Newsome For a colorful poster, an imaginative display or an unusual illustration, the man to see is Mr. Ronald Newsome. As chairman of the graphic arts department, Mr. Newsome is noted for his talent in all phases of commercial art, as well as his earn- est willingness to cooperate with both students and faculty on any school project. His extensive back- ground in the field of art includes a previous asso- ciation with the United States Rubber Co., the Dia- mond Match Co., free-lance magazine illustration and owning his own advertising business. Mr. New- some has been an active member of the Advertising Club of Springfield, the Printing House Craftsinen and served as vice-president of the Springfield Artists Guild. We salute Mr. Newsome and we are proud to honor him as a member of the Trade High School faculty. Herman E. Drewes Mr. Herman Drewes, a man who has devoted many years to the teaching of mathematics at Trade High School, as well as professional service to the community of Springfield, is retiring this year. Mr. Drewes career has included teaching at Van Sickle Junior High School, the Springfield Evening School and conducting defense classes during World War Il. He has been involved in many community ac- tivities such as the Lions’ Club, the Masons, the Mel- ha Shrine Band and the Springfield Teachers’ Credit Union, where he served as president for a number of years. We extend our thanks to Mr. Drewes for his many years of valuable service and we wish him a long and satisfying retirement on Cape Cod. IN MEMORIUM DENNIS J. BRUNTON Two years ago, Trade High School mourned the death of its assistant principal, Dennis J. Brunton He was an exceptonal man, dedicated to his work. He was born in Springfield and remained here all his life. He entered the army to render his serv- ices in World War |. He became a teacher here, at Springfield Trade High School in 1924. After twen- ty-six years of teaching, he was elected assistant principal of the school which also gave him the responsibility of principal and director of Springfield Evening Adult Trade School. He was marshal for many parades and is held responsible for the placement of flags on the graves of deceased veterans. Mr. Brunton spent most of his life doing things for other people. He won recognition for his out- standing service in education and community service. He did much to improve our school, and neither this man nor his works will ever be forgotten. A trophy in his memory is hereby presented to the school. It is engraved as follows: ‘‘In memory of Dennis J. Brunton from the Class of 1967. 12-76 Louise Therrien WILLIAM HILL In the short period during which Billy Hill was a member of our class he made a noteworthy con- tribution to this group. We know that the influence of this young man upon medical science and the people of this area has been due to the work of God, and represents His way of using the greatest of tragedies for the most gocd. As much as we wanted Billy to live, God felt he had suffered greatly and that he had accomplished enough in his short time to be called to a place of peace and rest. Let us not forget the example Billy held for us: the will to live. When you feel that God has left you, try and display the spirit that Billy had and you will find strength. May we all have this faith to endure our des- tiny. IN MEMORIUM Private Calvin R. Wilson, nineteen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold R. Socha As we the Class of 1967 of Springfield Trade High School, come to the end of our high school days, we suddenly realize that the administration and teachers of our school deserve our sincere thanks for their diligent efforts. We would not be able to go into the world of to- day without the specialized skills and knowledge we have developed for success. We especially appreciate the help of our class advisors, Mrs. Kramer, Miss Murphy, Mr. Howes, Mr. Hutcheons, Mr. Gulluni and the many others who have assisted and guided us throughout our years at Springfield Trade High School. Now is the time when we really appreciate our parents. It was their encouragement and assistance which helped us through our high school days. Without their love and patience it would have been impossible to have obtained the knowledge and skills we now possess. The time has come for us to correlate our knowledge and abilities which enable us to con- front the serious problems of today. In this time of crisis, we must be ready to face life with an intelligent outlook and with a patriotic spirit. Our leadership will help determine the future state of our country and will contribute to the governing of our modern day world. With these ideas clearly in mind, we resolve to go forth into the world of work, deter- mined to reflect credit upon our parents, Trade High School and ourselves. NANCY M. Three years we have worked hard; Hours of study now are past. Through soon we'll be leaving, Friendships true we know will last. Which years did we find the best? 6 LAS S SO N G Which one held the. most success? This last day together We must say to all our friends Good bye - Good luck forever We pray our friendship never ends. Now farewell To Trade High “ Sixty - seven.” By Gloria Houle BIRTH IS ONLY THE BEGINNING! Life is many things. It is a blessing of faith, A gift of knowledge, A warmness of love. Forget not, throughout life, the ashes To which a human body turns. This is a reality, forsaken by The eyes of many. We may often wonder if the sun still shines, And the rivers still flow, ee CLASS POEM We, as students, appreciate the feeling Of achievement that accompanies Our ever-growing knowledge. This is a flame that will Burn endlessly in a changing world. All nations, All people, All goodness, Run in harmony with this feeling. Thomas E. Although everything seemed confusing at first, our teachers guided us skillfully toward an acceptance of our new enviroment. 1964 - 1965 During the first week in October, 1964, we enjoyed an orientation assembly which presented the many sports and activities sponsored for the benefit and participation of the students at Trade. At this assembly, Mr. Garvey, our principal, formally welcomed us to the school, The Trade High School Student Council sponsored a get- acquainted dance for new students, at which time we got to know our classmates a little better. On May 13, 1965, the student body was grieved to hear the sad news of the sudden death of Dennis J. Brunton, our assistant principal. Although we had known Mr. Brunton only briefly, he was to us the symbol of a great human being. Our first class elections were held during the latter part of May. The candidates campaigned vigorously. At an assembly prior to voting day, each candidate for a junior class office had the opportunity to convince his fellow students that he was the best suited for the particular office for which he 3s running. The students elected to serve the class were: Donald Socha, president; Mark Drugan, vice-president; Marguerite Rivard, secretary; William Clark, treasurer; Elizabeth Duffy, girl marshal; and Kenneth Theriault, boy marshal. 1965 - 1966 Mr. Gulluni and Mrs. Kramer became our new class ad- visors. Class officers held regular meetings each Tuesday in Room 207, Field Day, an annual event at Trade High, was held lute in September. With the spirit of victory in our hearts, we ap- proached the field of battle. We struggled through the many events and gained a surprising measure of success against the seniors. Under the direction of Nelson Company and our class ad- visors, a new class ring was designed. This is an accomplish- ment in which the Class of 1967 takes great pride. To earn money for the class treasury, a movie was scheduled for January, 1966. The Misadventures of Merlin Jones was thoroughly enjoyed by an audience of nine hund- red, On March 28, 1966, the students and faculty at Trade High School felt sorrow once more when one of our class members, Billy Hill died after a long serious illness. Billy had prized dearly a class ring which had been given to him by his class- mates. Plans for a junior prom were discussed, but unfortunately this goal was not realized. In May senior hats were distributed. We now realized that we would soon be the student leaders of the undergraduates at Trade. The day into which had gone many hours of hard work finally arrived. On May 31st, the juniors gathered at High Meadow in Granby, Connecticut for a picnic. What a great time everyone had! How could we miss .. baseball, volleyball, HISTORY horseback riding, badminton .. and all the food we could ec Once again came the time for class elections. The stude were aware of their responsibility to elect candidates w would represent them with pride and dignity. Those elected lead the class of 1967 were: Donald Socha, president, Ma Giera, vice-president; Marguerite Rivard, secretary; Willia Clark, treasurer; Venise Gagon, girl marshal; and Rona Wilkinson, boy marshal. Sandra Russell and Charles Baerme were elected student editors of the 1967 yearbook. 1966 - 1967 As Mrs. Kramer was teaching elsewhere, Miss Murphy we appointed as senior advisor in September, 1966 to replace he Mr. Gulluni continued his guidance of our interests in meeti with us early in the year. We were eager to start right in a establish our position of leadership. Again, the first importa fall event was the annual field day. This year, as stalwe seniors, benefitting from our last year's experience, the Clo of 1967 proved to be the winner in the day's events, eve though the juniors made a fine showing for their class. Lilies of the Field, a movie presented by the senior cla provided excellent entertainment for the student body and, the same time, contributed handsomely to our treasury. An ambitious project in which the entire senior clo participated was the candy sale. The proceeds from this sa helped to pay for many of the activities sponsored by t senior class. The Senior Class Luncheon was held in the school tea roo, in March, 1967. The students enjoyed the delicious food pry pared by their classmates and other members of the foods an catering department. Time passed quckly. There was a rush by the members prepare the date for the yearbook. Caps and gowns we ordered, Before we knew it, April was upon us. It was time to ma the final preparations for that long awaited day — the Seni Class Banquet and Prom. It was held at Shaker Farms in Wee field on the night of April 27, 1967. theme of the prom, “Thré Coins in a Fountain, was illustrated exquisitely by a spary ling fountain and Roman pillars. The decorations made th night even more exciting. The food was delicious; the mug memorable. This occasion was the highlight of our three yea) at Trade. A week after the prom, the seniors were whisked off High Meadow a for fun-filled picnic. Class Day came too soon. On May 12th, clad in our ca and gowns, we marched down the center aisle of of auditorium. The Trade High School Shield, symbol of our ri sponsible leadership as seniors, was handed down to t junior class, whose members will now take our places. Of hearts were happy, but our eyes filled with tears as walked proudly out of our auditorium for the last time. Commencement exercises were s. :eduled for June 19, 196m in Springfield Municipal Auditorium. Our parents, relativé and friends watched with great pride as we received o | diplomas — the ultimate goal of our high school career. These memorable events which have occured during o three years at Trade High School will never be forgotten a will always be held close to our hearts.
