The dread A bomb had been exploded. I found myself, when the disaster occurred, under a shade tree in front of our yard, drinking tea, and reading the latestcopyof Fearless Fosdick who had just become a great- grandfather. When the fog swept over me, I began to feel dizzy, my head began to reel, I felt nauseated, and the last thing I could remember was that Fearless Fosdick was still shooting the Beaneaters. As if in a dream, I floated from cloud to cloud, the myriad of beautiful colors compara- ble to heaven, my feet seemed light as a feather, and I knew I was in the realm of fantastic belief. I wandered around awhile, and finally I walked over to a building. I didn't know whether to enter or not because I could hear angry voices coming from the room. I walked in to find myself in a heated courtroom; a lawyer was standing up shouting and shaking his fist. His tie was disarranged and his beautiful curly hair was all in a mess. He seemed to be losing his case. Every once in a while he would look at a small beautiful girl, who was smartly dressed, who must have been his wife. I moved closer and who should I recognize them to be, but DONNIE DENT and LAQUETA KELLEY. They certainly made a beautiful couple. I spoke to them and wandered on from cloud to cloud. I suddenly saw a hugh ranch off in the distance and about a half dozen young children who were dark, curly haired and all wore boots, jeans, and all the accessories. I walked up and spoke to them. They said their Maw was in the house. I walked in and who should I find, but MARIE HOWELL, cooking enough for half the county. She looked just as young and pretty as she did when she graduated the same night I did. Soon DALE WINDERS walked in, followed by all the children and they all dived in and started eating. They invited me to stay, but I decided I had better hurry on. I said goodbye to the Winders and walked on; I was getting pretty tired as I sat down on a rock cloud and rested. Soon I thought I heard an angry voice and the squeal of pigs. I turned around and just over the fence I saw a man with a stick, trying to drive the hogs back up to the barn. He saw me and came over to see what I was doing there. When he came closer I saw him to be JIM BURGESS, who had been president of the Senior Class. He sat down and sighed. He looked pretty tired. We talked awhile about the good old days. Then he jumped up and away he went after his pigs again. I chuckled to myself and went on my way. Next, I came to a high school. I noticed out on the football field about twenty or thirty young boys and a coach. The coach was calling each boy and telling how each play should be carried out. He turned to face me and I recog- nized DUANE BARRETT. He seemed happy at his job, so I left him and went on my way. I began to get thirsty so I stopped at a drug store to get a coke. Behind the counter, I found ROY DALE UNDERWOOD snowed under with orders of all kinds from teenagers. He looked up and smiled, then went back to his work. I looked around. I asked one of the teen- agers who owned this nice drug store and she told me a nice old man, who usually sat in the back. No one knew much about him, because he never talked. He had a wife that was twice as large as he was and he hardly breathed without getting flogged. When I went to the back I found BILLY WAYNE BARLOW sitting in a chair, figuring out his financial situations. We talked for awhile, then I heard a woman yell, Billy Wayne, get yourself in here and help me fix some supper . He jumped up and ran into the next room. I sat there awhile, then left the store and walked on. Next, I came to a small house with lots of shrubs and flowers around it. I thought it was the most quaint house I had ever seen. A little red-haired boy and girl sat playing in the yard. They asked me in and there were BETTY ANN and RAYMOND washing dishes. They seemed to be very happy together. I went back by the School house and looked in on the old school. There was MYRTA LEE RUDD teaching tfre first grade. She had married a farmer. I walked on and soon came to a woman on a cloud crying her eyes out. She looked so remorseful that I sat down beside her and found myself sitting by my old school chum, LUCY BROWN. Of course, it wasn't Brown then, because she had been married three times and had just had a fight with her third husband. She finally stopped crying and went on her way and I went on mine. I kept on going until I came to a beautiful mansion. I stood there with my mouth open and soon I saw a beautiful lady, walk with great dignity toward me. She stopped and it was LOIS CLEAVINGER. I talked awhile and finally I asked her where her husband was. She sighed and pointed, Outthere . I looked where she pointed and there was BOBBY MARTIN, play- ing golf, just by himself and running after each ball that he hit. I laughed and walked on. 1 came to a large building and found it to be an Old Maid's Home. There were two ladies standing out on the porch. I walked up to them and I recognized DOROTHY HARRIS and JOYCE ARMSTRONG. They were still looking for a husband and they hadn't lost hope after all these years. Beautiful music, played by the most famous orchestra of the time, is surpassed only by the cracked voice of DELORA WHITFORD; she is billed on the stage as Dynamic Delora. If you ever hear her sing, you'll explode. I looked on the second row and there were her five little boys and husband, beaming proudly upon their mother and wife. Next I came to a big furniture store. I walked in and sat down, because I was dog-tired. A lady came up to sell me something and who should it be but ETTA MAE ELLIS. Between her and LLOYD OSWALD they had built up a furniture store and Beauty Shoppe and were making scads of money. I walked on and came upon another large building. I saw WANDA GAYLE stamp her foot and exclaim, Of, course, I have to work in a broom factory. When Bobby and I had our tenth baby, I told him it was the last straw . Next I came to a cloud, with two brand new cars setting on it. There was RONEY SMITH sitting between the two cars trying to decide which one to drive, because in one car sat GENE WINDERS and in the other one NAOMI FANNING. The fog diminishes and I find myself floating back to earth on a silvery sheath of sun- light. Just before I reach the ground, I hear a voice say, Stop the machine, hold the press, here's a great story . And rushing through the fog, her head shaking and black ink all over her face, I saw JUANELL CRAWFORD, the only woman editor in New York. And the envy of all the other editors. I reached the earth with a jolt, and rubbing my eyes, I looked about me. It was just the same. I sat with my Fearless Fosdick magazine on the ground beside me and the empty glass overturned. I smiled to myself and settled down for a nice evening nap. Coach Barrett Wanda Gayle--Bobby E.
