L '1 - '. L. Mr. Walter Zeck was ap- pointed on February 27, 1947, to fill the unexpired term of Mr. William E. Dyer whose resignation had been previously ac- cepted. Board of Education As official representatives of the school district, the Board of Education consists of citizens elected to that office for a period of four years. The Board is the governing body which officially acts on all matters and questions pertaining to the Springfield Local Schools. The Board holds regular monthly meetings with the school executives attending in an advisory capacity. Each member of the Springfield Local Board of Education by giving generously of his time and efforts has made it possible for them to meet many and complex problems confronting all school districts during this period of economic unrest. B. J. BISHOP, B.S., M.A. Supervisor SPRINGFIELD LOCAL Scnoons For the past five years Mr. Bishop has capably served as the Supervisor of the Springfield Local Schools. Although administrative duties occupy most of his time, no problem is too small to receive his attention. He is always willing to talk with any students about their difficulties. Through individual counsel with mem- bers of the Senior Class, he has encour- aged many to continue their schooling, and has aided others in the selection of their life's work. The enrollment for the school year, 1946-47, was approximately twelve hun- dred. This increase, of nearly two hun- dred pupils over last year, created a critical housing problem. ln 1945 a bond issue was passed to provide for enlarging and improving the present school build- ings, but, because of the increased cost of building materials and labor, the contemplated building program has of necessity been temporarily delayed. HAROLD E. RYDI-ze, B.S., M.S., M.A. Superintendent LUCAS COUNTY Sci-iooLs Mr. Ryder is completing his seventh year as Superintendent of the Lucas County Schools. Besides supervising all the schools in the county, he helps in solving many complex problems of state and national importance. He is a past president of the National County Super- intendents' Association, a member of Ohio Reading Circle Board, and actively participates in many other educational and civic organizations. His thorough understanding of school problems has enabled him to elevate the schools of Lucas County to a high place in the Ohio public school system. ' if . 4 ' I 4: ' . is if .N,L Q ,, lQ . BANQUET AWARDS SERVING G. A. A. ' Virginia Gozdowskig Wanda Beltg Beverly Bondg Rita Wilczynski. The organization, one of the most active in the school, raised money during the past year by sponsoring the following activities: the noon programs, in co-operation with the Var- sty H , the sale of refreshments and pro- grams at the home games, a dance, The Hay- loft Hop, in October, and the sale of buttons and caps. The c1ub's treasury climbed steadily during the year, the debts also climbedg but, a wide margin of profit was prominent throughout the year. The major use to which this money was put was the Athletic Banquet and Dance, given February 15. The Banquet is presented annually to honor the football-baseball-basketball boys, that they might be awarded their merited letters. The guest list numbered one hundred and twenty including the faculty and club members. At the Banquet, pins were awarded to all Senior Girls and awards were presented to the four cheerleaders. Mrs. Logan ably served as our advisor the first semester, giving generously of her time and effort. After Mrs. Logan was granted a leave of absence at the end of the first semes- ter, Mrs. Cleota Fye, assumed her duties as advisor and aided in completing a successful year. The Varsity H club started its organization this year with many hardships left over from last year, but, as the year progressed, it got back on its feet and did a great deal to promote athletics. Under the direction of Mr. Barnes, the Varsity H has organized a booster club for the benefit of the football team. Many interested persons and prominent business men joined this club by gen- erously contributing to this fund. The money was used to buy football equipment. Mrs. Frank Wagemann baked a cake in the shape of a lamb with white wool Ccocoanutl and gave it to the boys for a cake raffle. Larry Talbert was the lucky winner. Alternating every week throughout the year, the club in co-operation with the G.A.A. has spon- sored noon programs consisting of dances and shows. The following officers were elected at the first meeting: President, Sam Scottg Vice President, Len Bucher: Secretary, Tom Kigerg Treasurer, Don Dickersong Reporter, Russ Bannister, Ser- geant-at-Arms, William Urban. Of the eight issues published each year, the Seniors edit the first seven, the newly elected Junior Staff edits the last issue in order to gain practical experience which will enable them to begin the first fall issue with a more thorough understanding of newspaper work. The experience of operating the mimeo- graph, using the mimeoscope, cutting stencils, planning pages, and numerous other tasks that may be useful to them in future years. The paper is entirely self-supporting and a Town Tattler Fund is maintained through the sales and advertising. All supplies, paper, ink, stencils, and equipment are purchased out of this fund. Arranging the work so that it would be done during study periods and the advisor's free periods presented the greatest obstacle in getting the Tattler out on tirne, but, by doing this work after school hours, we man- aged to get the Tattler out on time on all but two occasions-a record in itself. 4 CAMERA CLUB FIRST ROW: Donald Woods: Don Hazel, President: Gene Irwin: Marvin Geiser: William Jackson: Walter Stender, Vice President. During the school year 1946-1947 the Holland Band took part in a great number of school activi- ties. They played at Pep meetings, special pro- grams and at football games. The first really important event of the year was the Swanton Corn Festival on Spetember 21, 1946, where the Band won first prize in the contest for the local school bands. The Band was very proud to bring our school's name to everyone's attention in this way. All through the football season the Band attend- ed all but one game, and was a real boost to the morale and school spirit of all. On October 4, 1946, the Band had what could be called a Band Day . Leaving the school in the morning they went to Oak Harbor for the Home- coming for Veterans. After a long march they re- turned to Toledo to have supper at Grace E. Smith's Cafeteria. From there they went to Wau- seon where they cheered the victory of a hard fighting football team. ' Through graduation this year the Band will lose four members who have played during their four years of high school: John Miller, trumpet: Don- ald Bridges, clarinet and saxophone: Joyce Pollock, clarinet: and Earle Davoll, bass. lil' l I r MAJORETTES 4 Dorothy Eicheg Grace Hauprichtg Donna Manley: Mary Piaseckig Elizabeth Kaiser: Carolyn Rodebaugh. Membership to the club is limited to the girls of the upper three classes. Each year since the club reorganized from the F.H.A. to the J .U.G. in the fall of '43, it has increased in membership. This year totaling well over 60. In October the club held its annual initiation party to install new mem- bers into the club. True to tradition, it consisted of an all day initiation ceremony, followed by a pot-luck dinner and a theater party after school hours. The club functioned this year under the supervision of our Home Eco- nomics teacher, Miss Lash: and following her resignation at the mid-year, Mrs. Arnold, assumed her duties as advisor of the club. 2 K C , . The improvement of this year's football team over those of past years can be credited to the training by Coach Barnes and his assistants, Coach Crim and Coach Maxwell. Although the boys thought that Coach Crim made the calisthenics a little too rugged at times, they stuck with it. It was this conditioning and the new plays which Coach Barnes taught them that enabled the team to hold its own against heavier teams and to tie a championship team of the Class A League. Holland opened their season against Liberty Center with an evenly matched game, but Holland lost 2-0. Swanton was the next opponent and Holland won 12-6. Jack Bade made the first touchdown when he caught a pass and Ed Burgin went over for the second. In this game Don Kulwicki made a 65-yard kick which was the longest of the season. Ottawa Hill's 17-game winning streak was broken by Holland with a score of 8-0. Ed Burgin made this tally and Holland also caught Ottawa Hills behind the line for a safety. Wauseon was next on the list for Holland, and Holland added one more to their list of victims. The score was 12-7 with Ed Burgin going over for both touchdowns. Clay came to Holland this year expecting to carry home another victory against Holland. After the Hol- land boys had held Clay in their own territory for three quarters, Holland pushed Clay all the way back October 18 Holland ..... 0 Rossford ........ 13 October 25 Holland ..... 0 Sylvania ........ 19 November 1 Holland ..... 18 Montpelier ...... 28 November 8 Holland ..... 0 Whitmer ........ 33 for a touchdown. After having held a much heavier team for three quarters, Holland's strength ran out and Clay made a touchdown in the closing minutes of the game to tie the score at 6 points. Rossford came to Holland for the next game. Al- though the Holland boys tried hard, they could not get into the pay dirt. The field was wet and there was no holding Rossford. The final score was 13-0. When Holland Went to Burnham, the field was a mass of mud and water holes. They fought hard but couldn't stop the Burnham Eleven, and lost 19-0. Holland journeyed to Montpelier determined to win against an undefeated team. Our boys lost, but this was a very good game and not in the least what Montpelier expected. The boys rolled up 18 points against a heavier squad and held them to 28. The game with Whitmer ended the season and also high school football for six Senior members of the squad: Sam Scott, fullback, Don Kulwicki, quarter- backg Ray Augustyniak, left guardg Tom Kiger, right guardg Don Kaiser, right tackle, Russell Bannister, left tackle. The final score of this gamewas 33-0. Holland had a very good season after all things are taken into consideration. They played only two Class B schools and won both games. The remaining games of the season were all played against Class A schools. Of these games they won one and tied Clay who later became the Northwestern League Champions. in 'fy N 1 ,, 6 X + xg 5 ,L in 4 sig., 5? Paul Mohr, Don Dickerson, Jack Bade, Len Bucher, Lewis Cramer, and Dick Hughes were moved up to the Varsity team and proved to be valuable players. Even with the loss of these players, the Reserves continued to improve and ended the season as a well balanced team. The next game was with Waterville and they also lost this one by a score of 3-1. In the next two games against Whitehouse, the series was split, Holland won the first by a score of 6-5, and Whitehouse the second by a score of 7-5. Holland then visited Monclova and came home after making only three hits and' losing by a score of 14-2. In a return game with Water- ville, Holland again lost by a lopsided score of 11-1. Whitmer visited Holland, but it wasn't very suc- cessful as Holland scampered to a 7-5 win. As Holland moved into the Lucas County Tourna- ment, they drew Monclova and were shut out by a score of 5-0. This ended the Tournament for Holland. Through graduation the '46 team lost eight players: George Kent, Paul Cairl, Harold Cramer, Louis Noe, Ray Smalley, Joe Johnoff, Ray Myers, and Ralph Szymanowski. 1947 During the 1947 season, the Holland team played its first game against Whitehouse, and lost 10-2. Holland won its second game by a score of 5-2 against Waterville. In the Lucas County Tournament at Swayne Field, Holland met Whitehouse and won by a score 11-1. For their second game of the Torunament, they met Monclova, but the game was called be- cause of rain in the third inning. The following day the two teams met at the DeVilbiss ball park, and again rain ended the game, this time in the sixth inning at a score of 5-0 in favor of Monclova. Holland did not have a chance to prove what they could do because of so much cold rainy wea- ther which did not permit practice and forced them to cancel several games. The line-up for '47 was as follows: Catcher, Sam Scott, Pitchers, Lewis Cramer and Frank Szur- minski, First Base, Jim Johnoff, Second Base Richard Hughes, Shortstop, Don Dickerson, Third Base, Tom Kiger, Left Field, Roy Tibbits, Right Field, Paul Mohr, Center Field, Art Wood. Substi- tutes were: Catcher, Frank Gozdowski, and Bob Kolasinski, Pitcher, Jack Bade, Frank Sniegowski, and Jack Stone, Infield, Al Szymanowski, Outfield, Fred Hott, Don Kulwicki, Richard Katafiasz, Ray Augustyniak, and Perry Hall. Although the season began late and rain did not permit many opportunities for practice, Coach Barnes has done an excellent job with these boys. This year's schedule for the remaining games of the season include Waterville, Whitehouse, Ottawa Hills, Macomber, and Woodward. L, f 'E' u- TK -A , ' , fuk ' 1 Twins? Nosey Kid Love! ! .'
