Basketball Varsity Inderrieden. W. A. Fulghum Director of Athletics Mr. Fulghum came to Holland in the fall of 1941 as Director of Physical Education and Head Coach. Since the fall of 1942, he has been Director of Athletics and Supervisor of Visual Education. Beginning in 1942 he held the position of Principal of the High School for three years: he was also Principal of the Holland Elementary School during the school year of 1944-45. During these five years, he has earned the respect and admiration of the entire student body. He has been interested in increasing the scholastic stand- ing of the school, especially of the boys participating in sports. lt was through his efforts that the Varsity H is sponsoring the trophy which is to be awarded each year to the athlete who has maintained the highest scholastic and athletic ratings during the entire four years of high school. Football FIRST ROW: Perry Hall, Ralph Szymanowskl, Frank Gozdowski, Russell Bannister, William Urban, Samuel Scott, Louis Noe, Leonard Bucher, Benny Atherton. SECOND ROW: Harry Mohr, Doh Adamski, Karl Wohlfarth, Arlo Strole, Ray Augustyniak, Don Pratt, Don Kaiser, Robert Phelps, lack Bade, Stanley Adamski, Donald Shrlner, Ray Myers. Daniel Chinnll. Although he is not very tall, he proved to be a good player with accuracy in long shots and ball handling. Danny likes to play guard where he has a chance to bag some long shots. l-le plays baseball and some football, although he doesn't care much for the latter. In baseball he played shortstop and outfield and has earned two varsity letters. Lester Davidson. Lester came to Holland in his junior year from Woodward where the participated in basketball and football. He played on the Holland varsity the two years he has been here and was our captain during his senior year. Les can play guard or forward and make a shot from any place on the floor, He was high point man this year and helped the team many times with his ability to make circuit shots around the baskets. George Kent. George has played three years of basketball and two years of baseball. He has played one and a half years of reserve basketball and the same number of years on the varsity team. During his junior year he held down the catcher's spot, and he will be on the job again this spring. Gene Gibson. Gene was about the smallest man of the football team, but he proved to be a good quarterback be- cause of his ability to handle the ball. Gibby has eamed varsity letters in football for two years, and was on the varsity basketball team. Gene had tough luck in receiving a back injury which kept him out of most of the football games. Harold Cramer. Harold played four years oi basketball and two years of football. He played three years on the reserve team and one on the varsity. He held down one of the guard positions on this year's varsity team. All during the football season he was out for backfield. He played second base on the baseball team. THIRD ROW: Iohn Moslnlak, Gene Gibson, Ervin Kokocinski, Robert Irwin, Lester Davidson, Robert Haupricht, Robert Smith, Mr. Fulghum, Coach, Richard Poraszynski, Ioseph Iohnofi, Harold Cramer, Donald Kulwlcki, William Haupricht, Ray Smalley, Edwin Burgin, Don Dickerson. ABSENT: Richard Smalley, Robert Dickerson. Daniel Chinnis, Gordon Wagner. Ray Smalley. In addition to being a good student, Ray is an excellent tumbler and, takes part in all sports except basketball. Ray has attended the Holland schools in the grades and high school with the exception of his Sophomore year. Returning to Holland in his junior year, he played football and baseball. During his senior year he played left half on the football team, and he intends to go out for baseball this year. Ralph Ssymcmowslzi. Ralph has played two years of foot- ball and two years of baseball. He intends to take his brother's place on the pitching staff of Holland's baseball team: last year he played shortstop. During his two years of football, he held down the end position. Ray Myers. Ray played one year of football and two years of baseball. Ray played fullback on the football team during his senior year. He played baseball during his,junior year, and he intends to go out for first base this year. Louis Noe. Louis enjoys playing all sports except basketball and is a good student. He has played three years oi football and is equally good at guard or tackle. He is an excellent baseball player and proved his worth in the outfield. Ervin Kokocinski. Ervin came to Holland from Woodward in his junior year. He has played one year of football as fullback. Ervin has a lot of speed and his experience from Woodward helped him to play on the varsity team. He set up some of'the touchdowns by his hard line plunging. Karl Wohlfarth. Karl started his basketball career in his sophomore year by playing on the reserve team. His height and shooting ability helped him to get on the varsity in his junior and senior years. His favorite spot of play is under the basket where he can use his height and rangy arms to his advantage.

The success of a team is not wholly measured by the number of games won, but also by the sportsmanship and courage acquired in playing a good, clean game and by entering the game with an un- beaten spirit. Ho11and's team was successful in these respects. Both of the games won were played on Hol- land's floor, and were interesting to watch. The team never let its fans down, but kept plugging away at the basket until the end of the game. Harold Cramer, Karl Wohlfarth, Daniel Chin- nis, Lester Davidson, George Kent, and Gene Gibson will graduate this year: but, with the players on the Reserve who will be eligible for the Varsity Holland should have a good team next year.
