And danger. Our nation is pros- perous and powerful, it's true. But it is also a beleaguered fortress in a hostile world. We have far more ene- mies than friends on this troubled planet. Even the envious neutrals do not wish us well. Wherever you look, without or within, our problems are gigantic. The generation just ahead of you has fought three wars against external aggressiong it has struggled with staggering internal problems of economics and social justice. We have done the best we could, and not too badly, perhaps, but in the process we have ne- glected some things. What is your generation going to do about the steady rise of crime and delinquency? About the prevalence of payola and classroom cheating? About the sadism on television and the pornography in books and the pre- occupation with perversion in our theatres? Make no mistake about it, these are the classic and historic signs of decadence, ot decay. And what is the answer? The answer is people. Not just any people. A special kind of people. We need people who are honest, honest with a fierce intolerance that considers a lie contemptible and a broken promise a black disgrace. ' We need people who are intelligenlirpeople who can gauge probabilities, make judgments, take action. Al- ready nations are seeking frantically to acquire the best brains of other nations. Intelligence, not yellow metal, is the gold standard of the future. We need people who are bold, who are stimulated, not paralyzed, by danger, who can take the calculated risk and lose, if necessary, lose everything but the willingness to take the risk again. We need people who are patient, but who can become dangerous if pushed too far. There is a point where tolerance ends and spinelessness begins. History speaks plainly about this: No nation ever won freedom without fighting for it, or kept it without being willing to fight. We need people with a passion for work, not just for fame or money or security, but because of the satis- factions that come from achieving the difficult, or even attempting the impossible. We need people who are patriotic, not with the blind conceit that can see no good in other nations, but with an awareness that love of country is essential to all people, because in pride there is confidence, and in con- fidence, achievement. We need cheerful, warm people, people who love life, and know that it brings change, and welcome this. We need people with the imagination and humor and curiosity and love of the beautiful that transcends national boundaries and make them citizens of the world. And where do such people come from? They come out of the heart and soul of any nation that remains ca- pable of judging itself, of shrugging off its lunatic fringes, of demanding sacrifices when necessary, of insist- ing that its citizens keep trying to be better people than they are. Such people come from homes where unselfishness is the cardinal rule of living, from schools where the basic discipline is self-disciplineg from colleges whose concept of education involves not just the acquisition of knowledge, but a kind of endless pilgrimage toward the distant and difficult goals of justice and honor and service to mankind. Since this country was founded, every generation has had its quota of such people. That is why our star has kept rising. Your generation will produce them, too, but there must be more than ever before, because the tides of history run faster and the need is greater than ever before. Members of the Graduating Class, freedom is not just a privilegeg it is a test, and those who cannot pass the test will be denied it. Welcome, then, to the proving grounds. Bring with you all the courage and the vitality and determination you can muster. You are going to need them, just as your country is going to need you. This has been a year that I will not forget very soon. Everything has been so different. Not only the scenery, but also food, church, dating, climate, school, TV, radio and styles. I have enjoyed talking and giving slideshows about Norway to classes at SHS, because the kids seemed to be so interested. I have met so many nice and friendly people since I came here, and I didn't expect that. It has also struck me how self-critical the American Society is. The lively Lowell Anderson family that I have stayed with, must take a lot of credits for me liking it here. Even if I think that I have seen a lot here, there is still so much to see, so I will have to come back again. I would like to give a special thanks to the head of the AFS-Club, Mrs. Wilson for all the time she has spent working for the AFS-Club and Dr. Nighswan- der for his help and goodwill. 22 Marit Z gg . , , , ,fe f iz , , .5 ,, . , asm! ,A V. Not pictured: Julie Slocombe, Rose Wilcox, Dave Youth For Christ Jesus said For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the worldg but that the world should be saved through him. fJohn 32175 Saved from what? Well, Jesus came to save us from death caused by all the wrong things we love to do, Cdon't they call that sin?J We either serve him or ourselves, and he came to change us so we will love him and obey him. I used to go to church, but I wasn't a Christian. God was just some idealistic supreme being. But one day someone told me how practical it is to let Christ run my life. I gave it a try and said, Hey, Lord-I don't know if you are there or not, but if you are, will you please forgive me for all the wrong l've done? Will you save me and control my life? I want to be a Christian. Will you be my friend? Thanks. Then I let him. He changes me and it hurts sometimes, but it is worth it. What is com- parable to eternal life? To knowing Christ? The choice is yours! Along with the personal goals of the club members such as Paul Dees, who has written above, the club as a whole has a goal and a purpose to promote Christian fellowship among the student body, to learn more about the Bible, and the saving grace of our Lord, and most important of all to serve God. ln the beginning of the year they had a bake sale and the money was sent to Teen Challenge in New York. Teen Challenge is a rehibilitation center for drug addicts where Jesus is the cure and answer. In February, they started spon- soring an eight year-old child who lives in South America, has hardly any home life, and is hungry. They hope that the future Bible studies will continue to sponsor this child through compassion. KBQY, Sue Keefe. 30 Youth For Christ if Q3 . J X , ,gg , C, rw M tw? Q ,f . The cheerleaders are chosen through competitive tryouts where they are judged on their gymnastic and cheering abilities. The girls practice all summer, which includes attending a four-day camp at I.S.U. Their primary responsibilities are to cheer at the football and basketball games and to promote team enthusiasm and school spirit in the student body. This year they once again helped SHS win the Good Sportsmanship trophy at the City Basket- ball Tournament. 32 Cheerleaders Cheerleaders Bottom Row: Mary Dye, Pam Richards, Eleanor Tungett. The 1976-77 school year began on a very uncertain note. The first teacher strike in District 186 history divided the faculty, students and community. After four days of picket lines, declining student atten- dance, charges and counter charges, a court order brought the teachers into the classrooms. The issues that brought about the strike remained unsettled as this book went to press. SFA: . V1--.......,.. A xifmsau 'Y bQa..J5 6.41 if -1 is KN' ,auf What's the funniest thing you've seen today? This being Springfield High School's first year of soccer competition on the high school level, we had a very good season. The team had a record of 6-1 -0. For the soccer sectional, our team was ranked eighth out of seventeen teams. In our first game of the sectional against East St. Louis Assump- tion, we maintained control of the ball for sev- enty-five percent of the game. We had plenty of opportunities to score, but were unsuccessful. Assumption scored two uncanny goals to win the game. Next year with more and better teams sched- uled, our experience should carry us well into the sectional. Soccer 149 Volleyball 150 Volleyball . 1 ,wr- -qkw. That was the time left when the Champaign place kicker put 3 points on the scoreboard and a 17-14 defeat for the Senators. The Champaign victory knocked the Senators out of first place in the Big 12, a play-off berth in The Illinois State Finals, and for all practical purposes budded the Sena- tor's season. The '76 Varsity Squad represented the best qualities of Senator Football. The Senators ran off a string of 6 wins before encountering the Maroons. This was largely and inexperienced squad, however they set their goals and achieved most, missing only one desire to win the Conference and advance to the State Play-offs. The Combining staff and underclass squad members are proud of the association we built with our graduating se- niors. lt is now our hope to achieve those goals next season which we failed to achieve in '76 F00ibaIl 1 57 Cindi Najim Sherry Galloway Sue Carruthers Lyn Faller Alice VanMeter Sally Toberman Lori Wiseman Tracey Stern Liz Corsale Sally Wiseman Deaette Murray Girls Tennis i 158 Tennis Tennis 159 Basketball 'H-'Y ill' our A33 'M ru i 1-3 i 1-.1 ---.
