In 1 the year 1893 Springfield's first l I g real High School building was com- , l pleted. An imposing structure 7 5 costing 848,000 and, as you know, 1 I 1 1 i l l , centrally located to accommodate y the youths of both, north and south town. So numerous were 1 the rooms and so large that many ! AT- 3 were vacant for the want of stu- +w - Q dents. 1 Strange, but true, in a very few years these once spacious halls 'became too small. Crowded was every corner and a great need of class-rooms pre- vailed. So fast did the number of students increase that in 1907 Springfield was forced to build an east addition, or what is now known as the Middle Building, in which to educate its coming citizens. H The 325,000 spent for this made possible your first study hall and gymnasium, as well as homes for the roomless teachers and pupils. I I l l l l l 4 w l The curriculum of the High Schoolstudents has broadened great- ly in the past seven years. Your grandparents, even your own mother and father, during their High School life, knew nothing of taking Domestic Science, Manual Training or Physical Training, these are products of twentieth century life. So be proud that your school has kept up with the age and with 575,000 has finished a fire-proof and especially constructed building to accommodate the pursuits of these newer subjects. Do you realize that your school has now one of the largest and most complete gymnasiums of Springfield, that the heat- ing plant built for your comfort cost S25,000g that the halls you tread daily represent 3S146,000, and that the earth on which these noble structures stand was bought for S22,000? The scheme is to go to a small town and live very quietly for one year. The theory upon which the pursuit is conducted is that in a small town there is at least one girl who has a fortune. All the young men who are worth while move away to larger cities to make their fortunes, but the poor girls have to remain behind, and those who are really above the average are forced to remain single, because they will not marry the riff-raff which remains, according to the theorists. This leaves Duncan with a clear field in any town which he selects. - Duncan's experiences prove the theory. The village banker's daughter really falls in love with him, and in accordance with expectations, it is actually she who proposes before the end of the year. But there is no such sordid. end to the tale. It has been a part of the program that Nat should work during his year of residence in the village. He has found that work is really interesting, and brings its own rewards. He has be- come a successful business man while endeavoring to win an easy fortune, and at the same time he has found the girl who can make him happy, and it does not happen to be the girl with the fortune. - CAST OF CHARACTERS Nathaniel Duncan, Fortune Hunter .............. H 'H H - 1 9 1 5 - Review of Foot-Ball ,Season QWING to peculiar conditions the 1914 Foot-ball Season at Springfield High was possibly less successful than we have enjoyed during the past several years. Two factors contributed to this end. In the first place, very few strictly high school teams were to be found in South- west Missouri, Aurora, Carthage and Jop- lin being the only eligible ones within scheduling distance of Springfield. As usual a number of the smaller towns were represented by independent teams, but it has been the policy of our school not to recognize such organizations. Conse- quently when Joplin High refused us a place on their schedule, for financial reasons, we had few opportunities left for games. In the second place, ithe candidates that responded to the call for practice were with few exceptions very light and absolutely inexperienced. But three boys on the squad had ever played any foot-ball and with the majority of the youngsters it was a first attempt to do something in athletics. The initial contest of the season was staged October 15th with the Alumni, a duel game. The high school players fought desperately all the way in this game, but they were outweighed twenty pounds per man and knew too little foot-ball to stop the line plunges of the Alumni backs- Aurora High appeared on our field Oc- tober Slst. The lads from the mining town had a considerable advantage in weight and experience, but the speed and accurate tackling of the home crew almost overcame this advantage. Aurora's touch- down in the first quarter came on line plunges after Springfield failed to kick. In the second period Springfield worked the ball to Aurora's 40-yard line where quarter-back, Bennett, hurled a short for- ward pass to Jimmy Moore at right end and the little blonde boy fought his way through the visiting team for a touch- down. A field goal from the 30-yard line gave Aurora three needed points in the' 3d quarter. Springfield came back strong in the final session and was rush'ing the ball toward Aurora's line when a poorly exe- cuted forward pass fell into the hands of an Aurora back and he was away for a touchdown. The frequent calls for time out from the miners plainly showed the Sixty superior physical condition of the boys from High and with a seasoning game or two preceding this contest, victory should have been ours. Capt. Williams, Fellini, Matthews and Moore played the best game for Springfield, while Loy and McPherson performed well for Aurora. Superior weight and knowledge of the game enabled the Drury Freshmen to win from us November 13th. Bennett, Crooks, Raper and Call were the Red and Black's strongest representatives in this contest. Carroll and Fyan play ed good ball for Drury. One redeeming feature of the season was the big win from Carthage on the local field November 21st. The Visitors opened the game with line plunges which almost swept our players off their feet. They lost the ball, however, on Spring- field's 10-yard line and Fellini at full, taking the oval on a fake play off tackle, picked his way through the opposing play- ers and raced 90 yards for the first touch- down. Carthage scored later in the first quarter when Springfield fumbled. With the score 7 to 7 the locals started a series of forward passes in the 3d quarter that seemed to bewilder the Jasper County lads. Capt. Williams at half, and Fellini at full, carried the ball frequently and far. The final period was all for Springfield, Ben- nett, Fellini and Moore making long gains before being downed. Moore's punting was spectacular, his kicks averaging bet- ter than 40 yards. Fellini carried the ball for four touchdowns, the Carthage boys being unable to tackle him when he was once under way. Bennett handled the team well at quarter and with Capt. Wil- liams offered an interference that Car- thage could not get by. In the line, Matthews at tackle and Saxe at end played brilliantly. Capt. Ross, the visiting center, was the mainstay of his aggregation. Another feature of the Foot-ball season to which our students point with pride is the fact that Alex. Fellini, end and full- back, whose work was of the stellar variety in every game, was given the position at right end on the All Missouri High School Team. This well deserved honor coming to one of our boys along with the splendid victory over Carthage, brought a fitting close' to the Foot-ball year. SC H OO L XSS 'Q 1 Q 1 5 'KX 454 - -E-V - -i f Toys' Baskei-Ball Review CCORDIN G to the basket-ball critics of Southwest Missouri Springfield High has been represented, during the past season, by one of the best teams in the history of the school and by far the strongest High School aggregation in this section of the state. It is a lamentable fact that no state tournament is held in Missouri, for we believe the Red and Black combination would have had perhaps the best opportunity in a number of years to win the state championship. . . As the matter stands we' have met the best high school teams that were in scheduling distance of Springfield and have defeated them in every case with ease. More than this, we have won four contests out of five played with college teams. In fact the only team that de- feated us during the season was the Springfield Y. M. C. A., a five consisting of former college and university stars. 1 Among the boys that wore the Red, and Black during the 1914-15 season, there was no individual player that stood head and shoulders above the rest in basket- ball ability. There was no forward that counted the greatest number of field goals in each game or no guard that held his opponent to the fewest number of baskets in each contest. On the other hand, it was a situation where team play had been perfected until the five worked with the accuracy and precision of a well oiled and perfect piece of machinery. Each man on the team be- ing an important factor in every play. Herschel Bennett, captain and guard of the 1914-1915 team, has led the five in a creditable manner. He is lightning fast, accurate in passing, sizes up the oppo- nents' play instantly, and secured as many field goals during the season as the for- ward pitted against him. Dewey Queen, at the other guard, secured and held his position by dint of hard work. Lacking the experience of the other men, -he made up for this defect by heady and consistent playing. ' At center Clyde Bearden tipped the ball away from every opponent. He was the best defensive center that has played in the section for several years and could shoot baskets from any part of the floor. At the forward positions, Snavely and Call were a pair that would make the ordinary college team in a walk. Snavely was best under the basket, averaging seven goals per game. His sensational basket-shooting, coupled with the superior floor work of Call, was a combination not to be beaten. These men are iboth Seniors and will be hard to replace next year. ' Substitutes of A-1 calibre are nearly al- ways a big factor in any season, and this one was no exception at Springfield High. Leonard Murrell, George Humphreys and Frank Crooks were the three men used in this capacity in the season just past and they proved to be so nearly on a par with the first string men that it weakened the team very little to send them in at any time. No coach was ever supplied with more dependable material in the Way of substitutes. These men should make next year's team in easy fashion. The championship of Southwest Mis- souri is indeed a fitting tribute to be given to such a team. Sixty-Fi: U SPRINGFIELD ' U SPRINGFIELD 1 NW SCHQO1-MX! Giirls' Basket-Ball Review S PRINGFIELD HIGH SCHOOL has . been represented in past years by some splendid girls' basket-ball teams, but without doubt the team which represented our institution in this department during the past season was the best of them all. A glance at the record will show that our girls played a schedule of nine games, which included the strongest college and high school teams to be found .in Southwest Missouri this year or in several years past. Three of the hardest games of the season were played on foreign courts, but the Red and Black combination were consistent performers and their team play seemed just as puzzling on the midget courts away from home as in the big gym at High. Accurate team Work put Springfield in the lead in every game of the season and kept them there till the last whistle. The championship of Southwest Missouri comes to us without a protest, all schools in this section conceding the superiority of the combination from S. H. S. We feel confident that state champion- ship honors were due us and had it been at all possible we would have been glad to meet any team that was a claimant of the state title. Jo Pierce, who for the last three years has been an excellent performer on the basket-ball court at High, captained the 1914-15 team. Her average of six goals Sixty-Eight per game shows what luck the strongest guards in this section had when playing against her, and classes her as the best forward in the State of Missouri. ' Millie Wilkerson and Orene Beatie alter- nated at the other forward. Although this was their first real basket-ball experience, either made a splendid running mate for Captain Pierce. Beatie developed into a splendid basket-tosser and Wilkerson had few equals when it came to floor work. Mary N ee scored her second year at the pivotal position and tipped the ball away from every opponent. She was the best offensive center in this section. p As runing center, Elizabeth Yarbrough, playing her first season, put up a passing game that would have done credit to a player of several years' experience. The Nee-Yarbrough combination improved steadily and in the last games they were covering the floor in ine style. 'Dorothy Skinner and May Mitchell formed the main defense for the Red and Black machine, and the record of twelve Held goals in nine games shows what a wonderful defense this must have been. The substitutes of the season were Jennie Tindall, Pansy Haverly and Augus- tine Coots. These girls are all good play- ers and contributed a great deal toward the making of the championship team. . Last season was the first time in years that High had put out a base-ball squad and the mater- ial that presented itself showed that all the school needed to put it on the base-ball map was someone to start the ball rolling. Rainy weather will not stop the practice of the boys this year, for as soon as the basket-ball tossers vacate the gymnasium it will be changed into an indoor base-ball court. Not a few good men were lost last year by graduation, namely, Benson, Ekbert, Irwin, Thompson, Barrett, Pipkin and Williams, but Mr. Criss is out scouting for new finds and feels confident that the ranks can easily be filled by promising material. Games will be scheduled with all the leading high schools in Southwest Mis- souri, and probably a few above our class. Everyone is confident that Old High will have a few more scalps hanging in her tepee at the close of the season. l i l 1 fm-'11 :Iii X - - . -' . f 'V 5135 , 77--4,slrT lg3.7l'7 f A V .., L .,: ,. :..,.-.f Base-Ball Squad sixty-Nin V 5 1 l 4 l w ll w i 3 1 P F 1 l I 5, A l 'I ,A l ll r g spmucnuo Q M SCHOOL V9 is A y SPRINGFIELD 1 SCHOOL' ' S .11. 1 ' ' O..1O,.. How canst thou, from Olympus' airy height The dense and dingy darkness of this low Realm penetrate? Lay bare thy schemes, and guide This quill thy hidden knowledge to reveal. There's toward the south and west a well known state, Missoures, great in power and wealth, and rich In resources, a state renowned for fame Through all the world. Within the farther part Of this great state, a gay and sunny land Doth lie, by sturdy hills enclosed, a land Beloved by all the gods, yet sacred though To Ceres, and Ozarcus is the name. 'Tis here a city broad, from dusky vale, Doth rise to deck the highest hill, shelt'ring A fair and happy tribe, yet iwise and skilled. Arpagathus of this tribe was a lad Of noble birth, rthe only son of him, A coiner one most learned and true. Beneath Apollo's glancing rays, sweet scented herbs Among, surrounded by the brooks and trees This youth his life began. He favored grew By her who now alone the thunderbolts Of Jove, doth wield. A student he became, Yet fair in face and mien. Arpagathus fthe -bridge did cross that leads From Ward to High, the Hall he entered in, And donned a toga white fwith bands of green. Before the algebraic shrine, he first Eighty-Six ' - His homage paid in many a hard spent hour, And by his toil at last he gained a nod From her, the priestess stern. Incense he burned To Latin verbs and nouns and adjectives, And breathing deep the fumes, inhaled all The forms. With slow and reverent step he crossed The sacred English island, guided by V A clever sage, admired for his wit, 'Twas here his greatest treasures were attained, Of classics rich and rare, of prose and poems. Then, too, from the illustrious oracle Of history he learned of Egypt, Rome And Greece. He wiser grew, was more 'beloved By all the Hall's most potent ones. The Fates Ev'n gave as his reward a seal, the stamp Of Excellent And four full quarters thus, He spent in undisturbed betterment. 'Twas then a change came o'er the lad, those bands Of green were laid aside, in purest white He stood revealed, a crown around his brow That glitt'ring in its jewels, sparkled, Sophomore Alas, 'tis not for mortals thus to be! The perfect is for none to see, until Hehconqueror of the gross is proven. The queen Of gods, relentless Juno, now had watched With jealous glance, for many a moon, the boy's Advance. Her look did turn to hate, revenge She craved against the one whose honors had Increased to rise beyond her Hebe's gifts. A plot she formed, a scheme contrived that filled Her evermindful heart with glee. At once Frivolity she called, and pouring forth Her plans she changed the frisky sprite-dark hair, Quaint eyes, and yes, a mouth+O maiden most Bewitching, and with Ate for her name. Was it a shaft dropped by the sun from heav'n? Or did a faery quickly flitter by? Arpagathus had raised his eyes to see, A dimpled smile, Ate's. She hurried on. He knew not where-Cupid well armed behind Him stood-he followed her, the path forgot, The shrines passed by, the temples entered not. In search of such another smile on, on He went. His richest gifts at her feetlayg His thoughts were turned not from her way, his time Was spent to grant her wish. On, on, a smile, , A smile to gain. The months slipped by, the time Arrived for Sophomores, Juniors to become. He crept through some way, knew not how. Junior He was supposed to be, yet really just A seeker of one smile. , The shrines and wisdom's cherished altars dim, Neglect do not endure unvrecompensed. Athena, knowing notiof Juno's tricks, A counsel called of greatest ones, 'to meet In solemn form. Redress of wrongs received From this lad's carelessness, she duly asked. Commands and rules were formed, restrictions made Against such harms and injuries. They chose A messenger who through this Hall did keep His course, these orders to enforce. Arpagathus heeded not the rules, heard not Commands or laws, not ev'n a Pass, V. P., Or Poor, could draw him from the search of that One smile, Ate's. A grasp-was it his? Had He found it at last? O thou moment of The wildest joy! It was-No! Where had it Flown ?-Fickleness of youth, Ate has given Her smile to another. Mourn not, grieve not, the lad -was wisernfar For having felt the sting of sorrow's prick. More thoughtful he, better prepared to wear His cap and gown of sombrest gray, for now A :Senior staid he had become, with ills Repaid and favor found by roughest toil And constant strife. Victory won-a braver Man. Ev'n to this day, if you should pass through that Fair vale, Ozarcus, you might see a tomb, The pride of his son's sons, on which is carved The simple phrase, UARPAGATHUS VICTOR. So weary not your minds over the lines Above, and trouble not your memory For names unknown, if any such there be.
