l-lelen Johnson with the advice to use them sparingly. Emily Dripps and Jane foulkrod leave their beautiful friendship to Miss Robbins and Miss Conger. And now we trust that all will be carried out as we have directed. Therefore, we appoint Carrie as executor, ofour last Will and Testament. Signed, Anne Hammett. Catherine Kendig. PROPHECY-CContinued from page 365 Emily's husband had risked his life among the wreckage in a noble and successful effort to salvage their chief treasure, the pickled appendix, which had adorned their erstwhile mantlepiece. We laughed so long and hard at this that Betty feared we would stay for dinner and was just about to make the best of it by extending a more or less cordial invitation, when Mary Jane remembered that she had to call for Junior, who was at his dancing class. She offered to give me a lift and so the session broke up, much to the relief of our hostess. Page Thirty-eight IIIGCK IIYESBII ch B. VAILEDIICTQRY ODAY, we, the Class of 'l93'l, write finis to a chapter in the BoolcofOur Life endeared to us Tall because each member of the class has had her part in malcing up the contents of its pages. We now realize how full of interest has been the malcing, and we feel a pang of regret that we have come to the last page, as we hesitate, wistfully scanning the record of our school days at Springside, we comprehend more fully our debt of gratitude to Mrs. Chapman, Miss Ellis and all the faculty for their sympathetic interest and loving guidance. This, our Senior Year has been shadowed by the death of Mrs. Chapman. l-ler high ideals and ambition for our success will ever be an inspiration to our class and to those of Springside who follow us. Remembering her hopes for us, and principles so tactfully instilled by all our teachers, let us eagerly push on to our goal with the determination that, while we persevere as students of cul- ture, we will also remember that in the Boolt of Life, what counts is not what one can do, but what one is, physically, mentally, and morally. We lcnow that perfection is a many sided jewel: may we all strive to attain as near to it as human limitations will permit.
