1973 a year of energy crisis This was the year we learned a new word, “Energy Crisis’. Here in Oregon we found out about it before anyone else did. The governor told everyone to turn out the lights and not to light Christmas trees. Suddenly around Christmas we saw a vari- ation of the age-old dragging the gut. Only this time we spent many hours and gallons of gas waiting in lines at gas stations. It was kind of strange. We were having a tough time of it and there was no war going on. Everyone began talking about riding their bikes, although the racks didn’t seem to get any fuller. We had speeches from the power companies. We even had a week of things about the ‘‘energy crunch’. Not too much attention was paid, though. We slept through an assembly which said there would be nothing left by the year 2000. About a half dozen newswriting students entered the poster contest. No one else in the student body bothered. People walked around saying, “It’s an oil company plot,’ or “Nixon should do something.’ A few people were saying, Find alternate sources of energy,” and “Yes, we do have a prob- lem.” By the time this is read, we will have found out for sure what the situation really was.
