Thompson, our gracious, dyna- mic principal of the Girl’s Di vision. Under her energetic and dedicated leadership, the young women of the Trade High School and Springfield Technical Institute have at- tained new goals and heights of achievement. Years of varied experiences have contributed to the ef- ficiency with which Mrs. Thompson carries out her vari- ed duties. Well schooled in office and business procedures, and having taught at various secondary and adult levels in guidance counselling and job placement, she is well qualified as administrator in these fields. She has served her community unselfishly through the many professional organizations of which she is a member. Mrs. Thompson is in frequent demand as a resource person and speaker for various local, state and national programs dealing with contemporary educational problems. Her ever-ready smile, her gracious accessibility to faculty and students, and her boundless vitality and tireless energy endear her to all her associates. With her perception and alertness to the vital needs of our changing world, Mrs. Thompson has been instrumen- tal in developing an outstanding curriculm which offers unusual job training to girls especially in the paramedi- cal fields. These courses have received commendation on both a state and national level. Efficient in all she under- takes, loyal to her profession, and devoted to her family, community and church, she has earned the respect and admiration of those with whom she comes in contact. To be associated with her is to share her excitement, pride and joy at having a part in the vocational and tech- nological challenges that characterize the educational op- portunities offered at Trade High School and Technical Institute. Mrs. Thompson came to Trade High School in 1941 as Guidance Counselor with Mrs. Ells, She was appointed Assistant Principal of the Girls’ Division in November, 1957, PR pore CR 8 GE EEA AA ELIE EA DERE BARE AER MMRDA ERLE A ALE I eb PEC NS AAR SERRE RE to tia eee = Class History In September 1963, we, the Class of 1966, entered Spring- field Trade High School for our first day. It was both a confusing and exciting one. We met new friends and teach- ers who would’ be part of our lives at Trade High during the next three years. 1963 - 1964 Our first few weeks at Trade were an adjustment period for us. Soon, we all began to feel a part of Trade life, participating in the many clubs and activities offered to us and planning ahead for our future. Toward the end of the year, our class advisors, held a class meeting, at which time we elected our Junior Class Officers. They were: President Richie Leiper Vice-President Lina DiCicco Secretary Susan Slicer Treasurer Nancy Robak In June, our first year ended, and we took a long await- ed rest. 1964-1965 We were eager to return to school in September. Junior Class meetings were held often, with the Officers and Representatives attending. Plans for a dance and picnic were discussed, but unforunately these goals were not realized. Still, we were determined. In October, the Junior-Senior field day was held. Al- though the Juniors had high hopes of overtaking the Sen- iors, we were defeated. Nevertheless, everyone had a good time In January, we took the first step in becoming seniors; we ordered our Seniors Hats ‘‘66’’. When ‘they arrived, we took pride in wearing them to show who we were. To improve our treasury, the Juniors sponsored a movie for all students. It was titled ‘‘Honeymoon Holiday’’, and it was very successful event. May 13, 1965, was a very sad day at Trade High. Mr. D. Brunton, a devoted school official, passed away at his testimonial dinner. He was well known by everyone both in and o ut of school. May 14, 1965, was the Senior Class Day assembly. That day, when the sheild was handed down, our Junior year was past, and we became the new Senior Class. Our Class Officers for our Seniors year were: President Arnold Millete Vice-President Realer Foster Secretary Daisy Strom Treasurer Letha Picanzo The few days of May and June passed quickly and school was over for another year. 1965-1966 September, 1965 was the beginning of our last year at Trade. We were anxious to start right in and show that we were the Seniors. Our first big event was the Junior-Senior Class field day. This time the tables were turned, and we were determined to win this year. Seniors must prevail, but alas, all was not as wished. We were defeated by the Juniors, but we walked bravely off the field with the winning spirit still in our hearts. Officers, Representatives, and Advisors met regularly during the year. Being older, wiser, and more organized, plans for a semi-formal dance were made. It was held on February 12, a Saturday night, at the Trade High gym. It was our first big get-together dance, and everyone had a good time. The traditional Senior Class Luncheon was held in the tearoom Februar y 16 and March 10. A great number of students enyoyed the delicious food, prepared by our own classmates. The time was rapidly passing. There was a rush for students to fill out the class ballots and will. We decided we needed more money in the treasury for our Senior Prom was near. A film was suggested, and on March 4, ‘“‘Gidget goes to Rome’”’ was presented to all students. In March, caps and gowns had to be ordered for gradu- ation. April was the month of our long awaited formal Prom and Banquet. It was held on Thursday, April 28, 1966, at Shaker Farms Country Club in Westfield. The ballroom was beautifully decorated, the food was delicious, and the music memorable. That night was the high-light of all our years in high school. May came too soon. All Seniors took part in the Senior Class Day exercises on May 13. We marched down the auditorium aisle, knowing this was the last assembly for us at Trade High. The school shield was passed on to the Junior class and the ivy planted. After the assembly, Sen- iors had the rest of the day to do as they wished. Graduation was held June 16, 1966, at the Springfield Municipal Auditorium. Our hearts were filled with mixed emotions as we walked up the aisle to receive our diplomas. This was the last time we would be together and even though well-deserved jobs awaited us, we could never for- get all the fun-filled memories Trade High had given us. Letha Picanzo Treasurer Class Poem The massive ivy-covered school, our dear Trade never from our hearts and our minds will fade The teachers here, we have grown to admire their influence and training was one to inspire We remember the dances, sports, games, and fun The students, the teachers can compare with no-one The familiar halls, we once did walk with school chums and friends who stopped to talk But now farewell, our three years depart but memories will linger deep in our heart Farewell to good friends that we once met farewell to the dear school we will never forget. by Helen Jakus GIRL Diane De Carlo Linda Varto Rosemary Roncolato Kathy Morin Angela Barrows Realer Foster Anglea Barrows Barbara Perry Diane De Carlo Helen Jakus Ruth Kruziuktz Ruth Ryan Dusty Springfield Linda Di Cicco Eleanor Shibley Diane De Carlo Trade Realer Foster Diane Barry Linda Vasso Ann Chulli Ruth Kruziwitz Virginia Massi Sheila Morse Lorraine Beldon Margarette Hurlly Burger Chef Kathy Morin Realer Foster Realer Foster Barbara Perry Mrs. Sullivan Class Ballot MOST POPULAR BEST LOOKING BEST DRESSED MOST AMBITIOUS MOST STUDIOUS MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED SMARTEST MOST CHEERFUL CLASS FLIRT MOST BASHFUL BEST NATURED CLASS ATHLETE FAVORITE SINGER CLASS SPEAKER MOST TALKATIVE CLASS DANCER FAVORITE BAND FAVORITE ACTOR FAVORITE ACTRESS FAVORITE T. One of these, a Bohemian family by the name of Vyska, was proudly announcing the arrival of a new born son, naming him Frank. It was in the Westfield community that Mr. Vyska spent his boyhood and was educated as a student in Westfield School System. With the rolling of drums, the roaring of cannons and blasting of bullets, World War I beckoned this young man into the service of his country. After World War I, he returned and furthered his education. He graduated from Wentworth Institute in 1922 with a B. S. in Science. He advanced his educa- tion by taking courses at A. I. C. and Springfield College. On June 19, 1924 he took Miss Florence Louise Parmenter as his bride. They have one child, a married son Richard, and are now the proud grand- parents of two children. Before entering the field of education, Frank worked for industry in and around Westfield and Springfield for such firms as Foster Machine Com- pany, Westfield, Springfield Armory, and finally, for sixteen years, the American Bosch Corporation where he served as an engineer. The Trade Evening School enjoyed the services of Mr. Vyska as early as 1938 as did special defense classes before World War II. On March 17, 1947, the Springfield Public School System recongnized the talents of this gifted man and hired him as a regular teacher. He has served in numerous capacities and is cur- rently chairman of the Science Department here at Trade. He is a member of Science Curriculum Com- mittee for Secondary Schools as well as a member of Mr. Garvey’s Advisory Committee. He is a firm be- liever in visual aides as a teaching tool. ‘“‘One picture is worth a thousands words,”’ is his favorite saying. It is not unusual to walk past his room to see it darkened, lit only by the reflections of an overhead or movie projector. Mr. Vyska will long be remembered by all those who have been members of his classes and fellow teachers To Frank - you have made many friends while here at Trade and together we pay tribute and wish you and Mrs. Vyska a long richly rewarding retirement. on trat adm 10 Mr. Walter Markham Director Massachusetts Vocational Education Mr. John Shea Assistant Director Massachusetts Vocational Education Dr. T. We are grateful for their prodding us into taking advantage of the many opportunities offered to us. We certainly cannot forget our Advisors, Mr. Salvadore and Dr. Walter. They have stood by us through the good and the difficult times and have worked hard to help us achieve our goals. Our parents are to be recognized also, for without their love, patience and encour- agement, we would not have been able to get the education we needed. As we look back on the happy and unforgetable years at Trade High, we realize how much we are going to miss the friends we have made, the faculty who have helped us, and the School and activities we have supported and attended. A part of our hearts and minds will be in debt to Trade for providing the training and op- portunities we have obtained, and we know that with a small amount of luck and God’s assistance we shall be sucessful and our accomplishments well noted. The many hours which were spent in pain and suffering would certainly be beyond most our imaginations. One is always led to ask why so much pain must exist in such a short span of life. Or why a person with such a short span of life in their youth must die. All one can do is to throw up his hands in dispair and say we just do not know. The ways and powers of God are often beyond our human understand- ing. But all one might humanly say is that this was a life that came to a tragic end. But this does not mean that the short life of Billy was without purpose or accomplishment. The life of Bill Hill will be remem- bered not only by his family and friends in thier sorrow but by the whole community in both Springfield and Boston. In his short time this boy and his struggle to live has probably effected the lives of more people than any of us could ever dream. When I or anyone else would enter the hospital and ask for Bill Hill, that name in itself brought an admirable response from doctors, nurses and patients alike. This was the boy whose hope and faith made the med- ical profession worthwhile. This was the boy who stimulated medical science to heights beyond human imagination. When we mentioned Bill Hill to the people of New England, a re- sponse of charity and concern came forth that few dreamed possible. There was not a person who could help but have his heart warmed and his charity touched by the boy whose will to live had been an example and inspiration to all. For the average person of our area, Billy became a per- son about whom they were concerned because he was a person in need. Consequently people joined together to give their blood, money and pray- ers to a fellow human in need in a way that will be remembered for a long time. To a man or woman of a relgious faith, Billy Hill has served as a source of confidence in the power and presence of God at work in the individual through prayer and faith. The best doctors in the world admitt- ed that their skills could never have been as successful as they were had this boy’s faith and desire to live not kept him going. For those of us who were praying constantly, it has been frustrating, but never hopeless or without its rewards. We know that as much as all of the doctors and nurses and others wanted him to live, to do so was beyond human expectation. We know that the influence of this boy upon medical science, the citizens of this area, and the people of faith has been the work of God and represents His way of using the greatest of tragedies for the most good. We also know that as much as we wanted Billy to live, God felt he had suffered enough and that he had accomplished enough in his short time to be called from the life of suffering, pain and frustration that surely lay ahead. Although the lives of his family and friends will not be the same and it will remain hard to understand why Bill was taken from us, let us not let the bitter fact of his death overshadow the way in which God used his life to influence us all. We can all be thankful unto God for this life and the immeasurable good which it has accomplished. Although we must now let him return to God, his creator and ours, let us ever keep him before us as an example of what-a rich and deep faith in God can do, not only in his life but in ours as well.
