A long, glass, factory-like box stood - stark, and empty, and waiting. The Axeman frowned his disapproval and swtmg the mighty axe. Magically, a gracious front wing was add- ed, and a grand south wing joined a magnificent new SYU1- , nal., ,. 1 K ' . -fgisfsplffsgil s - '-swffzfflzq f--..,. ,MM . . a it all began with an axe - and a proud young Lumberjack - longing to grow and to create. So the axe flew and the chips flew - and the chips supplied the means to build a school on top of a hill near a spring, The Lum- berjack planted green grass and covered the hall with ivy and caused the redbuds to grow, and then, because he knew that buildings alone do not make schools, he breathed into it a spirit df greatness, so that those who CDICISG its portals might know forever the ties that make a great tradition. But the years passed quickly and growth demanded - again the axe flew, the chips flew, the chips turned to money and new buildings sprang up to meet the need of the time. Tradition was great! l He smiled now, and rested, pleased But the axe was poised, and when prog- ress again called out, the old Axeman rose to meet the challenge. with his handiwork - and pleased, too, that the tradition, born of the past, had only grown in the transition. Q -sf ww 'W 'W...ss-e ' ' . av TRADITION.. T. .iw Black and gold dominated the new north and south wings, which completed the rectangle - a sym- bol of strength and security and solidarity. Back across the way the tradi- tion-haunted hall gave way to prog ress and crumbled. No longer was ' 4- Ai lg... Instead a modern steel and brick mon- ster stood, shining and imposing, trying to assume the air of a hall of learning. The Lumberjack sighed and the heart within him was heavy, but he knew that sen- - timent cannot impede WA' progress and that, in time, this new miracle would become a vital part of the plan of the future. the ivy and the tall, imposing facade and the sweet bloom of spring redbuds visible to the sad old Wood- chopper and to the passers-by who were bound by the love and tradition of school days. , swap - 3 - , .. . sv- - s M, v ' 'a '?'v. The grand old Spirit, wiser and stronger than ever, is resting again today - bu not idly because he jealously watches over his school. He is watching you and you and YOU and because he has given his best he expects your best in return for the years you will fondly recall My school days in the Land of the Lumberjack.
