Each year the Springfield Frank B. l-ledges chapter ot the Quill and Scroll is made up ot students of junior or senior classification Whose scholastic standing must be in the upper one-third of their class. These students must have done superior work in vvriting, editing, or business management in the jour' nalistzc field, and must be a member of one of the publication staffs This year the Quill and Scroll is sponsoring the High Times Magazine, Publications HARRY L SUTTLE The l945 Resume is just another adventure in high school annual publications, The new ideas which have been conceived in the editing of this book have resulted both from a lack of experience with conventional techf nique and a desire to make the l945 Resume a distinctive yearbook. It was designed with the idea in mind to em- phasize the outstanding activities within our high school which makes our great school what it is, Though the theme of the book is Peace, its publication has been greatly handicapped by war, ln creating the Resume we have found real happiness in the reward which comes with the realization that we have created something worthy of filling a place in reminiscences of many of our student and faculty friends The staff hopes that in the years to come as you glance through the pages of this yearbook, happy mem- ories will be recalled. The story takes place in the Tower of London in the l6th Century Colonel Fairfax, a prisoner doomed to die, has been put there by scheming relatives. He marries Elsie, companion ofa pester, so his money will not go to his relatives. When the time for execution arrives, Fairfax is miss- ing. lack Point, the iester, broods over his loss of Elsie Wilfred, the iailer, is sad because the citizens blame him for the Colonel's escape. A plot involves wherein Wilfred fires a shot and Point says he saw Fairfax killed Fairfax, while in disguise, woos Elsie and wins her love. lt is a very unhappy situation for her. Phoebe. who loved Fairfax, betrays him to Wilfred. Knowing Wilfred loves her, Phoebe agrees to marry him to keep the secret. A reprieve arrives for Fairfax, and Elsie finds that he and the man she loves are the same person. Point dies of a broken heart. ln scenery, music, lighting and costuming, The Yeoman of the Guard was most pretentious. i'.2 QPR llvljl IELD, NHL ur. ,..f f l 1 H1 in L, 4.1 IQTSQ- V n , Wm . However, under the excellent leadership ot coaches, Howard Blair and Bob Vanatta, the Bulldogs came through the season with a record of five wins and three losses, losing only to letter- son City, Wyandotte, and joplin. The last was lost by a narrow margin of one touchdown which loplin gained in the third quarter of the Thanksgiving game. The honorary captains of the l944 season were Cecil Cashner and Bill DeWitt. Under the leadership ot these two popular athletes our team was led into an enviable place among the athletic activities. 72 x, fi'-T l945 Cagemen Standing -Herb Weston, Gerald jinks, Doyle Freeman, Paul Hughes, Bob Umphries Sitting- -Milton Thompson, Preston Ward, Coach Vanatta, john Fairman, Bill Birkenback, Bill Malone With a pre-season outlook that beamed with a possible and probable championship. the Springfield basketball team finished the race in splendid style Coach Vanatta, the Napoleon of the indoor game, spent every effort in building a team for the glory of our school, ln the thirtyathree games played by our team. we won thirty and lost three.
