Millers Log ‘74, page 7 ee ESSE SSDI SL a atc etaoamectce a 1973 a year of energy crisis This was the year we learned a new word, “Energy Crisis’. Here in Oregon we found out about it before anyone else did. The governor told everyone to turn out the lights and not to light Christmas trees. Suddenly around Christmas we saw a vari- ation of the age-old dragging the gut. Only this time we spent many hours and gallons of gas waiting in lines at gas stations. It was kind of strange. We were having a tough time of it and there was no war going on. Everyone began talking about riding their bikes, although the racks didn’t seem to get any fuller. We had speeches from the power companies. We even had a week of things about the ‘‘energy crunch’. Not too much attention was paid, though. We slept through an assembly which said there would be nothing left by the year 2000. About a half dozen newswriting students entered the poster contest. No one else in the student body bothered. People walked around saying, “It’s an oil company plot,’ or “Nixon should do something.’ A few people were saying, Find alternate sources of energy,” and “Yes, we do have a prob- lem.” By the time this is read, we will have found out for sure what the situation really was. Students were able to view their works and the artists at work. All were able and anxious to answer questions about their crafts and the skills necessary to do them. Among the artists attending were Mike Youngblood, sculptor, at far left; Dan White, metal smith, upper left; Chip Masarie, potter, center left; Sandy Daniels, water color artist, lower left; Karen Snider, oil painter, lower center left; Alfonso Cabrera, wood- carver, far right. Students seemed to be most fascinated by Masarie and the potter’s wheel. (photos by Dave Allen.) The 1973 Springfield football team had a disappointing season in the record books, scoring one victory against eight defeats. Several factors combined to hamper the Miller’s efforts to- ward a winning season. There were injuries to several key players, and a number of players from last year’s team decided not to play this year. Sophomores and juniors were plentiful in the lineups this year, and there will be a strong nucleus of players for next year’s team. Mike Roseberry was named this year’s outstanding footballer and Steve Shelgren and Greg Tharp shared the honor of most improved player. Row one: Mike Roseberry and Grant Plautz. Valley 32 Dallas 40 Crow 22, Corvallis 24 Thurston 37 The following is from a story run in the Springfield News run just before the girls participated in the state tourney in Portland. The story was a pace setter in cover- age of girls sports at SHS. Jeanette Sullivan has finally learned what athletic competition is all about. The hard way. And, somehow, the lesson seemed ironic. After a whirlwind season that saw Springfield’s girls basketball team chalk up an incredible 13-0 record, the Millerettes suddenly faded in the clench Wednesday night and dropped a 37-30 contest to none other than visiting cross- town rival Thurston. “Now | know what it means to be really competitive,’’ grinned Jeanette afterwards. ‘| was really uptight about that game. | didn’t get any sleep Wednesday night and | think | cried.” But, despite the reaction to its first loss, Springfield’s tears haven't blurred the Millerettes’ ultimate goal -- winning the cham- pionship at the first_annual girls’ state basketball tournament in Portland next weekend. Springfield’s desire to win the tourney evolved almost from the moment Jeanette learned there was even going to be a state tournament this year. She had little trouble instilling ner girls with the same idea. “It all started last spring when | decided my girls should go to a basketball camp,’’ said Jeanette. “| called Dick Harter and dis- covered he wasn’t going to conduct a camp so we started looking around and | found out that Portland State was having a camp.” The Millerettes conducted a number of fund raising projects and two girls attended the camp. “While they were up there they heard about the state tournament -- we didn’t know when or where, just that there would be a girls state,’’ Jeanette recounted. Upon the completion of girls’ cross country, the Springfield game plan for the state tournament be- gan to take shape. When the District 54AA girls season began Springfield entered the fray with a passion. “lf anything put us in the tourney it was my girls’ super determination,” Jeanette grins. “‘They weren't going to let any- body beat them.’’ Surprisingly, the Millerettes didn’t let anybody beat them until the very end. “Oh, there were some close ones,’ Jeanette recalls, referring to a trio of come-from-behind squeakers. Producing a good head of steam from a 28-32 victory over © Emerald League champion Marist in their first contest, the Miller- ettes had little trouble rolling over Mohawk, North Eugene and Jeanette’s alma mater, South Eugene. In fact, the two victories over Mohawk were spectacular. During the first meeting Spring- field demolished the Indians 57-8 and in the second contest tromped the squaws 32-9. “Suddenly, however, the going got rough. Only Springfield’s sturdy of- ‘fense saved: the day as the Miller- ' ettes came from behind to edge Thurston 35-34, Cottage Grove 28-35 and Willamette 34-31. At this point Springfield had collected a 9-O record -- and popped up as the only undefeated team in the midwestern girls basketball league. Subsequent non-league vic- tories over Crescent Valley of Corvallis and Dallas boosted the tally to 11-0 -- enough to raise a few eyebrows at Portland State. Culling the list of potentials for the 16-team invitational state tournament, PSU athletic officials had no trouble deciding that Springfield should be invited to Portland. By the time Springfield’s invitation had found its way through an inept postal service, rat sonoma “ ie Ni mes Z We the Millerettes had their record to 14-0. Needless to say, there was considerable joy in the Springfield ranks. “We decided right then and there we were going to win the championship, Jeanette — said. “And | think my girls can do it.” Fortunately, Springfield will be entering the tourney on a firm foundation. Of the 13 girls slated to make the trip, six are returning lettermen and two are sophomores with virtually unlimited potential. Probably the four most out- standing players on the squad are senior guards Linda Warthen and Cindy Dubbs, and junior forwards Rae Reed and Janel Huser -- who distinguished herself last year on the Springfield girls’ track team. Jeanette also sees a bright future for Angie Hill -- an attractive 6-foot sophomore who looks like she’d be more at home on the rally squad than the floor of combat. extended “Angie has done an outstand- ing job this season, but lacks experience,” Jeanette said. ‘| think by next year her talents will really show.” Backing these five starters are junior guard Peggy Haines, junior forward Val Ruttencutter and sophomore forward Cindy Corkum. On the shoulders of these eight girls will rest the bulk of Spring- field’s hopes for a state champion- ship. Jeanette doesn’t foresee that much of a problem. Although Springfield foundered on some of the basics against Thurston, its general posture is sound. Strategy, too, seems to be solid. “Our defense varies,’’ Jeanette explains. ‘‘We sort of divide it up between a 2-2-1 zone and man-to- man -- or | guess you could say woman-to-woman.”’ Even though the zone has proven effective — particularly during the Millerettes’ early con- tests, Jeanette seems to prefer the man-to-man. “Man-to-man is the only way to really learn defense,’’ the coach maintains. “We didn’t use it against Thurston Wednesday night and you know what happened. | just don’t know where my head was when we played Thurston.” Jeanette avoids making any commitments on what kind of defense Springfield will utilize at state other than describing the man-to-man as being ‘‘highly suc- cessful’’ in post season games against many teams who've been invited to Portland. Offensively, Springfield will just have to wait and see. The Millerettes have a versatile reper toire when it comes to offense, and undoubtedly will exhaust it at the tournament. As the regular season devel- oped, Springfield began relying on two particular offensive strategies -- and both will probably see con- siderable use next weekend. “Against the vnan-to-man we screen and roll,’ Jeanette said. “The girls are really very good at this and it’s proven effective. | don’t know what happened to itt Wednesday, though.” The other offense that’s been good to the Millerettes has been a 1-3-1. “When we come up against a zone we use the 1-3-1 with a high post and low post and two wings,”’ Jeanette explains. ‘‘We didn’t do that very well against Thurston’s zone Wednesday night either. Of course other than Dallas -- which | think is a very good team -- we haven't been playing teams as good as Thurston.” Jeanette can only hope that’s the case in Portland. If Dallas is one of the better teams in the state, the Dragons won't get to prove it this year. “| doh’t know why,” said Jeanette,” but Dallas didn’t even apply to participate in the state tourney.” That oversight, unquestion- ably, will be to Springfield’s ad- vantage. A few more omissions like that and it’s almost a certainty Jeanette Sullivan won't be crying herself to sleep next Friday in Portland. As you know, the girls basketball team participated in the state basketball finals which were held in Portland. The results were good, but not quite good enough to get us to the finals but we did make the semi-finals. We beat Coquille 25-19 and Grant 28-21 but Centennial beat us 24-20. An 11 point margin by the sopho- mores set the pace for the victorious evening. Things began warming up in the J.V. game, we saw tempers flare, a high number of fouls, and three technical fouls. In the Varsity con- test the Millers were fight- ing the team with State Tournament aspirations. Tom Hooker’s_ coolness and accuracy led the Millers in a steady even, low foul- ing game which kept the fans in suspense down to the last 15 seconds, where they led by 3 points. So many games had been lost in the critical 15 seconds the crowd was _ standing with the smell of upset in the air. The Colts were unable to score and Carlson was fouled with 1 second remaining, guaranteeing the win. The clean sweep was especially sweet to a hometown crowd who had become supportive and enthusiastic even in the face of a losing season. Much of the spirit of the season resulted from the leader- ship, showmanship, and enthusiasm of such groups as the pep band and Rally’s. 77 Far upper left, Mark Reiser guards, far left center, Doug Far upper left, Mark Reiser guards, far left center, Doug Lewellen gets set for a rebound. The coaches were Mr. Vogt, Mr. Canaday, and Mr, Wheeler. On the first game of the season, spirits were shattered by a loss to Elmira 1-4. After being slaugh- tered by Elmira, the Millers came back and wiped out Creswell with a score of 3%4-1%. Next came Cottage Grove, last year’s winners, and an SHS win of 3%4-1%. Then SHS just got by Churchill with a score of 32, Next Oakridge stopped a skunk by getting a draw on the 2nd board, making the score 4%-%. On the next four games against North Eugene, Willamette, Pleasant Hill, and Sheldon, SHS skunked them with a score of 5-0. Then South Eugene just inched by us with a score of 3-2. The next victim was Thurston who forfeited the game to us, thus giving us a record of 9 wins, 2 losses. At the district playoffs against South Eugene, Cottage Grove and Churchill, SHS got revenge on South Eugene, beating them with a score of 3-2, then we just beat Cottage Grove by getting four draws and one win, giving SHS a score of 3-2. Then the team lost to Churchill by a score of 2-3 but the team still won district with a record of 2-1. 2nd went to Churchill with a record of 2-1 (we had a better seasonal record) and 3rd went to Cottage Grove. The team went to state in Corvallis on Feb. 8 9 and finished 12th out of 16 schools by losing to Lincoln 2-3 and Sprage 1%-3’%2, then getting a draw with David Douglas and St. Helens. No statistics were available at press time, but they will be published in the 1975 yearbook. The girls track team also had several strong performers back from last year’s team. Sprinter Amy Cook, distance runner Kathy Jordan and hurdler and long jumper Marylou Armstrong have participated in state meets and are expected to lead the team to a strong showing this year. Because the Miller’s Log must go to the printers in early March it was impossible to have formal team shots of the spring sports program. Also to be mentioned is Bob Taylor, photographer; Ronalee Ramsay who helped proofread the paper, student teacher Midge Jambor; and the newswriting students. Nellie Scott, Production Manager and cook at SHS is planning to retire at the end of the school year. For 21 years, Mrs. Scott has worked for the students of Springfield comprising the daily menus, ordering food, and carrying out the regular duties of a cook. Mrs. Scott began working as a cook in 1953, and was later promoted to Manager in 1957. When she started, there were only 5 cooks working at Springfield with 300-400 students to feed, by comparison with the 1000 students they are now cooking for. Many changes have oc- curred while Mrs. Scott has been working. Changes in student population, and also changes in the school itself. She has found her last 3 years in the new school ‘‘very interesting.” When Mrs. Scott isn’t work- ing at the school, she is usually working at home, where she raises pole beans and filberts. She has 18 acres of pole beans, and 5 acres of filberts, of which she has farmed for 25 years. She.stopped growing beans 3 years ago. In her leisure time she likes to fish, bowl and travel. She hopes to doa lot of traveling after she retires. During her first summer of retirement, she would like to _ travel throughout Canada and go to the East Coast. Other than traveling, she said she would like to “just relax and take it easy.”’ Mrs. Scott is very fond of the many students she has become acquainted with in her many years of service. She will be greatly missed here at SHS. In 1957 while | was a senior at Springfield High School, | heard there would be a job opening in the attend- ance office at the high school. | immediately called my mother and begged her to apply for the job. She did, bless her, and was interviewed and accepted by Dr. Dale Parnell, who was then our principal. For the next three months, until my grad- uation in June, we had the most fantastic time together. My mother actually became my friend. We had lunch together, worked to- gether (1 took my office practice class from her), shared secrets together and just had fun to- gether. After | left, my sister Milly and many other Springfield High stu- dents and staff were able to enjoy mother’s warmth, understanding and dedication to her work until September of 1961. At that time she changed schools and started working at the new Thurston’ High School as attendance office clerk. It was back to Spring- field High School for mother in September of 1965. She worked in the attendance office again but soon was pro- moted to records clerk, the job she held until her retirement this year, 1974. The students and staff have gained from know- ing my mother, not only because of her dedica- tion to her work but in a personal way, too. It has always been my pleasure to help her when she had a heavy work load and | will miss her not working for the school district and especially for Springfield High School. It will be an honor to follow in her footsteps and keep up the family tradition by working for the Springfield Public Schools as an elementary | school secretary. | hope my years with the school district are as successful as yours were, Mother, and that | will become as well loved by students and fellow co- workers as you are. God Bless You, Lillian Eich Dixon y ee ww HA Mrs. Betty Eich igs Z a Mr. George Calderwood Mr. George Calderwood, a U.S. History teacher for 13 years here at Springfield High is going to retire after this year. Mr. Calder- wood has mixed feelings on retire- ment. ‘| have mixed emotions. | feel as though | have a lot of years left but | also feel as though | could use them for my own pleasure.” He said he likes teaching very much, and he enjoys working with students. Before he began here he taught at Baker. Mr. Calderwood and his wife Ruby were married in 1928. They have a son and two grandchildren. His son is a professor at the University of California. Mr. Calderwood was raised in Lake County of Eastern Oregon. He majored in zoology and min- ored in psychology and social studies. He went to college his first two years at Oregon State, and graduated from Southern Oregon College. He got a degree and graduated from the University of Nevada. He began his masters degree at the University of Wash- ington, then fought in World War Il for 3 years and finally finished his masters at Oregon. He has traveled all over the U.S. and the South Pacific. He has spent several years aerial map- ping from the Canadian border to Mexico and west of the Rockies. He said he would like to visit Arizona for a few winter months or San Diego, California, but he has no plans yet. Mr. Calderwood said that traveling was not some- thing he looks forward to doing but that he might also like to go camping and fishing in Alaska for a summer. beficwbes A: Ctutiidlaslhee 4 And Ley, 7 Jun cc oe nen LEP 143 Mr. Phil Lutrell Retirement is a time to with- draw from one’s active duty, Occupation or position, and take it easy for a while. Slow things down. This isn’t the case, however, for our supposedly retired cus- todian, Mr. Phillip Lutrell. Mr. Lutrell retired just before this school year started, August 30. He is reported to be working, more and harder than he did before his retirement. When inquiring, during an_ interview with Mrs, Lutrell, what Mr. Lutrell does with his spare time, she responded: “He hasn‘t been having any. He works for the Booster Club all the time. He‘s been down at the school more than when he worked.” Mr, Lutrell also fills in part time for custodians that are sick, Mr. Lutrell has always been active in something. He was born in Monazoome, North Carolina, June 15, 1910. He graduated from Newland High School in 1927. During his time at New- land, he was president of the Literary Club, played four years of basketball, four years of base- ball, dnd lettered in both. He furthered his education two years, at Lee McGrey Institute. He continued playing basketball in college and majored in language with four years of Latin. Most of his time at Lee McGrey was spent in literary society. He taught two years of Latin in North Carolina. After teaching, Mr. Lutrell went into the military service. He was in the service from 1943 to 1945. During his time there he served in a Tank Destroyer Batallion, and as a radio technician. He was awarded a Certificate of merit for distinguished service, a Presidential unit citation merit, and a purple heart for wounds received in action. After being injured, he was hospitalized and returned to the States in June of 1945. Twelve years later, he was employed by school district no. 19, and has been here since. Mr. Lutrell has always been interested in Boosters Club, but participated only as a custodian up until his retirement. Now he’s chairman and permanent member of the concession committee. Sounds busy? Mr. Lutrell says, “It just runs my legs off.” What made him decide to join? ‘‘Well, I've suffered with these kids and won and lost with them for sixteen years so you get kind of close and | just thought it would be kind of fun.” Does he enjoy Boosters? “Oh, I’m having a ball.” RE AE LH ATE “| was stalking this deer and | saw this beautiful tree, and | sat down under this beautiful tree, and | went to sleep.”’ Mike Streeter Born in Trenton, Ontario, Canada, June 8, 1941.
