Through her splendid leader- ship and guidance this 1946 edition ot the Windmill has been successfully published. She has given generously of her time to- ward making this and the last two preced- ing issues of the Windmill a success. I' rf' E' F A F' .42 ss. 7 .7- o nil: QLII Board of Education B. I. Bishop, Supervisory H. E. Ryder, County Superintendent, Paul E. Cairl, Member, G. E. Swope, Clerk: George Griffin, President, Hugh MacOueen, Member, Arthur Cleland, Vice President. Serving as official representatives of the school district, the Board of Educa- tion consists of citizens elected to that office for a period of four years. The Board determines the school policies and is the governing body which legally acts on all matters and questions pertaining to the Springfield Local Schools. The Board of Education holds regular monthly meetings with the school executives attending in an advisory capacity. Upon this group, during the l945-46 school year, rested the responsibility of placing before the electorate the proposed bond issue providing for a new elementary school building program. This bond issue was successful, and the next task of the Board will be to provide the maximum amount of school build- ings possible with the money they have available. The Springfield Township Board of Education has faithfully discharged all of its duties. Each member of the Board has given freely and generously of his time and efforts in attempting to serve the patrons of our school district. At the time this annual was published, the Board was operating with four members due to the resignation of Mr. William E. Dyer. B. I. Bishop, B.S., M.A. Supervisor Springfield Local Schools This year marks the completion of Mr. Bishop's fourth year as Supervisor of Springfield Local Schools and his twenty- fifth year in the field of education. From his wide experience with the problems facing youth and his understanding inter- est in promoting the growth of the individ- ual, he regularly counsels with the mem- bers of the graduating class, to aid them in choosing their life work or further schooling. This year the school system exceeded the one thousand mark in enrollment, and the present buildings became inadequate. Under his direction, a campaign for a pro- posed building program was successfully culminated with the passage of a bond issue in the amount of Sl90,000. Three new school building additions will be provided at the present Crissey, Dorr Street, and Holland elementary schools. Mr. Bishop's life is dedicated to the task of securing for every boy and girl the opportunity of receiving equally, a good educational foundation, Harold E. Ryder. B.S., M.S.. M.A. Superintendent Lucas County Schools Mr. Ryder is completing his sixth year as Superintendent of the Lucas County Schools. Besides supervising all the schools in the county, he helps in solving many complex problems of state and na- tional importance. He is a past president of the National County Superintendents' Association, a member of Ohio Reading Circle Board, and actively participates in many other educational and civic organi- zations. His thorough understanding of school problems has enabled him to ele- vate the schools of Lucas County to a high place in the Ohio public school system. l F. B. The club is governed by a constitution, and new members are initiated. According to tradition, the Senior girls received pins. The organization raised money by sponsoring the noon programs, in co-operation with the Varsity They also sold refreshments, pro- grams, and the school colors at the home games arid the Basketball Tournament. To further in- crease the funds, the Autumn Hop was given in November, a show in December, and luke Box dances after the Clay and Waterville bas- ketball games. During the school year the G. A. A. girls earned over five hundred dollars. Refreshments-Autumn Hop The major use for this money was the Athletic Banquet and Dance, which this year included baseball players for the first time, and gave the G. AIA. girls a guest list of one hundred and seventy. This number included the faculty and club members. Other expenses for the club were new uniforms for the cheerleaders, G. A. A. pins for all Senior girls, and cheerleaders' awards. The girls played basketball after school hours under the direction of Miss Callin who also directed the minstrel which was presented in March with much success. Our advisor, Mrs. Potter, has assisted in all of the activities and has always been more than willing to lend a helping hand and to cffer sugestions which helped toward a success- ful year. Varsity H began as a social club for the bene- fit of boys who Won letters in sports. The original club was organized in the fall of 1941 and was active only until the close of basketball season that same school year. ln the fall of 1942 under the direction of Mr. B. I. Bishop and Mr. W. A. Fulghum, the Varsity reorganized, wrote its own constitution, and elected ofifcers. Membership has increased from the original eleven to twenty-two. At the time of reorganization, the purpose of the Varsity H was to supervise the wearing of letters, in order that only those who were eligible to wear letters might do so. At the annual Athletic Banquet, each Senior member is given a varsity key, emblematic of having won a varsity letter in sports and having been a part of the organization, and a silver replica of the ball used in the sport in which he earned his letter. All letter awards are made through the efforts of the Varsity H. At the first meeting this year the following officers were elected: loseph Iohnoff, President: Samuel Scott, Vice President: Lester Davidson, Secretary-Treasurer, Gene Gibson, Reporter, William Urban, Sergeant-at-Arms. After the football season in November, the club held its initiation party for Lester Davidson, George Kent, Ervin Kokocinski, Donald Kulwicki, Russell Bannister, Frank Gozdowski, Edward Burgin, Raymond Myers, and lack Bade. Varsity H has sponsored noon programs which consisted of dancing, quiz shows, wrestling, and movies every other week in con- junction with the G. A. A. Varsity H paid one half of the insurance fee of all athletes partici- pating in a group insurance policy. This was the first time that insurance has been carried for the benefit of the players. This year the Varsity H has voted to sponsor the William A. Fulghum trophy for the out- standing Senior in athletics and scholarship. The winner of this award will have his name en- graved on the trophy and will receive a key emblematic of this award. This trophy will always be on display in the trophy case. Liberty Center was victorious by a score of 6 to 0. It closed the season. by playing Waite who was also victorious by the same score. Although the Blue Zippers have been victor- ious over only two opponents, Wauseon and Sylvania, the boys have shown great spirit in every game they played. The boys have played some very close games, like the one at Waite, 6 to U, and some that they lost by a great score like Montpelier, 46 to U, but the boys are to be complimented on their fine sportsmanship, both during this game and all the others. There were three major injuries and some minor ones this season. Gene Gibson was taken to the hospital for examination tor back injuries following the Swanton game. Don Dickerson re- ceived a broken leg while practicing, and Iohn Mosiniak received broken bones in his leg while playing in the Clay game. Don's and lohn's injuries were so severe that they were out of sports tor the rest of the season. With the graduating class the team will lose thirteen of its players: Ralph Szymanowski, Louis Noe, Karl Wohltarth, Ray Myers, Gene Gibson, Ervin Kokocinski, Robert Irwin, Lester Davidson, Harold Cramer, Robert Smith, Ioseph Iohnoff, Ray Smalley, Daniel Chinnis. But even with this loss, we are sure the boys will make a successful year of it. Although he is not very tall, he proved to be a good player with accuracy in long shots and ball handling. Danny likes to play guard where he has a chance to bag some long shots. l-le plays baseball and some football, although he doesn't care much for the latter. In baseball he played shortstop and outfield and has earned two varsity letters. Lester Davidson. Lester came to Holland in his junior year from Woodward where the participated in basketball and football. He played on the Holland varsity the two years he has been here and was our captain during his senior year. Les can play guard or forward and make a shot from any place on the floor, He was high point man this year and helped the team many times with his ability to make circuit shots around the baskets. George Kent. George has played three years of basketball and two years of baseball. He has played one and a half years of reserve basketball and the same number of years on the varsity team. During his junior year he held down the catcher's spot, and he will be on the job again this spring. Gene Gibson. Gene was about the smallest man of the football team, but he proved to be a good quarterback be- cause of his ability to handle the ball. Gibby has eamed varsity letters in football for two years, and was on the varsity basketball team. Gene had tough luck in receiving a back injury which kept him out of most of the football games. Harold Cramer. Harold played four years oi basketball and two years of football. He played three years on the reserve team and one on the varsity. He held down one of the guard positions on this year's varsity team. All during the football season he was out for backfield. He played second base on the baseball team. In addition to being a good student, Ray is an excellent tumbler and, takes part in all sports except basketball. Ray has attended the Holland schools in the grades and high school with the exception of his Sophomore year. Returning to Holland in his junior year, he played football and baseball. During his senior year he played left half on the football team, and he intends to go out for baseball this year. Ralph Ssymcmowslzi. Ralph has played two years of foot- ball and two years of baseball. He intends to take his brother's place on the pitching staff of Holland's baseball team: last year he played shortstop. During his two years of football, he held down the end position. Ray Myers. Ray played one year of football and two years of baseball. Ray played fullback on the football team during his senior year. He played baseball during his, junior year, and he intends to go out for first base this year. Louis Noe. Louis enjoys playing all sports except basketball and is a good student. He has played three years oi football and is equally good at guard or tackle. He is an excellent baseball player and proved his worth in the outfield. Ervin Kokocinski. Ervin came to Holland from Woodward in his junior year. He has played one year of football as fullback. Ervin has a lot of speed and his experience from Woodward helped him to play on the varsity team. He set up some of'the touchdowns by his hard line plunging. Karl Wohlfarth. Karl started his basketball career in his sophomore year by playing on the reserve team. His height and shooting ability helped him to get on the varsity in his junior and senior years. His favorite spot of play is under the basket where he can use his height and rangy arms to his advantage. Basketball Varsity Inderrieden. W. A. Fulghum Director of Athletics Mr. Fulghum came to Holland in the fall of 1941 as Director of Physical Education and Head Coach. Since the fall of 1942, he has been Director of Athletics and Supervisor of Visual Education. Beginning in 1942 he held the position of Principal of the High School for three years: he was also Principal of the Holland Elementary School during the school year of 1944-45. During these five years, he has earned the respect and admiration of the entire student body. He has been interested in increasing the scholastic stand- ing of the school, especially of the boys participating in sports. lt was through his efforts that the Varsity H is sponsoring the trophy which is to be awarded each year to the athlete who has maintained the highest scholastic and athletic ratings during the entire four years of high school. The success of a team is not wholly measured by the number of games won, but also by the sportsmanship and courage acquired in playing a good, clean game and by entering the game with an un- beaten spirit. Ho11and's team was successful in these respects. Both of the games won were played on Hol- land's floor, and were interesting to watch. The team never let its fans down, but kept plugging away at the basket until the end of the game. They won six out of eleven games and played in three tournament games. This year the County Iunior High League was active for the first time since 1941, and Holland was fortunate to be able to participate. In spite of the tact that the boys had to prac- tice early in the morning, they were present for ninety-five per cent of the seven o'c1ock prac- tices. They had as their motto We don't care which teammate makes the bucket, just so it's made. Holland need never to worry about having a winning team if it can keep a group of boys like these together when they are eligible for the varsity team. From then on the team went on to win six games without a loss. The next game was with Monclova, and behind the no-hit pitching of Earl Cain, Holland won another game. Our next game with Clay was won by a one-run margin. The following week Holland played their last two games of the regular season and the team came through again by beating Monclova and winning over Ottawa Hills. The baseball season of 1945 ended when Holland lost out in the first game of the Tournament which was held at Swayne Field. As most of the boys played varsity ball for their first time and will again be on the team in 1946, Holland should have a championship team.
