3 .Toreworo HE STORY GOES: A gardener thought to learn how to garden better by enduring through a season himself the growing pains of such as he had tended. When the days had passed, Now,7' he said, yall labor that I do in my tended plot will bring more blossoming than before, having put myself to growing to be better able to help growth about mefi But in his pride he had not endured all that growth means-all that growth sometimes is. So even while he made his tools fit and another season came, a just providence, or some such Head Gar- dener, forcec. him into further growing by making him helpless in his hands, without use of his feet, and voiceless. All of which seem handi- caps to gardening. This is death, not growthf' he said. He would have tended his plot with tools made fit. And he saw them all-the flowers and things he would have grown-as blossoming and fruit of other hands than his. But in due course the gardener went somewhere or to heaven, and spread muck, or did something about the gardens there. And out of the soil he mucked came fruit and blossoming-work of his own hands. Often as he delved in his tended plot, wherever that was, he had remembering visions. And these came to him also when he rested hot noons and cool day-ends, these rememberings, while he turned pages of his planting-books and resume of gardening days in that other place. And no matter how fair the flowers or fine the fruit coming of his toil there in the plot before him, always the finest and fairest seemed those he had wished to grow among and help grow that season of his affliction--they seeming eager for his hand, his tools seeming fit. Thus it was that what appeared to the gardener to be his best work really was not his at all except as memories of hopes that he had had of grow- ing through his best days with those whose faces shone in the last resume of those gardening times in that other place-the story goes.
