Maybe some people never get tired of seeing candid shots of popular people that look posed. It seems the average person is only photographed in group pictures. No one ever sees the little people of the student body, but this is only one man’s opinion, maybe I’m the only one....... Each man, spinning, whirling in empty space; all turning separately without Knowing that one man is trying to communicate. Each man is thinking his own thoughts for himself. The different man wants to share with others with separate worlds of no communication. If only one of these revolving, twirling, worlds of thoughts would help him. If only enough people somewhere would help by getting their thoughts together to make a way. Who can resist the temptation to throw a few snowballs or rub a few faces in it? The big snow of ‘72 as it will be called started on Tuesday, December 5. By night everyone knew that there would be no school the next few days. The snow stayed and the temper- atures dropped into the minus teen degree range and held for the rest of the week. The icy grip did many dollars damage to shrubs and trees in the area. Coldest temp. of the week was down to minus 15. The rain. Will it ever stop? Will the clouds ever go away and let the sun shine through? Will God ever stop crying, and smile upon the earth? The snow was good for making sculptures as we see here. The students in the Commercial Food Service Class, taught by Mrs. Huber and Mrs. Hatch must have thought so when they served lunch to the faculty. The hostess was Kathy Mishler. She greeted the guests and showed them to their seats. The waitress- es brought the guests their menus, seryed water or coffee, took the orders, and served the lunch. The menus were designed by Julie Ham. The cover portrayed a witch, a haunted house and a pumpkin—all representative of the Halloween Spirit. The menu was the regular menu of the day, the main dishes featured roll-ups or meat loaf. The charge was $.55, the usual adult price. The class also served lunch to the visiting Oregon State University Career Education Advisors. Later in the year the class served lunch as a regular feature. Ken Brougher was manager of the day, having the responsibility of watching over both restaurant and the kitchen. He introduced himself to each guest and saw that everyone got fast, effecient service. The faculty generally agreed that it was nice to be served lunch without having to stand in the long line. The Springfield football team had a disappointing season on the scoreboard this year, but not necessarily in all aspects of the game. You can hardly expect a coach to come to a school and have a champion- ship team the first few years he is here. There have been many improvements made this year which are pleasing to the trained football eye. 8 We all want to have a winning season, but be patient. It takes'a few years for a school to adjust to a new head coach. You must look at the Spring- field football team as you would an expansion team in the professional league. Look at it this way for the simple reason that it takes a few years to beceme a contender. ° There is a good nucleus of juniors and sophomores, so give them a chance. You just might have a state title in a few years. 39 The JV foot- ball team en- joyed a very good season. The Millers, under coach Dove, had a number of sophomores participating and the varsity football team has a lot to look forward toin ’73 when these talented underclassmen take over. ¥ MO snevieleibehis OP ges Sate elias a «te Loe Sheetal LSE ge ce i Upper left the JV team; 1. to r. row 1, Keith Jackson, Ron Bour, Rob Whitbeck, Elroy Harrison, Doug Lewellen, Don Kinley, Dave Thompson, Al Lively, Guy Carter, Jeff MacPhearson. This marked the ending of her forty year teaching career. It all began in the fall of 1929, a year of bank closures, bankruptcy, no money, no One getting paid. It was “‘The Big Year.’’ Mrs. Young's first teaching job was in Nyssa, ) Oregon, where she was surrounded by alkali dust four inches deep, sage brush, and jack rabbits, but “very nice people.’ About 100 students attended this small, friendly school. Mrs. Young became ill and had to refrain from teaching for two years. When she got well, she took off an additional year and married John Young. After the wedding, she lived in Nyssa once again. She returned to teaching as she couldn't bring herself to stay home playing bridge twice a day like most house- Wives at that time. The next thing that stands out in Mrs. Young’s mind was the tragedies of World War II. Part of the students were taken In to ET ae serve and some Japanese were ship- ped in from the coast to an old concentration camp, all these small Japanese boys and girls were rather lost in their language and commun- | ication with English speaking strangers. Her brother, who was a pilot of . a B17 was shot down over Berlin ) and was considered missing in action. : a Together the Youngs decided they should be near her parents in Port- i land. ) In 1944, Springfield High School ; needed a coach, so they came to this school and liked it very much. Her husband, John, was also a principal for a while. The various subjects Mrs. a Young has taught are English (of course), Journalism, Vocal Music, Dramatics, and believe it or not, Girl Scouts. Many people have their favorites and specialties and English is most dominantly Mrs. Young's favorite. She says, ‘I’m still learn- ing more of English and other things. It is so broad. When you've taken both literature and writing; | don’t think there’s any end to writing...| just have more fun!” Mrs. Young has always tried to however, she does plan on sleeping treat students as she would like to in in the mornings. be treated. ‘‘I like to inspire all my It has been an exciting forty students to keep learning. | realize years of teaching spread over forty I'm not a genius, nor the greatest three years time. teacher in the world, but i'm still oe ane Wr f learning everyday.” Exci tin g 40 years At present, Mrs. Young hasn't any plans for after retirement, 153 Kelly... a fine fellow” In the teacher’s lunch room on a February Friday after school, the staff gathered for a short faculty meeting. It was a special meeting, indeed. While everyone was gathering together, finding a place to sit, many were helping themselves to a piece of cake and a cup of coffee. It sounded more like a social get-together than a faculty meeting. Actually it was a Surprise reception for the retire ment of one of our custodians, Kelly Jackson. A big smile was on kelly’s face when he came in—laughing and talking with everyone. One teacher said to Kelly, ‘‘Maybe you'll have time to come back and see us.”’ Another commented ‘‘We are really going to miss you around here.” The atmosphere was gay and moving along fine. At the right time a gift was presented to Kelly and his wife with these words from Mr. O’Neal. ‘’I’m sure we all know Kelly is a fine fellow and his wife a very nicedady. Kelly and | his wife have been sweet to all of us. In appreciation for his work,”’ he added with a laugh, ‘‘we have collected all the scrap paper around the school and were going to give him this present from all of us.’’ The present was a beautiful wall clock, however. He also re- ceived a pair of red socks with white hearts. Kelly has been custodian for Springfield High School for 4% years. Before he came to Spring- field he was employed inthe San Francisco area. “Little things make it worth while” During her fourteen years of working at Springfield High School, Mrs. Hodgson has suffered no hard- ship or warfare getting along with everyone in the attendance office and throughout the entire school. Before working at SHS she was an everyday, normal American housewife. Later, she acquired a job in the kitchen at Brattain Elementary and then as a cook at Springfield Junior High. In Oct. 1959, Mrs. Hodgson worked with Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Eich (former- ly employed at Thurston High School) in the administration office at Springfield High School. Then in 1960, she moved to the office of attendance. To be able to work in the office she took commercial classes to brush up on_ the basics and proceedures of the job. “The little things in life usually dominate the big things.’’ com- mented Mrs. Hodgson, when telling about the brighter points in her job. Her whole association with the kids, she felt, was pretty good. Its the little things day in and day out- that make it all worth while. ““’There are nice people all around this school. When people work, they don’t have time to be good neigh- bors.’’ she stated. ‘‘And that’s the policy | usually try to follow.” After retiring, she plans on taking up sewing and maybe some art work. She is looking forward to a calm, boring life in which she can stay up late, watch t.v. and sleep in. Mrs. Hodgson is really going to miss everyone, but above all, in the least, will she miss making out withdrawals. 155 INDEX Adams, Michael, (10), 51, 114 Adams, Sandra (11) 69, 130 Akers, Rebecca (10) 114 Alldredge, David (11) 130 Alldritt, Jon (12) 94, 148 Alldritt, Jerry (10) 114 Allely, Jan (10) 55, 69, 70, 112 114,76 Allen, David (11) 130, 76 Allen, Jack (11) 130 Allison, Loni (12) 94 Allyn, Chery!
