In 1 the year 1893 Springfield's first l I g real High School building was com- , l pleted. An imposing structure 7 5 costing 848,000 and, as you know, 1 I 1 1 i l l , centrally located to accommodate y the youths of both, north and south town. So numerous were 1 the rooms and so large that many ! AT- 3 were vacant for the want of stu- +w - Q dents. 1 Strange, but true, in a very few years these once spacious halls 'became too small. Crowded was every corner and a great need of class-rooms pre- vailed. So fast did the number of students increase that in 1907 Springfield was forced to build an east addition, or what is now known as the Middle Building, in which to educate its coming citizens. H The 325,000 spent for this made possible your first study hall and gymnasium, as well as homes for the roomless teachers and pupils. I I l l l l l 4 w l The curriculum of the High Schoolstudents has broadened great- ly in the past seven years. Your grandparents, even your own mother and father, during their High School life, knew nothing of taking Domestic Science, Manual Training or Physical Training, these are products of twentieth century life. So be proud that your school has kept up with the age and with 575,000 has finished a fire-proof and especially constructed building to accommodate the pursuits of these newer subjects. Do you realize that your school has now one of the largest and most complete gymnasiums of Springfield, that the heat- ing plant built for your comfort cost S25,000g that the halls you tread daily represent 3S146,000, and that the earth on which these noble structures stand was bought for S22,000?
