Bands boosted school spirit With the increased number of students showing an interest in band, S.H.S. was able to form two bands this year. The Varsity Band consisted of Freshman and Soph- omore students. They played at several basketball games and in the combined band at the All-City Music Festival. Junior and Senior students made up the Concert Band. They per- formed at football and basketball games and also in the All-City Music Festival. The Concert Band, which had over 80 members, gave 3 formal concerts. First chair members made up the Stage Band, which won first place in the Sangamon County Fair. Three new choirs expanded the s. . s. choral department With the Freshman class adding new talent to the vocal music de- partment, the addition of three new choirs was necessary. They are the Freshman Mixed, Freshman Girls' and Freshman-Sophomore Mixed Choirs which are under the direc- tion of Mrs. Chilovich. Mr. Spreck- lemeyer directed the Sophomore Girls' Choir and Advanced Girls' Choir. These choirs combined with the Singing Seven and A Cappella to present the Christmas and Spring Concerts. Freshman Mixed Choir is known as the training choir. In this group, the students' music abilities are furthered by the use of special books designed to improve pitch and note placement.
