Zllnrewnrh Half a century ago there stood on this campus one small building-the Senior High School of Yesterday. Classes were small, no social or athletic organ- izations existedg and the variety of subjects and classroom equipment was very limited. The faculty included about seven teachers-that was fifty years ago. Today, we have a modern school-a com- pletely equipped and staffed institution of learning with a large student body, and our pupils take part in all phases of school life. Thus, to compare our school activities of today-I9-43-with those of yesterday-l893, we have chosen as the theme of our book the Colden Anniversary of our School of Yesterday, I I gf HESUU lilwr Zleinnk nf Springfivlh Bigh Qrhnnl Qpringfivlh, iliizsnuri, Hnlumr 35 L. Ah, WEST ENTRANCE 1893 ln the school year of 1942 1943 SHS commemorated its fitti th anniversary In 1893 the halls ot learning for high school students consisted of the west end of our present main building At the time only one out of every sixty-nine of Springtields population attended high school. During its fifty years of existence, SHS has increased its volume and type of equipment eight times1 each time recognizing the fact that what is useful tor one person is of no use for anotherg and what was sound educaa tion in one period of our history is too ancient for the next generation. The most obvious changes in the school are physical. In 1892, twelve classrooms and an auditorium housed a student body ot 320. In 1943, eight buildings housed 2300 students. ln 1893 the number ot graduates was one compared with the 611 of 1943. Not as obvious, but ot much greater ima portance has been the change in reasons for an education. ln 1893 the majority of the students who attended high school were those with plans of becoming doctors or lawyers or clergymen. Now, the reasons tor conf tinuing with one's education are numerous. i 4 S33 X i I- JT' Min: wwe ADMINISTRATION FacuIty ORGANIZATIONS Activities SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVES Memories SENIORS lllnr Qvruirv 'XNK VEDT N11 r r F rm an Frlcn Wlth reverence respect and devotcd frrcndshup vvc thc Staff dedlcate thus Resume of l943 to a teacher who wall long be rernembcred and loved by all To one who gave unturlngly of has tame and energy who had a genurne loyalty to the Sensor Hugh School who rm pressed all by hrs slncerrty of purpose who had a far reachrng lnfluence for good on has puplls and on the cornrnunlty who had a personal frrendly Interest an every pupll and faculty rnernber and to one who had such frrmness rn the rlght we wash to rnake thus dedrcatuon Srnce has retnrement the students and faculty have keenly mnssed thus beloved Instructor who rs a klndly man always wulllng to help a student solve a personal drftlculty For a quarter of a century B Frank West has been mlnlster scholar teacher farmer and friend our cholce for thus honor ,v U sau, lf., oi .f , 'Cs t .5-g'.',,o s ' ,a 1,4 f'l'h 72' ' 'Q.'.' It is not without regret that we note their absence, for they have been an important asset in helping us to attain our ideals of education. Sergeant Richard Reed is now serving in New C-uinea and has written several interest- ing and helpful letters to the students which reflect his cheering personality. Lieutenant Charles White is a man who always radiates happiness. This trait of char- acter has made him a great favorite with the students. Captain Harry Kirkpatrick, electricity in- structor, is now serving in India with the Corps of Engineers. lvlaior Homer Ford is another of our expert electricity teachers and his title in itself reflects his ability. Mr. john T. Byers is a sergeant in the Tank Corps. Mr. Byers, of indian ancestry. is the contribution of the science department to the war effort. A more thoroughly capable gift would be indeed hard to find. Mr. Truman C, Hardin, mechanical draw- ing teacher, is now serving as petty officer in the U. S. Coast Guard. On a recent visit he related interesting experiences pertaining to his convoy duties. Mr, Robert Denney is the second navy man among the group. He is stationed at Annapolis for training as an ensign in his branch of the service. Sergeant DeCroff Platte is now serving at the lefferson Barracks reception center in St, Louis He is always willing to see the students viewpoint. The day is pleasantly anticipated when our Honor faculty members will once more be among the students of SHS. 26 TRUMAN C HARDIN, A R HOMER T. FORD, BS ROBERT 1, DENNEY, BS. Df CROP? This year the fighting Bulldogs had one of the best teams and one of the toughest schedules in the history of the sport at S. H. S, The Bulldogs added the T formation to their popular Notre Dame system, Strange as it seems, the T formation was first used in some of the earliest games.
