Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1950 volume:

Howdy Folks ! I am Johnny Wolverine................ The following pages record my life as I lived it from the morning of my first day in Spring Lake School to the night of my graduation. It has been fun going to school with all of you, and in the years to come may my experiences call to mind your own journey along the Wolverine Trail . THE ANNUAL STAFF TOP ROW: Marie Howell, Joyce Gooch, Mrs. S. T. Newman, Leonard Stephens, Ray Joe Riley. SECOND ROW: Trellistene Harris, Patsy Miller, Loyd Ray Goodwin, Jolene Kirkpatrick. OUR MASCOT--THE WOLVERINE The Spring Lake ‘Wolverines’ were superbly honored at the first of this school year, when Mrs. S.T. Newman presented the school with a genuine 48 inch Wolverine skin, and revealed a unique story of how she acquired it. Mrs. Newman clerked this summer in Hamilton Stores, Inc., a curio shop at Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone National Park. Her greatest desire was to bring home to Spring Lake school, a beautiful wolverine skin, which was on display in the shop and priced at $60.00. One day a passing cus- tomer, Mr. L.T. Rettig, who hunts wild game in Africa, and who is manager of 'Save-A-Nickel’ Stores in Denver, Colorado, learned why Mrs. Newman was so anxious to take home with her the wolverine skin. He appraised it and immediately donated the purchase price. The curio shop sold the skin at wholesale to Mrs. Newman, so in this manner, Hamilton Stores, Inc., also actually participated in the donation to the school. Mr. and Mrs. Newman’s additional contribution was a glass case, in which the mascot fur is on display in the halls of Spring Lake High. The eighth graders vainly try to make their way down the hall and learn how hard those combinations on the lockers are to work. Some required the aid of Mr. Newman. Sept. 7 On this eventful day the seniors received their senior rings. Sept. 8 Mrs. Newman presented the wolverine skin to the school in assembly. Sept. 9 The ‘Wolverines’ decked out in pretty new uniforms to travel to Muleshoe for the first game of the season. Sept. 15 A bus got stuck in the mud today. While trying to push it out Loyd Ray seemed to sit down in a mud puddle. ‘Mud puddle Goodwin’, as he was known in those days. Sept. 20 The Sophomores enjoyed a skating party at Littlefield. On this day the girls played their first practice basketball game at Whiteface. Sept. 21 Who didn’t have his picture made? The picture trailer was here to take pictures. Sept. 26 The Seniors were victims of a mass shooting at Littlefield, picture shooting, that is. ept. 27 The Seniors celebrated with a party in the sand hills as the Freshmen enjoyed a skating party at Dimmitt. Oct. 1 The annual staff attended annual school at San Angelo. What’s this we hear about a white Mer- cury following the girls? Oct. 5 The Seniors are running around with old magazines and paste, trying to get their Romeo and Juliet scrap books in on time. Oct. 10 Six Weeks tests are staring us in the face this week. Wonder how many football players will be eligible to play after this week is over because they didn't make the grade? Oct. 11 Rainbow girls presented the play ‘Three Bright Girls’. We saw the play, but we never could find the three bright girls. Where were they? Oct. 12 Delora actually made 98 on geometry six weeks test! Catch Mr. Knox before he faints. Oct. 15 The Senior hot dog stand opens with a bang! More Seniors found sick Saturday night than ever before. Oct. 18 F.F.A. initiation for the Freshmen green hands begins as nightmares become true. Oct. 19 The Royal Court of F.H.A. elected Donnie Dent as Prince Charming, and the Royal Court of F.F.A. elected Bonnie Clayton as Sweetheart. Oct. 20 It seems as if the pictures of the annual came in today. Some of you kids better keep those pictures under cover, because they look too much like some of those wanted for murder posters. Oct. 22 Hot Dogs! Hot Dogs! Come and get your hot dogs at the old Senior hot dogs stand. Why is it you are trying to learn to speak Spanish, Rowena; is it because you are selling rummage? Oct. 24 The spooks were guests to the Junior Class at Laqueta’s house. More fun, more people killed??? Oct. 25 Twelve girls emerge as candidates for the carnival queen and the hotly contested race gets unde rway. Oct. 27 The Juniors and Seniors almost pull hair to get their queen elected. Nov. 1 Seniors wash windows at Earth and Spring Lake, as part of the things they did to make money to put Betty Haberer in as carnival queen. Nov. 8 The Sophomores enjoyed a party at the sand hills. Nov. 10 F.H.A. had a formal initiation at the school house for the Freshmen girls. Nov. 15 Better buy an annual! Senior annual drive just opened. Think of the poor kids that didn’t pay their deposit. Nov. 17 Seniors had an assembly program including, T never see Maggie Alone’. We also had some crying from Margaret because she hadn’t paid her annual deposit. Nov. 18 Turkey, turkey, turkey; who wants to buy a chance on a turkey? Just see any Junior. Nov. 21 Those horrible six weeks tests are upon us again. Nov. 23 It seems that on this day the school rejoiced because vacation for Thanksgiving began. Nov. 30 The first 36 pages of the annual were sent in. Dec. 2 Lots of guys and gals were seen going to the football banquet at the Community building. Dec. 8 The Junior class put on a very enlightening assembly program of the latest fashions in this country. Those boys looked cute in those bathing suits. Dec. 16 The Freshman class had their Christmas party. Dec. 22 Teachers grit their teeth, and boldly try to hold out the rest of the day as students cut last minute capers before vacation begins. Jan. 2 Class resumes after Christmas holidays; at least, they try to resume. Jan. 10, 11 Mid-term test....It speaks for itself. Jan. 12 Seniors have a farewell party for Bill McClement. Jan. 28 It seems that if you go to Muleshoe on Saturday night, you willfindall of Earth over there. How about it, Clifford? Jan. 30 Jr. basketball team played ball at Littlefield. The Freshman class gave a very interesting assembly program in the impersonation of the Senior class. Feb. 1 It seems that Bobby Free has started out the month of February the right way. He made 100 on a geometry test. How come Bobby? Have you started studying? Feb. 3 The boys and girls played basketball at Olton. Feb. 8-10 County Tournament at Amherst with the girls the winners of the County. Ima Jean, what are you going to do with all those gold basketballs? Feb. 14 ‘Will you be my valentine? ' was asked several times this day. When Jolene asked Loyd Ray, he bashfully accepted. Feb. 15 The school enjoyed a picture show, ‘Kentucky . Feb. 16 How much did those little kids learn the day you taught, Clifford? Feb. 25 The girls played Sudan for the third place in the district tournament. We came out on the top end of the score. March 15 The Senior class enjoyed a banquet at the community building, given by the W.M.U. of the Earth Baptist church. Last pages of the annual were sent to the press. March 16 ‘He is raising high his hatchet! Look! The swift downward stroke! Hear her moan, her wail, her hideous shriek----!’ These lines are from the Senior play, spookiest thing we have seen around Spring Lake in a long time.
