General language prob- lems and ettective expression, both written and oral, are emphasized. The study of literature is an im- portant phase ot these classes. V General Education, a successful course combin- ing English and social studies, has been a part of the curriculum of Senior High School since l94l-42. Emphasis is placed on oral and written English. Pupils in these classes have many opportunities for experi- ences in reading, writing, and speaking. Only sophomores and juniors may schedule for General Education. These classes meet for two hours a day with one teacher, who combines the work of the otherwise separate classes. Seniors may choose a specialized course in Eng- lish and are required to take civics. However, many seniors elect one of the five courses offered: English Vll-literature, English Vll-composition, journalism, debate, and business English. The English Department is headed by Miss Nellie Hofer. Other teachers in the group are Miss Helen McNeely, Mrs. Marie Young, Miss May Berry, Miss Mary Dunham, Miss Anna B. jefferson, Miss Edith Moore, Miss Helen Walker, Mrs. Virginia Woodring, and a newcomer during the second semester, Mrs. Audrey Lichlyter.
