LODIIIIIG IIITU THE FUTURE Twenty years had passed slnce the hallways of Holland Hugh School reverberated w1th the footsteps of the departlng Semor class twenty years of toll and progress Bemg em ployed by one of the local newspapers the Eppard Scandals I was requested to make a survey of the progress and actlvttres made by the Holland graduatmg class of 1950 Havrng heard that a number of our graduatlng class were ltvmg In Florlda I declded to make my f1rst v1s1t there Upon arrlval I reglstered at the Harold Wh1te Hotel where Norman Carter was the advertxslng manager After several hours of l1fe ln thrs excluslve hotel I dlscovered that others of my earher acquamtances had been tempted by the allur mg advertlsements and had taken up T951 dence rn the other apartments Into the wee hours of the mornmg laughter song and gay muslc drlfted from the penthouse where Bob Grlsdorf now rdolrzed by m1ll1ons of women for h1s croorung of songs royally entertamed hrs guests He told me that the featured smger rn the Bambow Boom was the blonde Barbara Iones She IS ga1n1ng wxde acclalm w1th her unlque 1nterpretat1on of popular songs Wlth the break of dawn came the end of the party and those present trooped home to get a much needed rest As I had a ten oclock appomtment w1th lxm Eubank now the Walter Wznchell of Palm Beach I arose at nlne thlrty fmrshed dressmg and ordered a hearty breakfast whrch was brought and served by the sm1l1ng and crrsply dressed mald Barbara Saunders The eff1c1ent elevator operator took me to the lobby Passmg through the lounge I saw Thomas Brown Larry Irwxn and Herbert Wohlfarth engrossed as usual 1n the comlc sect1on of the Eppard Scandals From them my attentron was attract ed to the smartly dressed DOTIS Carroll hurrymg to her exclusxve dress shop Agaxn on the street I was greeted by Ierry Sosbe the doorman whose broad shoulders and excellent bulld were strrkmgly apparent ID h1s grey and scarlet umform wrth gold buttons He halled a taxxcab for me and to my surprlse It was drrven by that excellent and careful dnver Nan Peebles We had not gone more than three blocks when we were brought to a halt by the shrlll blasts of a pollceman s wh1stle Instantly he appeared and who should rt be but Roy T1bb1ts who angrily mformed Nan that the speed l1m1t of 60 mlles an hour was enforced strlctly at the mam thoroughfare We proceeded at a slower pace passmg Nancy Wyman s beauty salon Howard Dodge S gas statlon Glona Zrarno s Women s Apparel Shop and Doug Daye s Conservatory of Muslc My destlnatton was the recently bullt Atkm son School of Destgn planned by Ora Stull the natlonally known archltect and burlt by the contractors Holloway and Holloway Enter I 1ng the bu1ld1ng I nottced Mary Ann Strain at the lnformatlon desk and Fred Hott the clerk at the cxgar and candy counter st1ll chew1ng gum Arrlvmg at Rex Lorenzen s offlce I was usher ed 1nto h1s presence by h1s pretty secretary Rex was the scandal Qatherer of Florlda I was determtned to learn all I could from the 1nforrnat1on obta1ned 1n I found that Mrs Slna tra fthe former Ioan I-Ialll is solournmg w1th her husband at therr cottage on Lake Crystal The1r nelghbors are the famous mghtmgales loAnn Hartman and Betty Flory As I walked along 12th Street I heard the dlstant wa1l of a srren and as 1t grew louder I dtscovered 1t to b the f1re alarm Hurrylng to the scene of the f1re the B1glow Palnt Company I notxced dense clouds of smoke pourlng from the bu1ld1ng Suddenly I was rudely pushed behlnd the ropes by no other than Lreutenant Btchard Augustyn1ak of the polxc force He ordered flatfeet Larry Noyes and Bob Prtce to take care of the rncreaslng crowd As soon as the f1re was under control I hurr1ed back to the hotel to get some rest Arrlvmg ln my room I was thoroughly aroused by the headllne of the evenmg paper Great Drscovery IH the Fleld of Chem1stry It seemed that Dale Iones and Sue NOWOWIGJ skl had planned and bu1lt a plane costmg no loyce Frazrer Smce h1s keyhole peep1ng more than an automob1le I read also that hm Iohnoff was f1rst baseman w1th the Cleveland Indians and lerry Kulwrckr center for the Mmneapolls Lakers The womens page d1s played three outstandmg models Donna Nach trab Betty Krohn and Donna Eyre I read that Glona Plotrowskr Shlrley Howell and Mar1e Hubbard once Well known golfers were now caddylng at the Smegowskr Greens golf course Tumlng to the comlc page I was lntrlgued by the captlon W1ld Life the com1c str1p written by Shrrley Bates and 1llustrated by VIYQIHIG Roberts The rad1o page announced the weekly broadcast of loyce Pfaff s Amateur Hour at 7 OO p m Early the next mornmg I cont1nued my slght seemg tour As I entered Mercy Hosp1tal I notxced Dorothy BIOWHIHQ Supermtendent of Nurses and loyce Hazel Supervlsor of the Nursery Flymg back to Toledo 1n a luxur1ous plane prloted by V1olet Maynhart wmth Ann Iones as alr hostess I landed at the Munlclpal A1r port As soon as I arr1ved home I found a letter postmarked Berlm To my surprrse the letter was from Pat Adamsk1 Luella Allen and Elame Feaster askmg me to get m touch wxth some old frlends for a get together My asslgnrnent completed I settled down
