Palqz' I'.fllH'ff'l'?l Mr, Kesterson, associate principal, re- turned to Senior High School this year. We had 'loaned' him to jarrett, and the faculty and students were happy to welcome him back. He works with great ease and poise and is always eager to co-operate and do more than his share. His untailing good humor, combined with his sound good judgment and quiet firmness, make him a fine leader. This year the band started off with a trip to Columbia. Missouri, to play during the half of the lVlUfKansas state football game along with twenty other bands from all over Missouri. A new idea was inaugurated when the SHS band exchanged concerts with the loplin High School band Our band was host to joplin members overnight after their concert IAVES p ROBERTSON here and in turn our organization was entertained by them. Plans for purchasing new uniforms were begun this year through the efforts ofa music parents' club organized by Mr james P. Important performances on the agenda for the orchestra this year were the Thanks giving, Christmas, and Easter assembly programs. regular assemblies, concerts for the junior high schools. special music at programs and dramatic productions. a concert for St Louis County band and orchestra members, and the Public Music Festival One of the highlights of the orchestras work was the trip to St Louis to give a con cert at one of the high schools there. While in St Louis, the members attended a concert by the St. Louis Symphony and were shown backstage afterwards to meet the conductor and several players in the symphony. Several students in the orchestra are members of the Springfield Civic Symphony This splendid organization has done much to add to their appreciation of great music, An outstanding event of the school year was the Public Schools Music Festival, April l4-l5fl6, ln addition to individual instrumental solos, duets, trios, quartets. the orchesa tra gave part of a program for all the music organizations at the S. M S fieldhouse This festival is usually considered a testing place for participants who are to enter the state con- test at Columbia, Missouri. The contest which is held early in May is considered the climax of the musical year. Soloists or groups who receive a one rating of excellence here are eligible for the Regional-National Contest. A group usually represents Springfield at these contests. A project of the whole music department was the sponsorship of a concert by the Wichita University Symphony. Profits of this concert and donations from parents helped to pay for costs of the St, Louis trip. A special class, advanced girls' glee club for juniors and seniors, is taught by Miss Dorothy Rathbone. The girls meet, as does the choir, every day for practice. They begin preparing num- bers at the first of the year to be given at various events. The groups sing with the choir in the Christmas assembly and do a very beautiful solo at the Easter assembly. The Clee Club takes part in the spring music festival, too. Although the group makes few public appearances, they will be remembered for the beauty of their singing. The class time offers an opportunity also for them to sing favorites of their own. Aside from singing, they listen to the recordings made by famous people in the field of music. Yes, America does actually sing when the Choir and the Clee Club combine to sing for our special assemblies.
