The new auditorium is a boon for such a program, for it will continue to provide innumerable opportunities for all types of programs, as well as for group meetings. Plans are also being made to equip one of the former cafeteria rooms as a recreation room next fall to serve for small parties and group gatherings before and after school and during the noon hour. It is hoped this room will also lend itself to informal class programs during the school day. An opportunity for a flexible period within the school day, to accommodate pupil groups when they find a common interest which they wish to pursue further than the limits of the classroom program permit, is offered by the new schedule. These three new factorse- the auditorium, the recreation room, and the activity period - should do much to round out the excellent program already provided by our various school departments and our activity ticket fund. Mr, Ryden is their enthusiastic sponsor. The first class event was their party, and it proved one ot the gayest affairs of the year, The sophomores early displayed their school spirit by surpassing the other classes in the number of activity tickets purchased. Throughout the year they have given their loyal sup' port to all school activities--sports, dramatics, debate. music, school parties, stunt nights, and student government. 62 SOP?-lON4ORE CLASS Among the sophomore athletes are the George tvvins, Walter and joe, Bill Allison, jim Davidson. Clyde Wyckoff, and Cene Tripp, who has the dubious honor of being the only basketball player to shoot at the wrong basket and nearly make it. Carol Lahar proved her dramatic ability by her suc- cess in the role of Maud in the all school play. Ladies in Waiting. Richard Mason and several others have given evidence ot their ability. and much can be expected of them in the future. Fifty sophomores showed their interest in debate by working on the national debate subject, Among 63 Q- PH X those promising debaters were Betty Alice Long. Helen Morris, Doris lvlongold, and limmie Anderson, who won a scholarship at the Bolivar Debate Tourna- ment. Among the many musical sophomores we might mention Bill Prater in the band, Elizabeth Rehorn in both band and orchestra, and Bobb Wilhoit and Catherine Moon in the glee clubs. One of the best fields tor the display of school spirit is the student government, Carl Irwin has been most etticient in conducting the pop stand, Bob Stewart in the Senate, Pat lVlcCuffin, Charles Ermes, Phil Brock and Frances johnson of the l-louse ot Repre- sentatives can always be depended on for more than their share ot leadership. 6-l SOPHOMORE CLASS THE PEAK OF EDUCATION bi ,1 -v-, 'N x X .1 . xx! , -1 x. Many of the athletes are first year men, so Coach john Phillips has depended largely on Captain james Sawyer and Donald Eagle- burger who are featured in the lZO-yard high hurdle and the ZOO-yard low hurdle, the pole vault, and the broad jump. john Quinn, a versatile athlete, stars as a distance runner, in the 880 and the mile runs. Prominent athletes participate in the half-mile, mile, and medley relays. Thirty-two boys were entered in the Oarkamo track and field meet at State Teachers College this spring to defend their class A title. The last event of the season was the State meet at Columbia. While many outstanding track men will graduate, there will still be a large amount of good material that Coach john Phillips can use next year. 76 kx. If . A A ' J Q ,-, K .X- ' . x f . 'X X xr . Whatever the occasion, we find these spirited people ready to do their best. They have played at tootf ball and basketball games, and have taken part in city parades, This year the band is composed of 84 boys and lZ girls. The group deserves much credit. for. by practicing before school, each member has managed to carry a full schedule. THE BAND ON PARADE STACEHAND5 VIEW OF OUR NEW AUDlTORlUM The new auditorium is the starting point of a new era in the dramatics program ot Senior l-ligh The larger and more coma plete stage will afford a better chance for training amateur actors, student directors, and technicians. The use ot the large-scale lighting system will train students in the use ot stage lighting, and the manipulation of backdrops, curtains and stage-sets. These will require from two to tive student stagehands. Besides the direct work connected with play production, the presentation of class assemblies will tend to increase interest in the dramatics classes. A great variety ot talent will be brought out in these assemblies, ln the words of lvliss Helen johnson, dramatics teacher, The new auditorium should stimulate a greater interest in dramatics in general: adequately rehearsed and well presented programs should arouse an audience interest which will result in increased student participation in school activities IOP -- lllllllllll Thc Dramatlcs Dcpart mcnt has gavcn a numbcr ot hughly successful plays thus year Owing to thc abundancc I capabl s thc cast of La rcs IH Wantung consustcd cn rcy of gurl Anot cr play Thc Wary Ouarry ack Crumlcy and Kathcrune Busgg who sup p rtcd thc pr ncupals Dorls Day and Bull Malettc The thnrd and last produc taon was thc sensor play Stage Door whuch gavc many would be actors and actresses a chance and was proclanmed the sea sons hat Dons Day Bull Malette and Sue Sand ford were guven hugh pranse for thenr perform ances Scyeral smallcr plays werc gnyen by thc Drama were The Tenth Word At Candlellght Tame and Mary ot Scotland Wc owe our success to Mnss Helen johnson our versatule and ener getuc teacher ot Dramatucs and Speech HELEN IOI-INSON LADIES IN WAITING Mury Forrest M Adams Martha Ruth Schcllhardt Roth Frceman Curol Lahar Rostmary Brandt lox Aust n Mary lean Foltor- lam Wtlson Norma Lee Dacy lOa 1 L V I 7 1 5 1 ' - I O LJ I Slrl ' I ' d ' Q E - A H - 1 J 4 ti HI s. hr D 1 revealed to os the talents tncs classes Among these of I H O J I I ' 'I 'lv ' 1 J . During the summer ot l938 the old auditorium, which had been in use since l893, was torn out of the west wing Only seniors now remember the old auditorium but thousands of students in the years to come will remember and be proud of the new one which has taken its places Our new auditorium is a beautiful example of rnodernistic architecture, The massive columns, balconies, iron grille work, and marble lobby make it a building to be proud of On entering the auditorium proper, one is delighted with the total effect. The pink walls, ' 1 ft cream ceiling and trimming, wine red draperies, and beige stage drapcries, produce a so quiet atmosphere, The lighting system alone would be enough to hold an audience spell- bound for the duration of a program, The completion ot the auditorium was eagerly antici- pated throughout the year and the students were glad that it was finished in time tor several assemblies, forums, and the senior class play.
