A 9 ,sabeqfgxg 43: yy ad 4 THE '4 3 ,f 7555 kg -4954 3 'wk HE football season of l9l2 was the most successful in recent years for the Y 1 Center Street aggregat The ou look at the begmmng of the season was very discouraging as most of the old play ers had gone but there was a wealth of new matenal-all anxious to make a place on the team lt is to be regretted that most men wait until their Senior year to try for the team By so doing they lose the valuable expenence gained by playing on the subs for a year or two and are only serviceable to the team for one season This is the reason we are not more successful at the beginning of the season The small score made against the Alumni and the defeat by Aurora can easily be ac counted for by lack of expenence Most of the men were playing their first football and they were playing against experienced men The men in these games had not yet found their real positions and consequently present ed a weak front to their opponents. The de feat at the hands of Marshfield was due en trrely to over confidence and lack of pep It certainly cannot be attnbuted to superior football on the part of the Marshfield team The real strength of the team can be seen only in the game with Carthage ln this game they played real football every man doing his part until a total of 34 to 0 was registered A brief individual summary follows The pivotal position on the team was filled by Brown for the first two games, but he was later shifted to the back field on account of his plunging ability. Dunng the remaining games the keystone job was held by Stung Meyers. Maggie played good con sistent ball all through the season. particularly at Mountain Grove, and he will be a valuable man in the same place for l9l 3. Bennett, who had learned the rudiments of the game last year, and had played football on paper all summer, was back as left guard. Fatty surely made good and was a seven days' wonder to the football fans in the small towns. Without doubt he will be a valuable man for next year. Delp who played right guard was a find of the season 'Truck was there with bells every time the ball went through the nght side of the line and in most games he was able to account for at least two opposing players As a reward of ment 'Truck will captain the l9l 3 team Smith at tackle proved to be another find of real worth Always in the game with plenty of pep he outplayed every opposing tackle and seemed to have the edge on the big Drury men sent against him He excelled in carrying the ball and could always be counted on to make a wagon road through the defensive line Pipkin started the season at half back but was later shifted to tackle Red played a star game all through the season and was a fiend at running with the ball Gittyburg Brooke the human skeleton held down the yob at nght end This Job fell to Gltty by nght of mhentance his brother Paul having filled It the two previous years We are glad to say that the family honor was upheld in a creditable manner as Brooke seldom failed on the forward pass and spoiled a big majority of the plays sent against him We are sorry to lose Gitty as there has been a Brooke on the H S team since l906 The other wing was held by Aurand during the latter part of the season As this was his first year in the game he had some difficulty in getting placed, first trying at tackle but later found his real place at end Bud put up a great game all the year, being one of the most faithful and consistent men on the team Baldwin, at quarter. ran the team all through the season. His experience in foot ball enabled him to pick the weak spots in the opposing team, and to send the right plays against them. His best work was done in the Carthage game and It was a fitting close for his three years of High School football. Notwithstanding the phenoms discovered in the line, the back field was not lacking in this respect. At left half Watkins played a brilliant game after hitting his pace. Tommy ' . ..' vi. v A .
