‘A Tribute to a Devoted Educator ” Mr. Frank Vyska Just prior to the turn of the century, Williams Street, Westfield, Mass., consisted of open farm land, where only four family resided. One of these, a Bohemian family by the name of Vyska, was proudly announcing the arrival of a new born son, naming him Frank. It was in the Westfield community that Mr. Vyska spent his boyhood and was educated as a student in Westfield School System. With the rolling of drums, the roaring of cannons and blasting of bullets, World War I beckoned this young man into the service of his country. After World War I, he returned and furthered his education. He graduated from Wentworth Institute in 1922 with a B. S. in Science. He advanced his educa- tion by taking courses at A. I. C. and Springfield College. On June 19, 1924 he took Miss Florence Louise Parmenter as his bride. They have one child, a married son Richard, and are now the proud grand- parents of two children. Before entering the field of education, Frank worked for industry in and around Westfield and Springfield for such firms as Foster Machine Com- pany, Westfield, Springfield Armory, and finally, for sixteen years, the American Bosch Corporation where he served as an engineer. The Trade Evening School enjoyed the services of Mr. Vyska as early as 1938 as did special defense classes before World War II. On March 17, 1947, the Springfield Public School System recongnized the talents of this gifted man and hired him as a regular teacher. He has served in numerous capacities and is cur- rently chairman of the Science Department here at Trade. He is a member of Science Curriculum Com- mittee for Secondary Schools as well as a member of Mr. Garvey’s Advisory Committee. He is a firm be- liever in visual aides as a teaching tool. ‘“‘One picture is worth a thousands words,”’ is his favorite saying. It is not unusual to walk past his room to see it darkened, lit only by the reflections of an overhead or movie projector. Mr. Vyska will long be remembered by all those who have been members of his classes and fellow teachers To Frank - you have made many friends while here at Trade and together we pay tribute and wish you and Mrs. Vyska a long richly rewarding retirement.
