POLARIS North High School Springfield, Ohio 1971 Volume 11 Advisor: Dolly Kline Editors: Mary Hughes and Carole Lemaster in September, 1970, we groped through the computerized maze of scheduling and curriculum, searching for the courses we thought would serve us best. but the actual schooling from 8:10 to 2:54 was only one, small part of the puzzle of life at north, after school we could be a participant or a spectator, strive for individual accomplishment or team success. we sought among our fellow students for someone who would share and care. and we filled our spare time with pleasures of our own making. from a bewildering array of fad and fashion, we had If to choose our styles. we began to study the values we had grown up with and Calley Case Raises Issu u began to search for answers to the problems of our world. Martie Flood recaptures a bit of the ' 40 ' s. Curt Britton, Steve Otto, Steve Wilkins, and Tim Worman trim up a bar- bershop song. ' Something Special Arrives On Stage The girls of As You Like It use umbrellas to keep raindrops from fall- ing on their heads. Stage lights dimmed, the auditorium became hushed, and all eyes were focused on the stage. North High talent carried the audience through a half-century of memorable music. The best of George M. Cohan, famous Broadway tunes, the Charles- ton, the jitterbug, a barber- shop quartet, electric guitars, and selections from HAIR were sparked by slapstick comedy routines. The pro- gram had Something spe- cial for everybody. Here ' s As You Like It in action. Dolly (Patti Smith) prays for guidance. Misunderstanding Explodes Verena (Peggy Duncan), the family breadwinner, asserts her authority. A Southern home, a tree house, and flashlights pro- vided the atmosphere for THE GRASS HARP, a drama in two acts by Truman Ca- pote. Simple-minded and overprotected Dolly Talbo (Patti Smith) escaped to a tree house in order to pro- tect her dropsy cure recipe from the ambitions of her older sister Verena (Peggy Duncan). Sharing her exile were Dolly ' s ward Collin (Curt Britton), the maid Catherine (Gale May), and Judge Charlie Cool (Jim Hagen). After a romance, a fish bowl bath, and a shoot- ing, a bittersweet ending re- sulted as the sisters were reunited. Blackberry wine, a glowing fire, and congenial company (Patti Smith, Gale May, Jim Hagen, and Curt Britton) warm a chilly night in the woods. Self-appointed agents of law and order (Gary Miller, John Woodrow, and Ed Varno) disrupt the peaceful existence of the runaways (Gale May, Jim Hagen, Patti Smith, and Curt Britton). The situation explodes when Collin (Curt Britton) is shot during the confusion. Sobered by tragedy, the townspeople regret their misguided intervention in a family quarrel. Coming Home 1970 Homecoming 1970 began in the crackling blaze of the pep rally ' s bonfire. Excite- ment mounted at pregame activities as the new queens arrived in sputtering antique cars and were crowned while North ' s marching one hun- dred performed Lara ' s Theme. With victory as their goal, the Panthers unleashed their muscle to overpower the Centerville Elks, 20-8. As the grid faded, into focus came the Back When dance floor with its old-fashioned lampposts and checkered tableclothes. The colorful balloons suspended from the rafters floated to the floor during the traditional Queens ' Dance. The subsequent pop! pop! of bursting balloons interrupted many romantic moments. Eleven-thirty came, amplifiers were unplugged, bright lights flicked on, and Homecoming 1970 was over. Flustered Flannery flips Dee Dee Downs and Paul Chat- field dance Eskimo style. Homecoming Royally TOP LEFT: Queen Nancy Bridgman and Tom Hartman. TOP RIGHT: Queen Iris Parker and Jim West. TOP CENTER LEFT: Queen Debbie Birch and Ron O ' Brien. BOTTOM CENTER LEFT: Queen Susie Speros and John Kuhns. CENTER RIGHT: Queen Jenny Taggart and John Bauer. BOTTOM: Bob Diehl, Queen Martie Flood, Queen Kathie Mef- ford, and Ed Sanders. U.S.A. Portrays America ' s Growth U.S.A., the 1971 Thespian play, was the personification of the United States in character. The lives of the various characters paralleled the social and financial growth of the U.S. through World War I to the Great Depression. A series of newsreels between scenes related the history-making events of the times. Carrying on a sociable conversation are Eric Wag- ner, Gail Scott, and Tom Wilson. Linda Blackwood reveals more of her character in a monologue. Susan Eberling waits for the next cue. Modeling the apparel of the gay nineties are Gail Scott and Eric Wagner. Even the cast must help on sets, as Ed Varno finds out. Jail is not necessarily an unhappy experience. Are you sure you want to marry him, dearie? Sadie Rates XXX Merciless Judge Shoenbach orders Bill Montei and Debbie Dunlap into jail. Women ' s Lib had its night at the traditional Sadie Haw- kins Dance, which was rated XXX this year. Ragged cou- ples were rushed into mar- riage by tricky Marryin ' Sam (Mr. Rice) and received white curtain rings as their pre- cious wedding bands. Sev- eral felt a dastardly hand clutch their shoulders as that dirty Sheriff Turner arrested anyone for a price. There was little justice for the innocent as dire sentences for uncom- mitted crimes were pro- nounced by that uncompro- mising Judge Shoenbach. Couples patiently (and im- patiently) waited at the en- trance of the fortune-telling tent, eagerly anticipating the good fortunes which would be revealed to them by Pre- dictin ' Pearl (Darlene Se- doris). Lovers ' Leap, the tra- ditional end for unhappy ro- mances, took a happy turn as lovers leaped off and hit the pile of foam rubber. When not distracted by any of these diversions or by the free popcorn and coke, couples danced to the rock- ing tempo provided by the Crescent Carnival. Sheriff Turner makes The Grab. Women ' s Lib Strikes Again Brenda Holland models her striped pantsuit. Flowered brocade makes a pretty spring formal. Carolyn Thomas and her little friends have their modeling debuts. A cuddley coat is Cindy Mesar- vey ' s sewing reward. Individualism was the thing at the 1971 style show spon- sored by the clothing classes under the direction of Miss Bishop, Mrs. Hart, and Mrs. Parchen. Although the theme of Women ' s Lib was re- flected in the jumpsuits and pantsuits, femininity endured as girls modeled velvet for- mals and flowered dresses. Little sisters, nieces, and nephews added a cute com- plementary touch to the show. White lattice-work and green bushes make a pretty setting for a spring fashion show. Campaign Spirit Hits North Publicity is part of any campaign. Everything from Hunt ' s Snack-Pak to Payton ' s sexy posters to Mr. Peanut Man greeted the student body as they entered the school on Student Government Day. Rousing rally songs and little tags were used to per- saude seniors to vote for the right candidate to represent them for a day in municipal government posts. Marcia RIcketts gets help from Mr. Peanuts. Which witch is which Judge Steve Otto, Commissioner Rick Vince, and Commissioner Bob Bell seem hard at work. Performing at the Hot Box are Adelaide ' s Girls. Where ' s The Action? Where ' s the action? At Nathan Detroit ' s floating crap game, of course. So, the guys are gamblers? The dolls? A nightclub singer and a Salva- tion Army sergeant? What a combination! North ' s spring musical GUYS AND DOLLS was just that— a combination of overworked crews, a spirited orchestra, and a hard-working cast. With a cast of characters ranging from innocent Sarah Brown to sleasy Nicely-Nicely John- son, the show provided both the humor and the action needed for a good comedy. Accompanying the singers was the orchestra di- rected by Mr. Smarelli. Benny Southstreet (Curt Britton) and Nicely Nice- ly (Tim Worman) add a comical touch to the show. After drinking too much, Sarah Brown (Candi Slusser) starts a bar room brawl. Happy Couples Catch ' ' Yh Dim lights, soft music, graceful palm trees, and gurgling fountains combined to create the exotic atmo- sphere of a tropical paradise at North ' s first open prom. Following tradition, the Ju n- iors hosted this formal dance in honor of the soon-to-be- graduated seniors. Seniors Martie Flood and Ed Carter reign as King and )ueen of the Junior-Senior Prom. ' Shelter Performs At After-Prom After the formal dance, couples relax at After Prom. Sleepy students settle down in the comfortable chairs of the Regent Theatre. At midnight, the action moved to the Women ' s build- ing at the Fairgrounds where energetic couples danced to the music of Shelter, a local rock band. Their more fa- tigued friends took advantage of the chairs and free refresh- ments. Later, all relaxed at the Rolling Stones ' film Gimme Shelter. As You Like It Brings Variety As You Like It was or- ganized as a group of thirty juniors and seniors who per- formed musical show tunes, current pop numbers, and old folk songs. Adding a little variety to the group was a band composed of group members Steve Wilkins, Curt Britton, and John Blackwood. The band performed some of their own originals and provided back-up for group and solo numbers. The group ' s first per- formance was the fall variety show, followed by two Christ- mas programs. Throughout the year came several other shows. The grand finale of the year was the overnight trip to Columbus to perform with Joanne Worley for the Miss Mid-Ohio pageant at the Ohio Theater. As You Like It performs under a strobe light. North ' s Symphonic Choir performs in the splendor of the Netherland Hilton ' s scarlet and gold Hall of Mirrors. Choir Travels To Cincinnati Contemporary was the key- note of the 1970-71 Sym- phonic Choir. At the Christ- mas concert, the group gave the premiere performance of Jan Bender ' s The Creation. The choir received national recognition in being chosen to present a concert of con- temporary music at the Na- tional Music Educators ' .con- vention. On March 11, after months of intensive practice, ninety-five nervous choir members traveled to Cincin- nati to entertain the conven- tion with a program ranging from religious numbers ac- companied by electronic tape to a selection from the modem opera Peter Grimes. Later in the spring, the choir received a superior rating at the District Choral Contest, which qualified them for the State competition. Other activities included participation in the County Choral Festival and in North ' s commencement exercises. As the choir and Mrs. Virginia Holl, their accompanist, watch ap- provingly, Mr. Baber addresses an audience composed of music ed- ucators from across the nation. Patterns in Sound is an example of the inno- vative music the choir sings. This year, North hosts the annual County Choral Festival. Through a deluge of rain and a field of super-slick mud, the band placed first in Ohio and sec- ond overall in Zanesville ' s celebrated Bonanza of Bands. Senior Class Council Goes Liberal Apathetic was not the word for this year ' s Senior Class Council. Its attempts at in- novation caused much dis- pute among members and fellow classmates, and the council itself often spHt over major concerns such as Class Night format, choice of Commencement speakers, and a proposal to allow stu- dents to work off demerits. The council also held a Christmas dance to raise money for the Valerie Mar- koch Kidney Fund, attempted to move graduation cere- monies outdoors, and, to round off the year, com- piled a set of helpful hints for next year ' s Senior Class Council. Senior Class Officers Allen Wolf, Vice-President; Tim Worman, Secretary-Treasurer; and Jim Roush, President. Student Body Officers Are V.I.P. ' s Student Body Officers Jeff Deer, Vice-President; Joe Baldwin, President; and Peggy Duncan, Secretary-Treasurer. Student Body Officers, who are also the officers of the Executive Board, are chosen by their classmates at the end of the junior year. Since all issues concerning the en- tire student body, such as exam exemptions, must come through Executive Board, these officers are the clear- ing house for many proposed changes. Along with these duties, these students usually take charge of selling North High tee-shirts, jackets, jewelry, and stationery.
