Springfield Hi h School hosted the largest eolle e da in State of Illinois Springfield High School spon- sored its annual College Day on Tuesday, October 22, 1968. ln- teract members worked with Miss Hausen to host the event. Sixty-five colleges and univer- sities from eleven states were represented, making our Col- lege Day the largest in the state. Interviewing hours were from 2:30 to 5:30 P. M. and from 7:30 until 9:30 P. M. This gave students and par- ents a chance to learn what the colleges had to offer, admis- sion requirements, costs, and gen- eral information. College Day was well attended by many stu- dents interested in the future. 'fit-we Illinois State Representative gave counsel to students and parents alike. Once again, Miss Hausen offers her sound advice. Q Z 24 College Day, a helpful event in the lives of college - bound seniors.

AFS student, Irene Koehler, with her American family, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Grimes, and daughter Mary Ellen. K K I ,I , I I Mary Ellen and Irene pursue a common musical interest. Irene gives a German touch to Mr. Grimes' hair. Irene Koehler and Mary Ellen Grimes, AFS sisters, E I Irene Koehler joined senior class ranks Our A.F.S. exchange student this year was Irene Koehler whose American hostess was Mary Ellen Grimes. Arriving from Friedrich- shafen, West Germany, on August 14, Irene had a chance to adjust to American life before the onset of school. Irene found basic differences between the German and American school systems. The German sys- tem is based on nine years of study followed by a comprehensive ex- amination. During these years, the student takes 15 subjects per week. After the examination, he concentrates on one particular subject. Irene enjoyed school sports events, a new experience, also, since her school offered no extra- curricular activities. 25
