For the first semester there was a staff of five people, none of whom were seniors. There was one senior who was originally going to be on yearbook staff, but because of schedule conflicts, had to work during newspaper class. She ended up working on the Sentinel more than anything else. To make a long story short, a new staff was needed. A plea went out to some concerned people and a new staff was put together at the semester break in January. The question was raised, why would anyone in his right mind go to the trouble of putting together a yearbook? To me the answer is clear. A yearbook is a pictorial condensement of the events and activities that made the year what it was. Later you can look at it and remember what you did and the fun you had in high school. We did it to give you, and ourselves, something to remember our year here. It was rather scary to undertake the responsibility of putting a whole book together in half a year, but as you can see, we succeeded. There were, the usual problems of figuring out how to put a page together and making deadlines, but problems are made to be solved and we did. Every member of the staff worked really hard and | want to thank them all. Its been a lot of fun to work with them. Get this year’s Miller Log NOW A note from the publisher MC patriarchs launch SHS annual Herbert Hansen and Walter Bailey may not be household names like Presi- dent George Washington or Springfield founder Elias Briggs. Still to Springfield High School publications, now operat- ing under the corporate name Miller communications, Hansen and Bailey will stand for all time as the patriarchs of the school yearbook and newspaper. According to best accounts available to the SHS archivist Hansen became editor of the first school yearbook when he was a sophomore in the 1912-13 school year. Unfortunately no copy of that introductory volume has yet been found. Hansen continued in his position for the next year to lead the publication of the 1914 yearbook simply titled “High School Annual.’’ The 64-page soft-cover edition was dedicated to Dis- trict School Superintendent Robert L. Kirk. A fellow classmate, junior Walter Bailey, was serving as student body president and as athletics editor for the annual. The next school year Hansen was elected student body president. Bailey was apparently looking for new horizons to conquer. The result of his leaderabi- lity and literary skill was a small 24-page magazine-like publication called ‘‘The Headlight’’ that was the first venture at Springfield High School to report the on- going news at the school. No other re- cord of ‘‘The Headlight’’ has yet been found. Bailey went on that year to edit the 1915 edition of the ‘Hight School Annual.’’ Orson Vaughn was selected to edit the 1916 edition. The name of the 1921 annual was changed to the ‘‘Maple Leaf’’ in recog- nition of the large maple trees on the grounds of the high school located be- tween “‘E”’ and ‘‘D”’ streets on Mill, pre- sent location of the district administra- tion building. The ‘“‘Maple Leaf’? grew to a hard- cover edition through the prosperity of the 1920s and apparently nearly died during the early days of the great de- pression. In 1942, when Springfield High School, moved to a new building on 10th and ‘‘H”’ streets, and away from the maple trees, the name was changed to its current title ‘‘Millers LOG’’. Editor of the first “‘LOG’’ was Jack Vaughn, son of 1916 editor Orson Vaughn. The school newspaper has gone through similar transformations. Apparently the ‘‘Headlight’’ did not survive. Reports indicate that in 1918 the journalistic efforts of SHS students Herbert Hansen Walter Bailey were directed towards writing a regular column that appeared in the then ‘‘Lane County Star’ in 1914. That column, ti- tled the ‘‘SHS Tattler’ apparently lasted until 1923 when in the fall the students took a shot at publishing their own newspaper again. Perhaps reflective of their zeal towards this task, the new pa- per was called the ‘‘Go-Getter.’’ The SHS archives have no copies of this publication, just references to it in the school yearbook. The same is true for the early editions of the “SENTINEL” current name of the SHS newspaper. The best information to date is from a reference in a 1938 ‘Maple Leaf’ that suggests the first vol- ume of the SENTINEL was published in the 1935-36 school year. It has re- mained ‘‘The student voice of Spring- field High School’? now for nearly 45 years. y i a Pat Albright, above, stepped down as advi- sor of the year book with the conclusion of this Millers LOG. IN REVIEW 1980-81 SEPTEMBER School Brings with it New Faces and The month of September, filled with the excitement of starting school again, brought with it many new faces and changes. “Welcome to Springfield State Pen,” was the common joke used by the stu- dents to describe the new fence that had been put up around the school over the summer. Despite the “‘shut-in’’ look it gave the school - the fence gave SHS a more secure and safe campus. Safe from vandalism and conspiring Rival Colts! Hello Week With the welcome arrival of the in- coming freshmen, came the honor of being the largest school in Lane County. Changes The activities of Hello Week began the school year with a festive start. The annual events sponsored by the Rallies included such merry-making as: Hat day, Overall day, Blue White day, Sat- urday Night Live day, and Lick ’em day. The week was topped off by a Fall Sports pep assembly encouraging sup- port for the football, cross-country, vol- leyball and gymnastics teams. The first dance of the year sparked new ro- mances and friendships that Friday, which insured a very interesting next few months to come. Half-Time Shows During the next two weeks of Septem- ber, the SHS Miller Marching Band was making preparations for a_ half-time show at the U of O Michigan football game on September 20 as well as for the forthcoming home football games at Silke Field. The band represented Springfield superbly by their fine perfor- mances amidst the mud and rain of a typical September season. The rain wasn’t the only thing to put a damper on September. The weekend before school started, two SHS stu- dents were involved in an accident that caused the death of one and many months of hospitalization for the other. Steve Stribling, a junior at SHS, was killed in the accident and Todd Skinner, also a junior, was seriously injured. Though the accident was taken quite somberly by the student body, the closeness of it brought about a keen sense of unity. September sped by quickly easing its way into a normal routine as students adjusted to their schedules and teach- ers, and teachers in turn adjusted to their students. mm —s A See kee Ee Se rm. ‘ Snell iN a nad ‘ See USANA WRN OCTOBER Homecoming - Fall week and Halloween fun All the fun started in October with Fall Ts VERE ee Sb Sees Week and Homecoming activities in full — aor i swing. Springfield took an active part in the elections. Although most of the students were too young to vote, a mock election throughout the school elected another term for President Carter. Springfield students lost out in the real election when President Reagan came out victorious. Local candidates came to visit in the resource rooms giv- ing students and teachers a better in- sight to local and state government. Another change came when the fall sports season ended and the winter sports began training full force. The girls and boys basketball teams sponsored a Donkey Basketball game to help pay for new shooting shirts; It was a hilarious success. Top Right: Senator Weaver makes his point. The first weeks were busily spent with the music department spreading around Christmas cheer. The marching band covered the streets of Springfield in the annual Springfield Christmas parade. Meanwhile the kaleidoscopes left traces of notes at the Eugene Mall. Pink slips came out, S.A.T. tests were taken by seniors, and a Christmas dance topped off the activities. Arena scheduling took place early in the month, A.C.T. tests were taken by Seniors and a winter pep assembly kept people busy. There was also a Valentines Sweet- heart Dance especially for the lovers of the school. District meets came for swimmers and wrestlers to end their successful season. The air filled with music to the sounds of the Band, and Choral Annual Spring Con- certs. Construction began on the new crafts building out by the woods shop. Construction classes completed their house on March 13 which was then moved to Thurston to be put up for sale. Friday the 13th brought good luck for some at the Friday the 13th dance. Se APRIL A beginning to an end Everyone knew that April was draw- ing close to the end of the year and the attitudes around the school showed it. The school musical ‘‘Music Man’’ opened in April and was a big success (of course). Intramural softball got off to a good start despite the radical weather. Rally and Hi-lite tryouts began although the actual tryouts weren’t held until May. Class elections were held the last day in April. There were concerts and festi- vals, a Bingo Night sponsored by the Boosters and Open House. The monthly S.A.T. tests were taken and advisee meetings planned for next year classes. For the Seniors it was also filled with the usual rush for last chance compe- tencies and credits. May ended the Spring Sports Seasons with districts meets and playoffs and brought with it potlucks, concerts Spring Week, and the Prom. Seniors set their Caps and began looking toward their futures and the nearing graduation, while the under- classmen looked only towards next year at SHS. The school musical ‘‘Music Man’”’ ended, Rally tryouts were held and the new rallies were picked for next year. The seniors were looking ahead to see what the future would bring but also, thinking about the memories they had been a part of the past three years. There was great excitement in the air; the last days before graduation. Every- one was acting kind of crazy knowing that they had made it through this part of their lives. These ‘‘Seniors’’ had been through a lot together. There had been many victories as well as many defeats. There were many friendships and memories they would never forget. Time capsule The school year 1980-81 was filled with much controversy, achievement, excite- ment, and as always, changes. Not only was there a new president elected, but the return of the Hostages from Iran brought much happiness to Americans. One of the greatest achievements of our country, was the successful test flight and return to earth the space shuttle “‘Columbia’’. But not only were there changes for the country, there were also many changes that have taken place right here in Springfield. Most of the controversy for the 1980-81 year at Springfield High was attributed to the addition of the fence. Students often mentioned the fact that SHS was turning into a prison. The start of a new decade brought many drastic changes in popular recreation. The disco era moved over for the very popular sound of New Wave Rock (Punk), and video games became the craze with Astroids leading the pack. Frustration ... The 1981 yearbook got off to a con- fused start. By the semester the staff had completely dissoved. Yet, all was not lost, with the assistance of Mr. Al- bright the 1981 staff was recreated. Most of the people were totally inexperi- enced, but willing to learn. Every one quickly became aware of deadlines as well as the confusion on the photo staff. By the close of the year we had gone through a lot of pain together; Monday Staff meetings, the photo rush, typers cramps, as well as handicapped editors who still tried to pull their own. Yet through it all we remained a team. Sentinel The Sentinel has had a successful year in putting out the twelve issues of the school newspaper. The success was due, in large, to the two advertising teams the paper had. Mark Brady and Jim Chenoweth (first semester), and Tony Thompson, Cheryl Hale and Chris Brown (second semes- ter) all did a good job in funding this years paper. The track program for the Springfield- Thurston Invitational was also put out by the Sentinel staff, who had to make a new production schedule, and work after school many nights to get it ready. Starting the year with 12 members the club has grown to 34. Next year looks even birghter. The clubs basic purpose is to promote chemistry. The members take trips to major universites to check out their facilities. They also sponsor speakers who come to REA 6 Sane SHS. More than anything the club seems to be a group of kids getting together and having a good time while they learn. National Honor Society oe The 1981 Honor Society is one of the largest yet, with 60 new members as well as over 30 pervious members. The 3 advisors Mrs. Downing, Mrs. Metzler and Mrs. Ohlendorf will have quite a job with this large group. Being chosen as a member of National Honor Society is | the highest honor SHS can bestow upon a student. The band also played at many pep as- semblies and at Victor Tom- seths homecoming. Band members are a composite of the best players from the whole school. Their fearless leaders were Dee Windom and Rod Rush. Hard work and dedication is the best way to describe the marching band this year. However the team had a few problems this season, as the record of 1-8 shows. Even with these problems they made vast improvements in all areas of com- petition. Seven outstanding members of the team have decided they want to contin- ue their football careers and use football scho larships and grants to help reduce cost of college. These players and the colleges which they are looking closest at are: John Runk-Linfield, McMinnville, Mark Crandall-Linfield, McMinnville, Ray Pearson-Linfield, McMinnville, Cody Hiestand-OlT, Klamath Falls, Butch Burlson-SOC, Ashlen. And the most sought after two-some by college coaches: Matt Chapman-OCE, Mon- mouth, Dan Ware-Has signed a four year full scholarship with Portland State. The Millers came very close to beat- ing the two choice teams that were ranked for state playoffs, North Bend and Sheldon. Springfield overran North Bend in overall rushing yeards. They went into overtime and were defeated 14-17. In the Springfield vs. Sheldon game, Springfield completely dominat- ed Sheldon for the first time in the histo- ry of S.H.S. Springfields goal for the fu- ture is to establish a foundation for the newcomers at Springfield High. J.V. Football The J.V. football team struggled through a 3-5-1 season. The team was plagued all season with numerous injur- ies. It was unlikely to see the team play any game without one or more players on the trainers roster. Highlights of the season were victo- ries over Marshfield, Willamette, Cot- tage Grove and a tough tie with chur- chill. The team consisted of mostly sopho- mores and a few select juniors, some of which will be great assets to next year’s varsity football team. Freshman Football The Freshman football team com- bined incoming 9th graders from Springfield and Hamlin Middle Schools. With this combined effort they ended the season with a 3-5-1 record. Ray Pearson (left) takes the ball around the end, against a surging North Eugene De- fense. Wins over South Eugene, Cottage Grove and North Bend, highlighted the season. The game that was most inspir- ing was 26-26 tie with crosstown rivals Thurston. The guys will be looking for- ward to a winning season next year. Team leaders were: Quarterback- Ross Sears, Fullback-Mark Reifsneider, and Halfback-Mel Hollister. Varsity quarterback Pete Acker (14) gives runningback Ray Pearson (44) a few words of encouragement. Dan Ware (26) follows Willie Brown’s block against North Eugene. Varsity volleyball falls one game short of state The girls Varsity volleyball team capped the season with 15 wins and losses. The experience of the team helped them come through with many victories. Their tough season ended with one game short of going to state. The most valuable player was Wendy Holcomb and the most inspirational was Kristi Carter. Next years team will be made up of the J.V. team and one re- turning varsity player, Karen Shelgren. J.V. Volleyball The J.V. volleyball team would out the season with the best record of all fall sports teams. The girls combined their efforts for a 15-0 season. The power of this team proved strong with 12 shutouts and only two teams able to win one out of three games against them. Team votes for leaders were: Most Improved-Heidi Schults, Most Valuable Player-Ann Howard, Most inspirational and Team Captain-Chris Skaife. A victorious J.V. volleyball team cele- brates a victory. Chris Skaife leads the team is their jubilation. Freshman ‘‘A’’ Volleyball The Freshman ‘‘A”’ volleyball team finished the season with a record of 10- 4. These girls worked hard all season, as their record shows. Marshfield was the only team successful of defeating the freshman ‘‘A’”’ team twice. Team leaders were Tracy Erne, Kathy Schlosser, and Frankie Bax. All in all the team was well rounded and will be a great asset to next years volleyball pro- gram. Freshman ‘‘B”’ Volleyball The Freshman ‘‘B’’ volleyball team finished the season with a 7-7 record. Most of the teams victories came in the second half of the season, proving that these girls will help the future volleyball teams at S.H.S. Patty Wright goes up for the kill as Kristi Carter, Wendy Holcomb and Chris Nokleby look on. Chris Nokleby skies with arms out stretched to make a block for the Miller volleyball team. ee Girls runners were led by two state finishers The girls cross country team was good this year. Their season record showed nothing of what the team ac- complished in 1980. Two outstanding runners led the team. Lisa Hien (junior) showed vast im- provement over last year. She placed 6th in district and 4th in the state AAU meet. Laurie Stoval placed 2nd at dis- trict and 1st at the state AAU meet and along with Lisa represented S.H.S. at state and national championships. Lau- rie plans to go to O.S.U. or Oregon and Lisa plans to return to S.H.S. next year. With the returning runners and new arrivals the girls team is expected to be strong in the coming year at S.H.S. Laurie Stovall (left) and Corrine Miller show enthusiasm and good fellings towards the 1980-1981 cross-country season. Boys cross country showed strong in the 1981 season The boys cross country team was young and confident this year. Their season went well as many 1st and 2nd places showed. Garth Morrisette was this years out- standing runner on the boy’s team plac- ing 5th in district and representing S.H.S. at state. Jim Vogt was the only senior on the team. All other members will be return- ing next year for a strong, esperienced team in 1982. Gymnastics team builds strength for next year The gymnastics team was young, but strong in 1980. The team combined ef- forts for 4-1-2 season. Jeanne Tabor was outstanding gymnast for the year, placing 5th on the balance beam at dis- trict, and represented S.H.S. at state. This will be a good experience for Jeanne and the team in 1982. Team votes for outstanding gymnasts are: Karen Drake-Best gymnast, Dar- lene Johns-Most Inspirational, and Lyn- ette Cardwell-Most improved. Corrine Miller leads the pack in the 1980 district meet. a Garth Morrisette leads Don McAdams and the rest of the boy cross-country team, as he did all season. Jeanne Tabor makes a perfect landing for the 1980-1981 gymnastics team. The boy’s varsity basketball team started the 1981 season with great en- thusiasm. The team combined efforts to win 6 out of 9 of their league openers. The second half of the season turned out to be an uphill battle for the guys. After a great first half, the team main- tained a 11 and 11 season record. The most improved player was Matt Chapman. Greg Fenn was the team captain and both Greg and Matt were selected as the outstanding seniors of the 1981 season. J.V. Basketball The junior varsity basketball team was dominated by sophomores that gained valuable experience. The team while smaller than most teams played with intensity and hustle. Many of these players will help make future varsity teams very successful. Sophomore Basketball The boys sophomore basketball team was disciplined in 1981. We have 50 girls out (the largest group ever) and 23 were freshman. Yet we are also very strong in some individ- ual events. Senior Patty Wright was a district and state contender in both re- lays and two of the sprints. We are hop- ing that she will receive a major college scholarship with OSU or the U of O. We had strong district performances from Senior Kathy Kurilo and Junior Terri Wagner in the 400 and relays, ju- nior Debbie Daley and Sophomore Dea- dra Thomas in the sprints and relays, Senior Kris Carter in the Javelin and discus, Freshman Toni Tabor, Junior Lisa Hein in the distrances, Sophomore Dawnita Mills in the long jump and Sen- ior Sandy Singhose and Junior Karen Campagna in the high jump. spring Sports (Left) Patty Wright and Debbie Dailey race for winning finish. (Above) Freshman, Tony Windom, high hurdles as Springfield High Students look on. Boys sent one representative to state The 1981 boys track team struggled through the season winning only one and tieing one of six dual meets. In the invitational they farred much better, placing 3rd at the Springfield, Thurston invitational, and 2nd at the Indian relays. Two guys on this years team excelled above the normal expectations. Bill Johnston placed 4th in district against the toughest competition in the last five years. Garth Morrisette placed 2nd in district showing great endurance in the 3,000 meter run. Garth was the only SHS representative at the 1981 state meet. he placed 3rd grabbing Spring- fields only state points. This years team was built on many young and inexperienced track and field starts to be. Next years team will be happy to recieve many of these pros- pects for a prominent 1982 season. After a state championship in 1979 jaa a) oe , e and an 2nd in 1980, we regained the ! com i championship in 1981. . MILLERS 135 Boys have slow start finish big The 1981 edition of Miller baseball started off slowly, loseing 4 of its first 7 games. But showing tremendous char- acter and courage they won 10 of their last 11 games to finish with a 13-5 re- cord for a 2nd place finish in district. Qualifying for the district playoffs the Millers defeated North Bend 6 to 1 but lost to South Eugene 7 to 4 ending a successful season. Players recieving all district recognition were Pete Acker, Daren Deadmond, Tim Riles, Greg Fenn, Greg Miller, and Bob Quick. Acker, Quick, Fenn and Ray Pearson were se- lected to the Golden Glove team for their outstanding defensive play. Pete Acker also recieved state honors by be- ing picked on the state team and play- ing in the 1981 state metro game. J.V. Baseball The J.V. baseball team strove for en- thusiasm, team confidence and mental toughness in 1981. The guys met their goals through hard work and lots of in- couragement. Housing mostly sophomores, the J.V. team placed 3rd in district with a 17-4 league record and a 17-8 season effort. Many of these young men will produce great baseball at the varsity level in 1982. Girls don’t meet year’s expectatons The varsity softball team struggled through a rough season. A 6 win, 16 loss season was not up to the expecta- tions of both players and coaches. The most inspiring game came late in the season, a 7-6 victory over cross-town rivals, Thurston. Dawn Owen was selected as the team captain and the valuable player of the 1981 season. Keri Riddle was picked as the 5AAA all district second baseman. Vicki Edwards, Dawn Owen and Ann Howard were members of the honorable mention list. With help from returning varsity play- ers and a strong J.V. team next year should be a good one for Miller softball. J.V. Softball The j.v. softball team started slow in 1981. Losing their first two league open- ers the team had to struggle to come back, and come back they did. Winning the next 5 games brought the gals right back into the league. 8 wins and 6 losses was the final re- sult of a tough played season. Winning just over 50% of their games put the team in a 4th place league finish out of 8 teams. Patty Stafford and Connie Etchison were selected most valuable players, Suzie Webb was most inspirational a nd Randi Rush was the most improved. 1981 season rebuilding year for Golf team The 1981 golf team consisted of mainly young and inexperienced play- ers. This season was basically a rebuild- ing year. Coach Hemphill stressed fundamen- tals and disciplined golf. “‘l expected an 8th place finish this year,’’ says Hem- phill, “‘and a strong 8th place is what we got.’’ With the young players gaining experience through summer play, all we can do is improve.”’ Larry Warner is the only graduating senior on the team. The rest of the guys will be play ing all summer in coach Hemphill’s summer golf program. Girls team 5AAA district champs this season The girls tennis team had a great sea- son in 1981. Their dual-meet record was 6-4-5, showing nothing of thier strength and ability. Through strict training and dicipline these girls captured the 5AAA district championship. This victory sent 5 SHS representatives to the 1981 state meet. Kristi Atkinson put forth an outstand- ing effort to capture a 4th place state finish in the singles division. In the dou- bles catagory we found both of Spring- fields top doubles teams going head to head for the first place berth. Partners Sean Gambee and Marie McCulley combined efforts to topple the favorites, Shari Rose and Karen Shelgren, for the first place state trophy. This left Shari and Karen as the second place doubles team in the state. Of these five outstanding players, Ka- ren Shelgren will be the only returning player. The 1982 team will have a good nucleus to build around. Boys get first in both singles and doubles As in past years, Bob Semon has done it again. This years tennis team pulled off an 11-4 league record and a 9-2 district record. The team dominated district play throughout the season and came through as champions in the district match. Scott Peery, an experienced state player, captured the district cham- pionship in singles play. Andy Burke and Jeff Delemarter showed strong dis- cipline and great team play to become the 1981 district champion in doubles. Scott went on to become this years singles champion at the 1981 state meet. Andy and Jeff gave it their all for a second place finish in the doubles cata- gories. Most of the 1981 tennis team will be graduating, leaving coach Seaman to throw together another state team in 1982. (Above) Rea Moffi tt follows through after serving to an opponent.
