DOWNS AND UPS OF 1952 Down and up seems to summarize the 1952 football season pretty well, The Cosmos started way down by dropping their first five contests and finished way up by winning their final two games, a slaughter over Barre and a satisfying win over their old rivals from Bellows Falls, The season also seemed to be a year of revenge as the five teams the Machinetowners had beaten in 1951 QBrattleboro, Windsor, Bennington, Stevens and M,S,J,j came back to reverse the decisions, and Springfield tumed around to take care of the three that had marred the 1951 Green and White record by tying Rutland and knocking off Spaulding and Bellows Falls, The 1952 season began in early September when '75 boys reported to Coaches Mackey and Neill at Riverside Park, The team had been hit hard by graduation, but there were a number of veterans returning, Among these were Co-Captains Bob Barton and Gary Richardson, Fred Zielonko, Roger Jaquith, Chet Smith, Fink Poole, Dick Call, Stan Norton, Rene -Riopelle, Bob Barnard, Russ Emerson and Dean Still, After two weeks of hard drilling, the team started an eight game season at Brattleboro on September 20, From then until November 8 at Bellows Falls came seven weeks of rough, hard-played football that saw the Cosmos get some good breaks, some tough breaks, make some great plays and some that were not so good, When it was all over and the equipment stored away for another year, the record showed two wins, five losses and one tie, Although ending up with a somewhat mediocre record, the players showed great spirit and did their best all season, with the result being that two of the Cosmos, Bob Barton and Bob Ward, were awarded positions on the second team in the All-State balloting at the close of the season, Fink Poole and Chet Smith were also rewarded for their efforts when they received honorable mention, in fi 'N . wg, ' A l 7X if x f X J Co-Captains Richardson and Q' Barton discussing team stra tegy with Coach Mackey I 1 I ,, K r f Saturday, September 20. After two weeks of hard work on fundamentals and plays, the Cosmos traveled to Brattleboro to open the season with the Colonels, Springfield's inexperienced team came out on the short end of a 25-6 score, Even while losing, the Cosmos played good football at times, with Jim Ward the outstanding player on the field. Chet Smith, Fink Poole, Bob Barton, Ed Huber and Dick Call also chip- ped in a big share toward the cause. Saturday, September 27. A strong and classy Windsor team journeyed to Spring- field to open the Cosmos 1952 home sea- son, The Mackeymen never were able to get going in this game, and Windsor had a field day, routing the Machine-towners, 26-0, The Green and White were very unimpressive in their first home game, lacking the spark and fire of previous seasons, Saturday, October 4. The Springfield Gridsters, still looking for their first win, met the Benn-Hi Cats at Riverside Park and were badly out-classed for three quar- ters. In the fourth stanza, however, trailing 19-0, they suddenly came to life, Sparked by big Fred Zielonko, scrappy Roger Iaquith, and Freshman Chuck Coller, the Springfield team proved 4 they were capable of great football. ' 'Q' However, the Cats had just enough left an W5 fs:-gang? to hold the inspired home-towners at ' A Y 2 I V Je three touchdowns and walked off the field X' ii . ., ' victors, 26-21, Q57 Saturday, October 11. The Cosmos jour- neyed to New Hampshire to meet Stevens High of Claremont in a traditionally tough battle. When the final whistle had blown and the smoke cleared away, the boys of Stevens were on top, '7-6. Even though the Mackeymen had tasted defeat for the fourth straight time, the moral victory - gave the Springfield fans some encourage- ment when they saw the fire and spark that had been lacking come back into their boys' play. 1 ff-'l '9,S. Saturday, October 18. Coach Mackey's Machine-towners traveled to Saint Peters Field in Rutland to meet the Mounties and dropped a one-sided decision to a team that was shooting for state honors, Even though badly beaten, the Springfieldites took heart in seeing the fine running of B b Barton and the outstanding play of Fink Poole and Chet Smith, Saturday, October 25. The Cosmos staged a second half surge to earn a 19-19 tie with a strongly favored Rutland team. The Mackeymen, who were behind 19-6 at half time, showed the crowd some great offensive and defensive ball in the second half to avert their sixth straight defeat. Co-Captain Bob Barton, Dick Call, Eddy Huber and Chuck Coller did the work in piling up points on offense while Stan Nor- ton led the defense in holding the Rutlanders scoreless in the final two periods, Saturday, November 1. Having obtained confidence from the Rutland game, the Mackeymen completely dominated play in trouncing a bewildered Barre team, 45-'7. The Machine-towners had a great day for themselves, proving that they were capable of powerful offensive foot- ball. In this their best game of the year, the Green and White was sparked by the offensive play of Bob Barton, Roger Ja- quith, Dick Call and Chuck Coller, com- bined with the great defensive work of Stan Norton, Fink Poole and Dick'Obie, Saturday, November 8. The big day finally arrived when the Cosmopolitans of Spring- field High School clashed with the Purple Terriers of Bellows Falls at the B,F, play- ground, With Bob Barton sparking the of- fense and Rog Jaquith spearheading both offense and defense, plus the great team play of Dick Obie, Stan Norton, Frank Poole and Chet Smith, the Cosmos wound up the schedule with an impressive 19-14 victory over their arch rivals. Windsor came to town and provided the op- position for our first home game, They played inspired ball throughout and almost upset the applecart, but our boys pulled out a tough one point decision, Trailing the Raiders by twenty points at half-time, the Fighting Cosmos played the type of ball they are capable of in the last half and lost by only five points, Springfield played their best game of the year and took a thrilling one point decision from the highly Mounties, This was their third victory ir1 six starts. incidentally all these games were won by one point, Ln a fast and furious battle played on the Gremelin's home court, the Cosmos came back strong in the last half and won going- away, In what was supposed to be a nip and tuck affair the home-towners coasted to an easy victory over their arch rival, Bellows Falls, Traveling to Brattleboro the Cosmopolitans stopped Pete Beebe, and, conse- xsxx H quently, had no trouble with a sub- par Bratt team, ' QContinued on next pagej Showing their best display of shooting thus far this season the Springfieldites racked up a record 93 points in de- feating a scrappy Benn-Hi Team. Suffering a complete reversal of form Springfield traveled to Bennington just three nights after setting the S, V, L, scor- ing record and dropped a close battle in overtime, This defeat knocked them out of the lead in S, V.L. compe- tition, Springfield fans saw their best home game of the year as a fighting band of Cosmos downed a cocky crew of Red Raiders in a gruelling contest, In a rough and tumble contest played on the Mike's home floor the Cosmos won a fairly close one by virtue of a third quarter spurt, In the all important battle for first place, a fast-breaking band of Mounties broke away in the last period and knocked the home-towners out of a tie for first place, Staging another of their famed second half surges the Cosmos came from far behind and pulled ahead with little time remaining to knock off a valiant crew from West Rutland. Playing before a packed house in Bellows Falls the Cosmopolitans and Terriers staged a high-scoring, dog-eat-dog affair with Springfield coming out on top once, again. Apparently not satisfied with scoring ninety three points, the high scoring hoopsters of SHS poured 102 points through the twine while dominating the organ-grinders for the second time, The Cosmos easily defeated the hapless parochial quintet from Brattleboro, thus completing their S. V.L. schedule, They finished in second place one game behind M,S,J, Playing anything but champion- ship ball during the entire first half, the Springfieldites staged another second half rally and defeated a better than average Stevens quintet, ss, f a X l- av? l gi!
