Democratic Fi'rtor - President Lyndon Johnson won the 1964 election by the greatest plurality and per cent of the total vote in U. S. history. Johnson became President at the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Harry’s Hattie for Votes—Sen. Barry Goldwatcr was surrounded by fans at Knoxville, Tenn., air- port September 16 as he campaigned for the presidency on the Republican ticket. The con- servative senator swept to a first-ballot nomina- tion at the convention in San Francisco. National Events in Review—1964 Nobel Prize Winner—Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., right, was greeted by Richard C. Patterson, commissioner of public events, at Kennedy International Air- port Dec. 16 on arrival from Europi . Dr. King was in Oslo to receive the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Alaskan Quake—A whole line of cars rest- ed about 20 feet below street level on a main thoroughfare in Anchorage the day following the disastrous earthquake on March 27. 1 9 Table of Contents Foreword 3 Seminars 49 Dedication 4 Honors and Awards 51 Faculty 5 Yearbook Staff 52 Honor Students 12 Classes 57 Seniors 13 Activities 65 Senior Directory 41 Athletics 81 In Memoriam 48 Advertisements 101 2 Foreword THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way. I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. --Robert Frost 3 Dedication COA CH DA VID DRA KE It is with pride that we, the Class of 1965, dedicate our year- book to Mr. Drake. Margaret was a girl of devout religious convictions and spiritual maturity. She lived her profession of faith before her fellowmen. She will always be remembered as the girl with the happy smile, the twinkling eyes and the generous heart. 48 r r Seminars ENGLISH 1st ROW: E. Bean, L. Rosen - berger, K. Flynn, L. Bucking- ham, R. American Field Service Brigitte Duperrey, our American Field Service exchange student, spent the year at the home of Mr . and Mrs. Melvin Lee, Mogie, Judy and Ricky. Brigitte came to us from Pantin, France, where she lives with her par- ents and her brother, Rene, who is 22. As a member of the Senior Class, Brigitte was a member of Green Horn, Public Speak- ing, Chorus, Band-Aids, andtheA.F.S. Com- mittee . She hopes to enter the University of Paris, with the hope of becoming a psychologist. Brigitte has been a welcome addition to the Senior Class. Everyone joins in wishing her continued success and happiness. Sheryl Parker, our American Field Service representative, spent the summer in Pescara, Italy. She lived with the Icilio Tedori family. Papa” Icilio is the secretary of a national union and is also very active in politics. Her Brigitte and Judy three Italian brothers work for the Italian Socialist party, and Anna, her Italian aunt, manages a grocery store. Mamma Gianna is a typical Italian homemaker and an excellent cook. Her Italian sister, Marilena, is a student, completing her last year of high school and she hopes to visit Springfield in the future. During her visit, Sherry traveled through Holland, Switzerland and Germany. The Teodori family took her through some of the most famous sites of Italy. They visited Rome, Naples and the Isle of Capri. Sheryl The warmth and friendliness of the Italian people impressed Sherry. She summarized the essence of her summer by saying, This summer I learned what friendship really is. I went to a foreign coun- try not knowing the people, their customs or their language. The Teodori family accepted me and treated me as another daughter. To me, this is love. And it is only through this kind of love that we will someday have world peace .
