SEPTEMBER School Brings with it New Faces and The month of September, filled with the excitement of starting school again, brought with it many new faces and changes. “Welcome to Springfield State Pen,” was the common joke used by the stu- dents to describe the new fence that had been put up around the school over the summer. Despite the “‘shut-in’’ look it gave the school - the fence gave SHS a more secure and safe campus. Safe from vandalism and conspiring Rival Colts! Hello Week With the welcome arrival of the in- coming freshmen, came the honor of being the largest school in Lane County. Changes The activities of Hello Week began the school year with a festive start. The annual events sponsored by the Rallies included such merry-making as: Hat day, Overall day, Blue White day, Sat- urday Night Live day, and Lick ’em day. The week was topped off by a Fall Sports pep assembly encouraging sup- port for the football, cross-country, vol- leyball and gymnastics teams. The first dance of the year sparked new ro- mances and friendships that Friday, which insured a very interesting next few months to come. Half-Time Shows During the next two weeks of Septem- ber, the SHS Miller Marching Band was making preparations for a half-time show at the U of O Michigan football game on September 20 as well as for the forthcoming home football games at Silke Field. The band represented Springfield superbly by their fine perfor- mances amidst the mud and rain of a typical September season. The rain wasn’t the only thing to put a damper on September. The weekend before school started, two SHS stu- dents were involved in an accident that caused the death of one and many months of hospitalization for the other. Steve Stribling, a junior at SHS, was killed in the accident and Todd Skinner, also a junior, was seriously injured. Though the accident was taken quite somberly by the student body, the closeness of it brought about a keen sense of unity. September sped by quickly easing its way into a normal routine as students adjusted to their schedules and teach- ers, and teachers in turn adjusted to their students.

OCTOBER Homecoming - Fall week and Halloween fun All the fun started in October with Fall Ts VERE ee Sb Sees Week and Homecoming activities in full — aor i swing. The Seniors sponsored a busy Fall week with lunch time competitions including the Spoon-On-A-String, Keg Wagon races, volleyball and the cli- mactic Tug-of-War. Friday ended the competition with a victory for the Senior class. A combined lunch provided time for court yard capers and voting for the homecoming court. The Princess’ and their escorts were ushered into the game Friday in classic convertibles. The queen for 1980 was announced that night at the game, her court consisted of two freshman, sophomores and junior princesses and five other senior prin- cesses.
