Be- fore becoming assisTanT principal, he TaughT many of us algebra and geomeTry. Through The years To come we will always Try To live up To The high ideals he has helped us To seT. And so To you, Dr. William J. Nunan, The class of nineTeen-hundred and TiTTy-six is proud To dedicate This year's Scrivener. . . . Class of 1956 MR. WALTER Editorial Advisor if uf ? Your attainment of academic standards that en- titles you to graduation indicates your apprecia- tion of the educational opportunity America gives its youth. It now becomes your duty to so live and contribute to mankind, materially and morally, in order that this opportunity for education shall con- tinue to be available to future generations. In so doing you will deserve your heritage and preserve American Democracy as you know it. The world is entangled in differences of opin- ions. These differences can be resolved by seeking and finding the true facts. Follow this pattern throughout life and prevent the confusion of mind that results in wasted effort. Remember it was difference of opinion that resulted in the discovery of America. It will chart the course of the United Nations to world peace, but this chart will have to be redrawn, erased and extend- ed by your artistry and that of generations to COFTTS. DR. J. L. HALDERMAN Superintendent of Schools John C. Spahr, William H. Jones, Vice President, Solicitor Donald W. Lehrkinder, Russell E. Hoehl, President, Elizabeth S. Pusey, Secretary, David C. Wolstenholme, F. Wade Hoff- man, Leslie L. Taylor, Treasurer. You have progressed through Spring- field High School during years of rapid growth and have both felt the growing pains and enioyed the facilities of a new high school building. ln this, your class is rather unique. The present junior high classes have not experienced double ses' sions, crowded classes and watching the new high school being constructed. From this you have lived much of life itself. Whereas, you have suffered the problems of a crowded school and looked upon the new building with awe and great expectation, to classes in the future As you leave to take your places in colleges, business, or industry, you can rest assured that your contributions to the development of our fine school have been eminently worthwhile. Do not feel, however, that our interest in your wel- fare stops when you graduate. Your suc- cess after graduation contributes as much to the reputation of our school as your work and activities while you were here. May we extend our best wishes and rea mind you that we will always be glad to help you in any way possible. Richard K. Smith Principal -E- the new building is here and will be taken for granted. As you enter another door of life, what you take for granted and what you look upon as resulting from work and sacrifices of others will, in part, determine your at- titude to life itself. The best of luck to you. Edward T. Richardson ,luv-13 -1 As the day of graduation ap- proaches we are filled with mixed emotions. We are very happy to see our young men and women achieve their educational goals in the second- ary school. We are also proud to see them go forth to take their places in industry or college preparation for future life. Those of us who have had the pleasure of teaching and in extra- curricular activities working closely with the graduating class are reluctant to see such a fine group leave. How- ever, as the word commencement in- fers, this is the beginning of a new and fruitful phase of life, one which will in addition bring honor and glory to the high school they have served so well. My sincere best wishes for lives marked by devotion and service to your fellow men. DR. WILLIAM J. NUNAN ADMINISTRATION Graduation is another landing in your climb up the endless stairs. Twelve big steps and it seems like the top has been reached, but actual- ly how high have you climbed? One day is finished, now begins another . . . a climb through college, technical school or an appreticeship. Whatever task you undertake it will have an end- ing, then a beginning, with the end beginning another. As you approach your day, do your best to succeed in your task, enioy the past, live in the present, and anticipate the future. BRUCE B. The meeting was opened by our class advisors, Mr. Dean Stephens and Miss Edith Bigelow. The purpose of the meeting was to elect class officers. Those elected were Robert Walker, President, Robert Aldinger, Vice President, Beverly Tuckwood, Secretary, and Ricky Mainwaring, Treasurer. Our big event of the year was the planning of the Soph Hop, which was held on May seventh. After many suggestions our Theme Committee, with Beverly Tuck- wood as chairman, decided upon Evening in Paris. The Junior High Gym was in its glory the night the Decorating Committee, headed by Joe DiLuzio, had adorned it with dark blue and pink streamers. Music was supplied by The Senti- mentalists, who were selected by the Band Committee, with Mary Ann Light as chairman. Other chairmen for the dance were Norma Thesen, Publicity Committee, and Marilyn Crowell, Ticket Committee. ln our Junior year we re-elected Robert Walker, President and Beverly Tuck- wood, Secretary. For the offices of Vice President and Treasurer, William Sylvester and Robert Zafis were respectively elected. Our first proiect was the annual magazine sale. Lois Piercy won the prize for selling the highest amount of subscriptions. Since Miss Bigelow had gone abroad as an exchange teacher, Mrs. Elsie Denice became our other advisor for the year. A Ring Committee was composed of the following people, Marianne Henry, Bonnie Hauf, Bob Walker, and Bill Faulkner to decide upon a style which would be the standard ring of Springfield High School in future years. Due to Bob Walker's leaving of school Bill Sylvester became our president. It was then necessary to elect a vice presi- dent. For this election the new system of voting for class officers was inaugurated. Results of this election showed Russell Harris as the victor. Next on the agenda was our preparations for the Junior-Senior Prom held in the honor of the.CIass of fifty-five. It was held at the Penn Sherwood Hotel with Al Leopold supplying the music on Friday night, June third, nineteen hundred fifty-five. Chairmen of the committees for the prom were: Bob Aldinger, Program Committee, Beverly Tuckwood, Invitation Committee, Bill Faulkner, Photography Committee, and Bill Sylvester, Tuxedo Committee. September nineteen fifty-five arrived and we at last had reached our Senior year. To start, Bill Sylvester, Bob Zafis, and Russell Harris were all re-elected to their offices and Norma Phillips became our secretary. The purpose of the first class meeting, which was held on September twenty-ninth, was to have the budget for the year explained. Myra Wardell, Commencement Announcement Committee, Marianne Henry, Senior Play Committee, Sally Jester, Christmas Card Committee, Russell Harris, Band Committee for the Dinner Dance, and Bill Sylvester, Location Committee for the Dinner Dance, were the chairmen chosen for the Senior year activities. Selling Christmas cards was our main project for the year. Everyone did his utmost to make this a success. We made enough money to pay for our SCRIVENER and other Senior activities throughout the year. On November fifteenth our whole class trouped off to New York for a day of education and fun. Our day consisted of the stage show and movie, The Tender Trap, seen at Radio City Music Hall, a complete tour of the United Nations Building, a visit to the tower of the Empire State Building, and a tour through the NBC Radio Building. We had many successful class parties scattered throughout the year. Among them were the Halloween party, the Valentine party, the party after the Senior Play, and the party after Graduation. As usual a good time was had by everyone at all the main dances of the year. The first big dance was the fall formal which featured The Men of Note. The Christmas dance sponsored by the Service Club turned out to be a big success. The next social event was the Turnabout Dance, which as usual had a tremendous turn-out. The annual Tri-School Dance was held at Swarthmore this year and featured our own Men of Note. As usual the Sophomores spon- sored a terrific Soph Hop featuring this year's beautiful May Queen. The Junior- Senior Prom, given by the Junior Class in honor of the Seniors, was held at the Penn Sherwood Hotel. The last big dance of the year was the Senior Dinner Dance held at the Cynwood Club. Not to be forgotten were the dances sponsored during the year by the Mothers' Group and the Student Council. This was the first year that the Council sponsored a Square Dance. This dance proved to be most ener- getic and popular. Our senior play, The Fighting Littles, directed by Miss Edith Bigelow, was presehted the first week-end in March. lt was well received by the audience. A good iob was done by all those who appeared in the play and by those who were back stage helping. lt didn't seem long until the Washington Trip was upon us. The Seniors suc- ceeded in turning Washington upside down, but oh, what fun we had! We toured the Captitol Building, Washington's Monument, The White House, and all other points of interest. When we returned it was time for Senior final exams, but no one seemed to mind since these were going to be our last. On Sunday night, June third, our Baccalaureate Service took place. And then the day of days arrived-Commencement on Wednesday night, June sixth, nine- teen-hundred-fifty-six. Of of study! Two of these games were against Upper Darby and Radnor, which are rated with the best in the state. But slowly the team started rolling and picked up a few victories. The team also ran into a little bad luck at the beginning of the season. Co-Captain Bill Sylvester fractured his wrist two weeks prior to our opening game. Bill was lost to us at the beginning of the season, but when he returned to the line-up he gave the team the extra height and strength that was lack- ing, especially under the back boards. Next in line was the Kiwanis Tournament. Springfield knocked off lnterboro in the first round and were then qualified to play in the semi-finals. Springfield turned back a scrap- py Media team in the semi-finals and were then lined up for the final. A strong Upper Darby team won the final game over Spring- First row: R. Poli, L. Davis, L. Mr. Bell is new to basketball, but is well known for coaching other major sports at Springfield. The team members include co-captain Bill Sylvester, who played last year and is a big man under the boards snatch- ing rebounds. Bill Faulkner, the other co-captain, who also was on the team last year, was a big asset to this year's team, especially when he led the team alone during Bill Sylvester's absence. Roland Woodruff was another fine scrapper under the boards and also played quite a lot last year. Then comes the boy with the eye, Halsy House, who has a tremendous one hand shot from outside. Dick Smith is a good all-around player both on offense and defense and can also drive very well from the outside. The rest of the boys, who filled in very well when called upon were Bob Al- dinger, Bob McElroy, Bob Clair, Phil Kennedy, Paul Meisel, Henry Guckes, and Jim Sylvester. BOB ALDINGER BOB CLAIR MR.
