The Homecoming game on Friday, October 23, resulted in a 36-0 loss to the Centerville Elks. The Panthers came into the game with a 6-1 record hoping to defeat the Elks — a feat that had not been accomplished since the mid 70 ' s, and again the Panthers were no match for an unbeatable Elk offense. ' mm Homecoming 1987 This Homecoming was different from all others for me. This year I was in charge of it. I had to make sure everything was done and done on time. Without the help of so many students and teachers, Homecoming wouldn ' t have been the reality it was. After putting in all the hard work it paid off. Nineteen clubs participated. Each had a float and candidate, who was introduced at the football game Friday night of Homecoming. This year we built a maze for the floats and candidates to sit in. After decorating all day Saturday, the big night finally came. Almost 450 students showed up along with some faculty members. The Bob Gray Orchestra played and at 11:00 the Queen was to be announced. Our M.C., Mr. Manoloff, announced the seventeen second runner-ups, and each received a crown. Then Julie Comerford was announced the first runner-up. I was Queen! I was crowned by Mrs. Lazear, our advisor, and Kristi Knight. In my four years at North that was the most exciting and best thing that has happened to me. — Melinda Wallace Homecoming Dance ' 87 A night of amazement in Hollywood I can ' t believe I made it; I ' m so happy Melinda Wallace dances Danny Hixon. Senior Memories The 1988 Prom was celebrated on April 23 from 8 pm till midnight at the newly renovated Marketplace. On the Edge of a Dream was the theme chosen by the junior class for this annual gala event. The faculty provided on-site valet parking for the prom-goers and the music was provided by the Majestic Music Productions. Again Mr. Flannery provided his exquisite photo service for those wishing a more permanent remembrance of the occasion. Each attending couple received a Keychain (which served as a ticket) and a cocktail flute as momentos. The after Prom was held at the Springfield Court Club from 1 am till 3 am. Late night revelers enjoyed racquetball, volleyball, foosball and a lot of late night (or early morning) socializing. Plenty of good music, cold soft drinks, and free Pizza was on hand. The team won their first meet f Alter and Fairborn, and re- mained strong and encouraged throughout the season. The most valuable player went to Jamie Eubanks. The Most Dedicated (coaches award) went to Patti Henize, and the Most Improved went to Kathy Parks. Coach Whited Eubanks is ready for a perfect routine. T I C Sam Heinzen, a well achieved gymnast at North High School, who has done well above the average student. He has practiced gymnastics since he was seven, and scored high amongst the judges since his freshman year. When Sam began gymnastics he was coached by the late Jim Smith. He spent seven years with Jim before going to the Columbus Gymnastics Academy where he is currently training. Sam competes in all six of the men ' s Olympic events which are: Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Long Horse Vault, Parallel Bars, High Bar. Dennis Mclntyre, Sam ' s present coach, has led him to compete in the State High School competition all four of his competing years. He placed first in Long Horse Vault, second on Floor Exercise, second on Parallel Bars, and placed seventh all-around his junior year. In his senior year he defended his title on Long Horse Vault, won Floor Exercise, placed second on Parallel Bars, third on High Bar, and finished seventh all-around. Through Sam ' s hard work and consistent effort he is now choosing the college he will attend. He will be able to take a little piece of North High School with him and still always know that the class of 1988 will support him. GOOD LUCK ALWAYS. GO SAMMY!! John Kuss, Andy Long. Larry Ray, Hakim Islam This past season was the best : we ' ve had at rSorth High school. It was made possible by the excellent coach- ing staff we had. Coach Mark Stoll and brother Doug put in an enormous amount of time in order for us to per- fect our skills. They helped us each day and taught us to win ahd have fun. We finished the season with 15 wins. We played well together and went through some bad days together. Most of the games. We learned to shake off the losses and to start each game fresh. The Morth Baseball Program has changed dramatically during my four years tenure. The first year we got trashed several times. Through hard work and dedication by both players and the coaches Morth Baseball is once again greatly respected. It wasn ' t easy but our hard work paid off. I ' ll never forget the 1988 Panther team. We had several different types of personalities but we blended together on the field and worked excellent to- gether. The Softball team at Morth High had a much improved season in 1988. Their re- cord was raised to 6 wins 10 losses, with 4 of the wins in the tough Western Ohio League. The team had much talent this year and expects to return all but 4 seniors next year. This season ' s MVP was Shelly Leonard and The Captain was named Rae Ridder, both juniors. The highlight of the season was our victory over Ketteing Alter in our 3rd game. The knights, a perennial power in Ohio Basketball, were defeated by the panthers after successive wins over Greenon and Dayton Meadowdale. The team shot 58.5% from the field in the opener against Greenon. A second highlight was a victory over Wayne team which was fighting for the WOL lead at the time we played. Derrick Buford became the 1 st player in North ' s history to letter all 4 years. Derrick is 3rd on the career scoring list with 1056 points. He is also 3rd In Career Rebounds with 708. In the Meadowdale game North scored 56 second half points to rank 3rd in the history of North in points scored in one half. Steve Victoria was the leading scorer with 353 points and led the team in Field Goal Percentage (54.5%). Neil Stewart was the leader in assists. Steve Victoria, Derrick Buford and Rob Colvin formed one of the strongest re- bounding trios in the history of North. Reggie loyner led the team in Free Throw accuracy followed closely by Nei l Stewart. With the advent of the 3 point shot in high school basketball Ahmad Islam led the team in that category. Against Fairborborn Derrick Buford tied a school record by making 9 consecutive free throws. Derrick Buford and Steve Victoria were named to the All-County team. Derrick played in the District 9 All-Star Game and led his team in scoring. Steve made the All-Area Team (picked by the News-Sun), 1st Team District 9 and the Dayton Daily News All-Area Team. Both Derrick and Steve were d Players of the Week by the Springfield News. Another first for the 87-88 season was the presence of Rune Pederson, an exchange student from Norway.
